Insomniac's Ted Price Sees Benefits of Multiplatform Development
Decade-long Sony relationship comes with its own advantages as well.
By Steve Watts, 11/14/2008

Insomniac CEO Ted Price has commented on some of the advantages and disadvantages of its long, exclusive relationship with Sony, in an interview with Gamasutra. While talking about multiplatform development, Price said, "We see the other side too. We see great games that are multiplatform and succeeding wildly, and doing great, and that too is a fantastic place to be."
Of course, Insomniac has historically been a Sony mainstay. "For the last ten years or so, we have been working very closely with Sony," Price said. "I mean, people ask me all the time, 'so, do you consider going multiplatform? What are the drawbacks?'" He says that one benefit of exclusivity is that the company's games "tend to be associated with the hardware -- but that could be a drawback too." He cites the original Resistance: Fall of Man as an example of this kind of product association. "We did get a lot of additional exposure simply because it was synonymous with the PlayStation 3," he said. "It's hard to break into the genre; and it's cool that we were able to do it with a brand new entry."

He's careful to point out that Insomniac has its own voice and isn't governed by Sony. "We definitely have been very vocal about maintaining our independence," he said. He mentions that many at Insomniac would be frustrated by a heavy-handed publisher, but Sony isn't one. "Our relationship with Sony is one where we develop autonomously. Sony certainly gives us great feedback on the games, but we're in control of the development process, and that is a great place to be."

Though Price's comments would seem to indicate the developer isn't opposed to going multiplatform, there's no reason to think that they have immediate plans to do so. Resistance 2 has cemented the franchise's place as the PlayStation 3's answer to Gears of War 2 in this embattled holiday season, and the company has already dropped a not-too-subtle hint that they're at work on the follow-up to Ratchet & Clank Future for 2009. There may come a day that we see the Insomniac label making the jump to other platforms, but for now the benefits of sticking with Sony seem to outweigh the risks for Price and his team.

Your thread title is incredibly misleading considering the content of your post.  There really isn't any hint of Insomniac going multiplatform.

He'd be ignorant to downplay the advantages of the multiplatform strategy.  Any so called "exclusive" developer would likely throw out a similar answer.

As far as Resistance goes, like Price said in the interview, being exclusive to the PS3 probably helped the title stand out a bit in the overcrowded FPS genre.  If it were multiplat, it probably gets overshadowed by Gears and other bigger titles.  Insomniac is a talented group with more than one title to fall back on though.

Very misguided title. Ted Price already stated that they aren't planning on going multiplat, however he does see the advantages and disadvantages.

Misleading thread title, TC. All they're saying is that they wouldn't mind making games on the 360 and have seen the benefits of multiplat games. It could happen, yes, but they didn't say they want to now.

Um I have to disagree, if it was on the 360 and the PS3, it would sell very well on the 360, probably would double sales of what it actually is today.

Nowhere did they say they were going multi. Besides Sony owns Ratchet and Resistance, I could care less if a new ip was multi. Using this logic that Insomniac is going multi because of this little hint, Bungie is going multi as well even though that has a little hint of happening as well

When the ship is sinking you would want to jump in too.

Insomniac needs to do what they need to do to survive this gaming business nowadays.

Even if he does go multipatform PS3 franchises will stay exclusive. & your mad misleading bias cost me 50 hp points :) We still have R & C 2009 coming in. + That would be good for his company(as it deserves more praise, one of the best gaming devs imo) if they developed on 360 as well. The best team ever. Under rated hopefully they can get noticed

Yes people, Sony owns the Ratchet and Resistance franchises. Even IF they went multi only new ips would be multi and they're already working on another Ratchet game and Resistance Retribution and they just released Resistance 2. I doubt they'll make any new announcements anytime soon. Even so it most likely would still be a PS3 exclusive.

I've heard that Insomniac will announce 2 new PS3 games at GDC next year along with a new IP for the Xbox 360. So it looks like they're going multiplat but the PS3 will still be their main focus so Sony won't actually lose anything. But these are just rumours, they could easily turn out to be untrue.

For a PS3 exclusive, Resistance sold very well.  Obviously not as well as Gears but the point I'm making here is that Gears did not overshadow it, it out sold it (big difference).  The fate of R2 remains to be seen, though I doubt it approaches Gears2 numbers.  Were Resistance multiplatform, Gears, Halo 3 and other titles would likely overshadow Resistance to an extent that it wouldn't even reach the sales it on the PS3 alone.

Typical SW topic, full of spin and bias.

Still, it was a good read, the thread's titles is funny when you read the article though.

Well, that's interesting.

I've heard that Bungie may be doing the same thing, but with the PS3 in mind. It's just a rumor, so we'll see.

Insomniac for 360, Bungie for PS3, what the?!

I think those resistance sales are begining to make them nervous about their future. Anyone who thinks that resistance would not have sold a hell of alot more on the ps3 is just kidding themselvs, being exclusive to the losing platform has got to bite into the profits somewhat

From whay im hearing Resistance 1 sold well and IM pretty sure 2 will sell just as much. Just cause ther no midnight madness for resistance doesint mean its selling poorly. Gears is just more mainstreamed.

Cows dont relize this but RESITANCE 1 WAS BUNDLED!!!

And yet Gears 1 outsold it by a huge margin as will gears 2
