The touchpad seems to be adding new gameplay elements and the gameplay looks awesome.

Has to be my most anticipated game on any console.

I find it funny how people still do not see a relevance to a touchpad on the controller despite the fact this is 2013 and touchpad came out since the 90s lol

Same, all this motion shit just seems pointless and counter intuitive. That goes for all consoles.

The wii was actually onto something in Metroid prime 3, that actually controlled very well for an early Wii game and the aiming was fairly accurate it really did enhance the atmospere. Same thing which KZ2 had from what I understand the ps Wand worked well.

i think it really depends on the game. Shoe horning that crap into every title just seems nuts however and that's the direction it seems alot of the industry is heading.

I don't see the relevance in this case when you could just press a button and achieve the same thing. It doesn't add anything to the game whatsoever.

You seem to forget the touchpad is actually a button, multiple button at that. Obviously you can argue the ''gimmick'' nature all you want but when you compare how many commands can be mapped on a controller as opposed to a Keyboard/Mouse, you would see why a touchpad sounds like reasonable alternative to adding a few more extra buttons. Perhaps not everyone likes the charcoal rub in the Uncharted Golden Abyss but i did, as it simulated a feel of finding clues for treasure, something that is largely missing from the main series, then there is the case of Dragons Crown where console players have complained how difficult it is to cast magic spells from rune stones as opposed to how simple it is on the Vita.

From the top of my head, i can give many scenarios where the touch input would actually impact positively to game design as opposed to just sticking to the same old crowded buttons and the best part of it is its an option, no one is forcing developers to use it, again its 2013...laptops had touch inputs since the 90s, go figure

DR3 looks like shit because it's an enhanced 360 game. Forza had to sacrifice alot of crap to keep 1080p at 60fps apparently so they dumped realtime weather and lighting and loaded the world with textures from Google maps.

Ryse looks like shit because lol Crytek.

I think the best part of the touchpad on the DS4 is that it'll free up more conventional input's like R3, L3, Face Buttons etc. Having more inputs isn't always a bad thing. I feel like controllers may even add an extra face button or two at some point simply because interactions are becoming far more complex every generation.

lol, the ps4 controller.

it looks better than the last ds but i laugh every time i look at all the bells and whistles on it.

sixaxis! a touchpad! a speaker! a clicky touchpad thingy! a share button! a softserve ice cream dispencer!

it looks like they just spit on a ds3 and rolled it in a pile of accessories and kept what stuck to it.

At the very least, they've revealed you can just use either side of the touchscreen as 2 clickable buttons. That right there is good enough for me since smart developers could use that well.

At least you can unplug the Kinect lol, that touchpad will be staring you in the face constantly. [spoiler] I actually think devs will eventually find naturally intuitive ways to use it but I'm loling at the "gimmick" tag it's receiving after cows laid into the WiiU and the Kinect so hard [/spoiler]

the touch screen has the potential to aleviate some of the problems that exist when trying to make a pc game work on a console and there being a lack of buttons. using radial menus has helped, but is slow to use in combat, using the d pad for 4 extra buttons has helped, but the touch pad gives even more options to developers trying to make MMO's etc work. At many points in the gen it will cause the PS4 version of 3rd party games to control better.

minding the gimmick

the problem with the infamous games was the height

nearly every combo, super move, power, glide, jump etc.. was limited to like a 5 story building

if you're are going to use an original concept do it right

I use to be wary of touchpads and screens but they can come in handy. As someone else mentioned already, in Dragon's Crown the runes are a lot easier to cast in the Vita version due to the touchscreen. I can actually fight and easily cast the rune at the same time. I can dodge in Gravity Rush without actually needing a button or analog stick dedicated to it. I agree the use in SS so far are dissapointing but I'm really glad the touchpad is there on the controller.
