How many times do we really have to play a sequel (e.g. gran turismo or a grand theft auto) before a lesser but more original game has greater appeal?

I would argue that as more and more of these graphical make overs take place, generic gameplay styles should be penalised more heavily dispite a better game overall. Does it matter to you how good GT12 is, when you know 99% what its going to be like before you play it??

I've got to say, I am very disappointed by my PS3 as a console and I don't like little big planet one bit. However I do admire an attempt by a smaller developer to make a different type of game. Innovation and simplicity has helped the Wii win this generation in sales at any rate.

In your opinion, which of the other platforms, gaming PC, 360 or PS3 has and/or will contribute the most in terms of innovation. Is there greater innovation to come in this generation of spin offs and sequels and rehashes that bores the wits out of the seasoned (think over 25) gamer? Will the older generation finally give up gaming for more original and refreshing occupations... I'm mulling it over.

"Innovation" is probably the most overused, useless word in gaming.

I think what we need, and the games that get credit are games that are FRESH (Going against the grain, which some would call innovative). They maybe ressurect Tired concepts but do them with extreme polish.

One arguement the fanboy's throw around, is NOTHING is innovative. Well, if that's the case, then we should abolish the word.

Honestly, there's plenty of Innovative games around, but to me, Innovation is more than NEW CONCEPT.

I don't care for innovation unless a genre is becoming extremely stale. This is why I love how the RTS genre is evolving. Even though there are those sticking to the good old forumla a mix of new and old is great!

Innovation died in the 90's. We get nothing but rehashes and sequels these days. The current state of gaming is pretty pathetic.

Of course there are still few innovative games, but they don't get any attention and sell like crap.

Do you know how hard it is to be innovative, these days? almost everything has been done. You also have to keep in mind PROFIT, sequals are great, expecially if they are from your favourite titles, people want more of it...it doesn't need to be innovative.

Actually GTA 4 wasn't much of a rehash....in fact all the hate is how much of a big change it is from the other GTA games.

Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts is a big change of pace from previous banjos

Those of us(me) that hated FF 12 mostly hated the combat which was a change of pace for FF(and a pile of crap)

there is nothing wrong with a franchise as long as they mix it up.

to be honest, GTAIV feels alot like a "next-gen" GTA3 to me..

They advertised the game to be a true GTA3 sequel, but still idk..I was kinda dissapointed (not hating!) with the stuff you could do. it felt rather empty compared to SA.

I don't really need the developers to reinvent the wheel everytime, but I would like to see more unique games even if they're not 100% innovative.

It doesn't need to be anything ground-breaking, something simple like letting me play as the villain instead of the hero is enough to make the game seem fresh.

Too bad most devs think "innovation" means throwing in some useless gimmick to what otherwise is a carbon copy of the most popular game in the genre.

ppl say its not needed. some ppl say it is needed.

well lets look at portal......everyone loved that game....it was original and innovatove and i hope they release a full game based on portals!

the psn games: flower, patapon, locorocco etc again they have a sound following because they do it differentely and not to mention echochrome i love that game! so mind boggiling at times.

but then you have the sequels of some of the best games from last few gens which still come out on top even though its a tried and tested method.

either way everyone wins.

Innovation is good an all... but I just want developers to focus alot more on other genres instead of constant shooter games . It's getting beyond ridiculous.

I think it depends on what exactly is innovated. You can innovate genres with games like GTA, Halo, Gran Turismo, etc., and you can innovate the medium like the Wii did. In either case, most innovation can probably be found on the PC, it's just a matter of how much mainstream appeal said innovation has.

Halo was not innovative, was Gran Turismo?

GTA was pretty innovative though. :P
