Do you think future integrated graphics such as Intel HD 4000 will cut into the sales of consoles? Intel HD 4000 can play modern games. A lot of people buy expensive computers with integrated graphics. I think being able to play modern games with integrated graphics will turn many people into pc gamers.

Like for example,Intel HD 4000 can play Skyrim at 46 frames on medium settings. I think thats more performance than on Xbox 360. http://www.anandtech.com/show/5626/ivy-bridge-preview-core-i7-3770k/15

So when one of my friends buys a computer with an integrated graphics in it like Intel HD 4000, I can ask him to play modern games with me. I think thats awesome.

I dont know how that could not be a big threat to the console industry.

New more powerful consoles come out, and the cycle repeats. Not a fan of integrated graphics at all, tho. Consoles are more than graphics btw, there is a divide when it comes to playing local MP, and certain genre's/games appearing on consoles.

Integrated graphics seem like they have made a much faster advance in power than they normally would. Consoles seem like they arent going to be a true gen more powerful this time.

I dont think this next gen will be the same for integrated graphics.

I don't see that happening. The entire game experience in different from consoles to PCs imo, and until that changes, consoles will be fine.

It would be great if things got to the point where any random PC was capable of console-level gaming, with dedicated cards only being necessary for those that want to turn up all the shinies. This will of course depend on the relative power of the next generation of consoles; if it's the same usual performance leap IGPs will be left behind, but if Microsoft and Sony opt to follow Nintendo's lead by sacrificing performance for gimmicks PC IGPs will catch up very quickly.

Oh, it's already happening.

With intle and AMD's integrated (APU's) and upcoming Nvidia based solutions, off the rack PC's will be able to play modern games.

They won't be able to play games like a hgh end PC, or maybe even like a next gen console, but if the Wii and the rest of the current gen consoles have taught us anything is that average joe gamer out there doesn't give a damn about high end graphics.

That means more people playing indie games, and hard core games that scale well on PC. This is specially going to be true where consoles haven't penetrated as much as in the Us and the UK, as there will be resistance from people who consider buying a console an EXTRA expense, since their PC (everyone has/needs a PC after all) cna already play all those games.

But I do think it will also have an effect in the states and UK, maybe even Japan, though I'm guessing that fi consoles evr dissappear, Japan will be the last hold out. College kids will have a TON of multi-player free to play titles to choose from on PC. They will have a ton of social games too, and they will have access to more high end titles, even on their laptops with integrated AMD/Intell/Nvidia APU's, without having to worry about also fitting in a TV and a console into their dorm room.

It took about 5 years for IGPs to equal the original Xbox as well. So it's not all surprising to see current IGPs, 5 years after the introduction of the 360 to finally catch up to it. What I also somewhat expect is for the vector unit SIMDs in CPUs to get wider and more ubiquitous. We could see the general parts of the CPU being used in computer graphics again, though it would probably be more performance and transistor efficient to keep those kinds of processes to dedicated silicon, especially since graphics and orchestration tasks would be biting for time.

I think console exclusives, more precisely, ps3 and future Sony console exclusives, will keep consoles sitting pretty in the gaming world.

No, not even close, and certainly not for consoles. In comparison to previous gens, we do see it less though in typical games but...

There's way too many sports games that sell, millions upon millions of gamers don't play games online. I read that half or more of all consoles sold don't go online, that's a huge.

Sports games are a huge chunk of the gaming market, even if we don't talk about them here.

Not to mention Fighting games, platformers, lightgun, HOW HUGE KINECT is turning out, Move, Wii....no.

Not everyone lives in a studio apartment with their PC and maybe a game console/handheld, these consoles are sold to families as well, designed to hook right up to the TV.

That's just one of the main differences between console and PC gaming, there's plenty of others. Although I enjoy my PC, playing Star Wars TOR right now, that doesn't mean I don't realize how many millions upon millions of copies of Kinect, Madden, NHL, Just Dance 3, Singstar, MLB:The Show, NBA 2K, Tiger Woods, WarioWare, LBP1/2, New Super Mario Bros, Soccer, Punchout, Kirby, Donkey Kong, Halo, GeoW, Resistance, Killzone 3, WiiWare, WiiSports/Resort, PS Move games, ROCKBAND 1-3, Guitar Heros, PSN, XBLA and tons of other games are sold to gamers that take advantage of local MP offline.

I spoke on this weeks ago, but yes, there are instances now with some mainstream games lack local, but there are plenty of local games still being pumped out for consoles.

Famlies and households are NOT going away, and developers/publishers know this.

Integrated graphics are perfect for casual gamers who want to play a mainstream game once in a while at reduced settings.

They certainly have come a long way from what they once were. I'm glad Intel and AMD are putting in that effort.

I don't know about AMD and Nvidia but Intel's integrated graphics chips are a joke and barely run modern games decently. I think it will still take some time before integraded graphics become fully capable of running modern games well.

Intel's are a joke now, but it looks like the next iteraiton will be better.

But yes, AMD and Nvidia's upcoming APU's will blow it away. Naturally, as they are GPU companies. My AMD APUP (A8) was $125, and runs games BETTER than any console.

Haswell is said to up to 3 times the gpu performance of ivy bridge. I think that blows xbox 360 out of the water.

I dont think consoles will be as relevant to gaming as they used to be.

Intel's HD 4000 pretty much is on par with a Geforce 8600 GT or even Geforce 410 which is pretty close to the 360.

Integrated graphics are awful. The fact the same people on the PC hardware forum will tell people to avoid integrated graphics like the plague, will then come here and talk positively about it is sad.

Xbox 360 has IGP model. Consoles are not restricted to normal DDR memory types.

AMD Kaveri APU has 512 GCN stream processors @ ~900Mhz i.e. rivals Radeon HD 7750 (512 GCN stream processors @ 800Mhz) link
