I agree that there is room for some fun in the combo area in the game. I think people put the games down in that area a little too much. But it still pales in comparison to a lot of action games out there in this area:

The problem mostly lies on the mix of secondary weapons; there isn't as much variety to the possibilities for the execution of combos as there are on other games. Not to mention the use of quick time events which can only bring this particular area down. It's still, though, a strong area of the series, which is to achieve the biggest cinematic feel possible, even if other areas take a downside because of it.

:?Although NG2 flopped, I'm sure it's still good and I'm sure he'll enjoy it. Evidently, God of War is a second class button smasher.

That's the spirit, don't let that AA score get you down.
Anyone know what GOW2 scored on GS? I'm too lazy to check. One of the best PS2 games ever, I think.

I often see him praising NG and he just accused GOW of being a button masher. This being "System Wars", I just thought I'd bring up NG2's floppage in an innocent manner. :D

:?It's funny how GoW fans always lash out when someone calls them button mashers. Even the guy who led the design on God of War's combat system has admitted the intention was mostly to seperate it from hardcore series like DMC/NG and speak to a larger crowd. He compared all three games' combat systems in detail in an article.
God of War, unlike the other two games, allows for many Pre-hit frame cancels, and incorporates several of the methods found in the other two games. The main difference is that it is not trying to be a hardcore game from either a technical or flashy point of view. It's just smash-and-kill fun.Eric Williams
The rules for canceling are all over the place - but for good reason. Our intended audience does not want to learn the techniques. They just want the game to play the way they think it should, because combat is not the only focus unlike the other two games.Eric Williams
I own both God of War 1 and 2. They're very fun games, but they're simply not nearly as demanding as DMC or especially NG. GoW games are basically mindless fun, with accessible and streamlined action. Something to just sit back and play without really giving it too much thought. But DMC and NG keep you on your toes at all time. They're simply designed with different purposes.
