Powerful Hardware does not sell consoles to the masses. All three console manufacturers will most likely release a balance between price and power thus closing the gap between the power of each console.

Are we going to see actual Gameplay and/or exclusive controller based innovation?

Or will third parties go the easy route and develop games for all three new platforms without any drastic change. Thus creating libraries that are 95% simiar?

Example: The PS3 has SixAxis. A cool little controller feature that was rarely used because the Xbox 360 didn't have such thing.

The only reason the Wii was very different was because it was much weaker than the other systems. Much harder to have the same games on Wii and HD Twins.

Ninty is forced to bring more in hardware, While the HD twins are (and can at this point)going to play it safe....The economy is touch and go right now.

well WII U is our only hope for core gaming innovation next gen.Kinect and the Wii-mote had their chance but the touchscreen tablet could function as a window into a virtual reality.

I hope consoles don't try to be the poor PCs next gen like they did in this gen.

We've seen plenty of innovation this gen. Just not as radical because gamings foundations have already been layed

I expect various "new" features in the online space. The Wii-U will have a touch pad, and the 360 will have an improved kinect which may lead to new possibilities. The PS4, will probably be a more powerful PS3.

it would have probably worked if it wasnt for piss poor implementation and complete oversight of the fact some people might not like the idea.

No innovation from Wii-U besides a funky controller.

I think Nextbox and PS4 will up the level of gaming accessibility and home entertainment...
Nextbox will have blu-ray which is obvious and a new kinnect with it.

Anything can be a guess but its up to the developers to maximise the quality and innovation of games with what they've given.

your ripping on the Wii U for being innovative :S yet praise what MS will most likely do.

Sorry but major case of irony in this post.

Innovation doesn't exist anymore. Merely using old ideas in somewhat fresh ways.

It could've been used more though, like in GTA IV to reload with it, that could've spared 1 button that could've been used for something else. Though even with it on you can still reload with the circle button, so yeah it was pointless but could've been used for something like that. :P

I see a few differnt things that may happen:

1) The increase in HW power, requires more manpower = more expensive games, so less risks taken (just like we saw this gen).

2) Despite the above, some lesser Publishers begin taking more chances because they are in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. Which will give two different tiers of games, one being the bigger blockbusters (known from this gen, but with a likely +10 buck price hike).

Aswell as cheaper but less polished games, which gives more innovation from these lesser Publishers, which may hit it big, seeing as how Indie games finally caught on a bit.

3)The industry focuses too much on "easy to pick up" games, further removing gameplay elements like weve seen this gen (thier socalled "streamlining, aka dumbing down" Creating afair increase at the beginning ofthe gen, but due to games losing appeal way too fast, because tier loss of idendity and challange, we might see gaming abandoned by a large segment of gamers by the mid of the next console cycle (around 4-5 years in). Resulting in a market crash aswell as negative innovation.

My guess? We will see option 2. Ofcourse there are otherwaysit can play out, but those 3 are what I consider the 3 most likely.

We haven't really seen much innovation from our new motion controls this gen with the exception of SS from what I hear, the problem is it should be the core gameplay itself that is being reinvented not just/even the way we control it. Also the sixaxis not being used to much is probably a good thing, its an awful addition that really ****es me off! (how is turning the controller to open a valve any more enjoyable than just pressing a button to do it? providing you haven't had part of your brain removed at some point that is).

Not to mention that development costs can (and have) lead to some developers going out of business this gen, and they're only going to get worse from here. The only major innovation we should expect will be from Indie devs and such.

The WiiU with is controller is already innovating and shaking-up the modern playstyle that is too often considered the 'norm that shouldn't be questioned'. So I disagree.

In general, when it comes to games, as development costs rise to take advantage of hardware, the willingness to take a risk on innovative ideas decreases. So there will be very little innovation. Innovation will come more from smaller, downloadable titles I believe.

Nintendo may get some credit for "innovation" with motion controls or the new touchpad controller. But by and large I don't know how much these things will really change gaming for the long-term or how games will really change due to these new control ideas.

the suxasses is your example? really?

the feature that was included because sony didn't want to pay immersion royality fees so they removed rumble and claimed it was last gen and was going to be replaced with suxassses controls then lair came out and proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that suxasses motion controls were useless?

really? that's the example of innovation? really?!?

the suxasses? that was used in like 5 games i played the entire gen and then it was always turing valves or some silly shyt like that? that's the example?

that's what we are going with here as the example of controller innovation? reeeeeeallllly?????

I don't see much trully innovative games next-gen because they don't sell. Game innovation will be reduced to indie devs.

The whole playing on the tablet screen just seems like a little bonus for peeps who can't play on the TV or someone else wants to watch TV, whatever. I definitely also would prefer playing on the HD TV and just use the tablet for whatever purpose the developers use it for: menus, maps, whatever they decide. I don't know about the whole window to virtual reality thing.

I don't care about the impulse buying masses, I care about me. Improve, don't try to re-invent the wheel when nobody asks for it because you're only trolling yourselves (hardware makers).
