That's tough to say. The one closes to my heart, is the Marathon Trilogy- but that's no mystery if you've been around me in System Wars at all...

Strangly, Halo 1 on my Mac, and Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force (the first game) on my Mac gave me two of the best single player experiences.

Bah, another one of these.

I guess i'd go with either Half Life or Unreal Tournament, i don't know. Too many good ones (at least when concerning the PC).

I played Goldeneye only a year or three ago. So at the time I was playing it it was nothing special and I hated the controls.

Best one ever? I don't know, so far FarCry I think. But it will change later.

So are you going to do one for every genre? Why not just combine it into one giant thread? Anyways...

  • Doom I/II
  • Duke Nukem 3D
  • Quake I/II/III
  • Goldeneye 007
  • Unreal Series
  • Starseige: Tribes
  • Half Life 1/2
  • Perfect Dark

Honourable mentions:

  • Thief: The Dark Project and The Metal Age
  • System Shock 2
  • Deus Ex
  • Call of Duty
  • Day of Defeat
  • Counter Strike
  • Star Wars Dark Forces, Dark Forces II, Mysteries of the Sith, Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy
  • Star Wars Battlefront and Republic Commando
  • The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay

I have to say GoldenEye 64gp19

honestly, this question can only be answered accurately if you go by each generation....for example, whiel Wolfenstein isn't that much fun today, at the time it was great (IMO, kind of like Golden Eye).  FPS's that stand out in my mind as the greatest(for their time) would include Doom, Golden Eye, Half-Life 1 & 2, Halo 1 & 2 (I know people will gripe about Halo being listed, but i was one of the first to limit the amount of guns that you could carry), and the first two or three games of the Medal of Honor series (the stage of storming the Normandy Beach is defintely one of my all time favorite gaming moments).

I think css is the best fps ever, it never gets old to me. As far as consoles go i am going to have to go with Halo 2. Both are great games and have great lasting value but css is definitely the better of the 2.

Halo: Comba...

Just kidding, I was quite disappointed with it.  However, Half-Life and Doom were thoroughly enjoyable.

I'd give it to Doom, simply because it has a lot of soul, mastered sound design, and loads of monsters to fight. It wasn't until Resident Evil 4 (about 11 years later!!) that a game could make me feel badass one level and nearly wet myself the next. One can't forget all that it did for the genre and in some cases, gaming in general, such as interactivity with the environment, non-orthogonal corners, lighting effects, deathmatch and co-op over ethernet, multiple heights. Its use of sprites allowed it to pack dozens and dozens of enemies onscreen (one .wad file had 702 Cyberdemons in the same room, and even when they were all walking and attacking, with the sound effects echoing, and rockets flying, leaving smoke and debris behind, it still didn't have a noticeable framerate drop). By itself, the engine behind Doom's been surpassed, but thanks to updates (source ports, mods, and levels), Doom's moved into the 21st century with features like jumping, freelook, and chasecam. One of my personal favorite source ports is Skulltag, with loads of modes and stages, along with freelook, jumping, and the ability to summon up to 32 bots for multiplayer or co-op. Not to mention that you can use mods like The Simpsons, Pokemon, or Ghostbusters and many more. You all know Doom was the first game with a huge mod community, right?

Doom's my favorite, because as this post proves, I can't ever stop talking about it. There's always a memorable moment.

Try to objectively tell me that Goldeneye is NOT the best FPS ever made.
