Insomniac made a great decision dropping 60 Frames Per Second for better visuals

a few months ago Insomniac announced they are dropping 60 Frames per second and instead will focus more on better visuals and i couldnt be happier. I honestly wish more Devs would do this. All the best looking games this gen are all 30 FPS.. Killzone 2, Gears 2, Motorstorm and Uncharted 2 to just name a few. while Ratchet and Clank and Resistance are ok looking games, they could look much much better if not held back by 60 FPS.. Unfortunatley the current gen consoles arent capable of mind blowing visuals WITH 60 frames per second. MW2 is proof, the game moves silky smooth but the visuals are very bland and lifeless.

Bad Company 2 is another prime example.. 30 FPS but looks amazing, i much much rather have better visuals. I never really got all the excitement over games that run 60 FPS, very overrated IMO.

Thats why i think Epic and Naughty Dog are the best devs this gen, they know gamers like much better visuals than higher Frames per second and you can tell they are delivering in their games.. Uncharted 2 and Gears 2 are 2 of the best looking games this gen.

60 FPS is always better for fast paced game especially a game like Resistance but idk ........ better graphics is always a plus.

In a shooter, I'd rather have FPS then overall visuals to keep the action faster.

I like my games to be very responsive, especially my FPS games for example. I think they should rethink this strategy

Not really.. I mean Killzone 2 and Halo 3 both are 30 FPS and both play fantastic and Killzone 2 looks phenemonal because Guerilla didnt focus so much time on framers per second.. Until we have consoles that cun run a game like crysis that has mindblowing visuals AND high FPS then i think devs should just focus on better visuals until Crysis on consoles can be achieved

well im a graphics W*ore, i say better visuals all the way.. Gears and Uncharted 2 fun, look amazing and no frame rate drops at all.. Now dont get me wrong, if a game has framerate dips then thats a no no, but if a game can look amazing and maintain 30 FPS throughout the whole game then i much rather have that.

Resistance 2 didn't look great. I'd take a drop in framerate for some better visuals in Resistance 3 for sure.

People notice graphics before frame rate, that's true.

KZ2 is visually amazing but you can tell it slows down during campaign. Digital Foundry had an analysis on KZ2 and it usually runs at around mid 20's fps. It can get a bit annoying especially when you just unload rounds into people back to back in a just a few seconds. I agree that devs should aim for 30 fps so they can push the graphics but if it ruins your gameplay you shouldn't go for that 30 fps ........ go with a GOW3 approach, aim for 60 so it never ever hit below 30 or just sacrifice some graphics for a stable 60 fps. The difference between 60 and 30 is very small BUT it is more noticeable when you play a game as fast as Resistance.

Depends on the game, really. Ratchet's smooth animations are half of what made it look good, imo.

As much as i like graphics, i'd go with FPS in this case. Just more room when huge FPS drops happen.

Resistance isn't exactly a hugely competitive game, so this decision is good.

Should be an option, seems logical to me. Great graphics + 30fps = default option. Lower res/medium graphics + 60fps = 2nd option.

Resistance has always been 30FPS, while Ratchet is 60FPS (although it does drop occasionally).

Resistance 2 looked decent if you consider the size of the maps and the amount of players in it.

Playing COD then playing BFBC you will notice the framerate drop, I also think BC is lower than 30, maybe in the mid 20's. I don't mind though, you get used to it.

CoD is hardly ever 60 frames on consoles.

:| It is consistent 60fps for the online multiplayer. In the single player it can dip to 50's and 40's at times.

Uncharted2 and gears might be two of the best CONSOLE games for graphics, but Crysis and Crysis Warhead are much better looking.

With that being said, Uncharted2 sometimes seems like its much more then 30FPS, they did an amazing job. Sometimes I cant notice 30FPS and other times I can definatly notice it (TF2 on ps3/360 compared to PC version... my oh my.... such a difference in FPS)

Some games do 30 FPS better than others. For example Uncharted 2 I cant really tell the game is running at only 30FPS. While games like gears and Halo 3 you can easily tell the frame rate is locked.

Uncharted 2 does have object motion blur, which definitely helps make things look smoother.

Well Resistance 1 and 2 both run at 30 don't they?

The Ratchet games already looked fantastic, no need for a big visual improvement. they need to improve other aspects of that series if they plan on making new entries.

Why are you consolites content with settling?

Why not have both top notch graphics AND 60fps?

Consoles are limited.

I guess I "settle" for 30 FPS because I cant tell a difference. I dont have a frame counter when I play games. If I like what I see on screen, and like the controls I'm inputting on a controller, why should I care how many frames per second it runs at?

Resistance's graphics were so terrible I could barely tell it ran at 60. Where as Cod and even rachet you can clearly tell how well it runs. So as long as the next one doesn't look like a screen full of vomit then thats a plus

well on pc you can have both :D of course by tweaking your settings you can sacrifice fps for visual fidelity and vice versa most of the time i'm gonna go for better fps crysis being the exception. and i feel like the difference between 30vs60fps is much bigger on pc then it is console especially for fps its feels smoother and is much easier to aim if your playing at 60fps+. idk about console gamers but i can easily tell the diffrence between 30 and 60fps.

he's probably talking about split screen where the framerate can go under 15. It used to happen in the first when you dropped an airstrike. Here's what to do if you don't believe me though, get four controllers, do 4 player split screen, let 1 guy have a riot shield and another guy just shooting it up.. framerate will go into the gutter.

Resistance 1 and 2 run at 30 FPS. So i don't see how this would be a massive change. Since they never had the games at 60 frames anyway.
