Those specs can only be dreamed up right now...

WTF, tehy gonna make another one this soon. At least Sony consoles last 5 or more years. black_awpN1
2005-2011
That's like 6 years, bud. The PS3 will be outdated by then.
I wonder if they'll make one that isn't extremely defective this time. Out_Kast3000
They did last time. Xbox was a beast in terms of hardware reliability. The PS2 was the one with issues last gen. That dreaded disc read error!

It's like MS traded Sony for all of the successes and failures of the PS2, and vica versa.Dear lord, I can only imagine how big of a power brick this thing would need.

WHAT? Did you even read what was said? First off the 360 has ALREADY been out two years. The article states they MIGHt have the next one out by 2011 or even 2012 the EARLIEST! Meaning that's 6 or 7 years! LOOONG enough in my book considering graphic cards and processors grow almost every 6 months.
And if developers think the PS3 is hard to develop for, just wait until the next Xbox. :?dream431ca
You do realize that developing for multi-core CPUs is nothing like developing for Cell CPUs, don't you? PC devs have been working on games for multi-core CPUs for a few years now and all that knowledge can be used for a multicore system like the next Xbox seems it will be. Heck, the 360 has 3 cores for that matter and devs find it very user friendly. I won't be the least bit surprised for the next PS to abandon the cell in favor of multi-cores as well.
Sounds nice, but how much will it cost? Personally that's a big problem with some of these things, the cost of them. Even the cost of a 360 Elite is a bit much for me at the moment; I may be able to find a way to get one, but its still expensive.
I also had a slight problem with the idea of not using game discs any more. Maybe things will be better by then, but there could always be a problem with the downloading of a game and it could take awhile to download. Also, if the console happens to brick, I'd hope there would be a way of insuring nothing happens with the game licenses and they can be easily retrieved. If those things are taken care of, then there might not be a problem and most of the annoyance would be just my personal thing of liking to have a tangible disc.
But if they can make a powerful console and keep the costs down, that'd be great.

You may as well get used to online being the new gaming media as it's clear that's where the industry is headed. Look at the bright side, the lack of a disc drive will lower the cost of future systems and the lack of discs will lower development costs.
dont worry about it, xbl records all the stuff u have downloaded from it, u can delete it anytime u want, and download it again when u feel like it =)Sounds nice, but how much will it cost? Tech.co.uk takes educated guesses and looks at the specs of Xbox 2011
So...its guesses by people not from Microsoft? Yeah, I think I will skip reading that.

As long as the bugs get worked out of it and the downloads aren't a pain, I could probably get used to it. Though I'll still lament not having a disc lol.
Though, the lack of a disc drive probably wouldn't change the console price too much, depending on the drive obviously. Maybe a decrease of $50. Then again, they may still have the drive anyway for backwards capability.
It may help on the game development side of things more. Hopefully it'll help.

That's good. I've never actually used XBL, so I don't know how they do things. I'll most likely end up using it once I finally get a 360.
I'd hate to have something happen and then everything I've bought be gone.

Well, to be honest, I only said it would lower costs, I never said it would lower prices. I expect devs and manufacturers to keep those savings for themselves so they can get out of the red and back into the black quicker. Still, it's good for the industry, but yeah, I didn't think about BC. I guess everyone would just copy Nintendo with their VC.

It's all speculation but it does say HD DVD or B.R. for B.C. and Movies in the article.a four TB harddrive lol, desktops don't even need that much space. I'd doubt to see a console over a 500 GB harddrive. Not everyone uses online services and companies would lose money not releasing things in a physical format such as DVD or HD-DVD.PapaJohn24
While 4TB is a lot, memory is cheap. It couldn't hurt to put on a larger HD, or even just put on maybe a small HD, but allow for easy exchange of HDs. Then there's always Solid State HDs. While I doubt they'd make it on to next-gen systems, they will be improving over time as well and is something to consider.
what resolution do you think will be the standard by then 1440p? or will 1080p be the new 720 next gen for consoles?mmirza23TV resolutions rarely change. I expect 1080p to be the standard for the next 20+ years with more intense games lowering the resolution to whatever the devs see fit.

Yes, and 1080p wil only be the standard for video games and Movies. TV will still be 720p or 1080i.

I love how people here tend to gloss over that fact. Probably because it makes them look like hypocrites.I highly doubt games will be only downloadable next gen....think about it. There are millions of people that STILL don't have abroadband connection even availible to themand that would elminate all of them from purchasing a system, that wouldn't work for a lot of people to be required to have an ~$80 a month internet fee on top of an Xbox Live fee that could be $100 a yearby then easily, to much for an average consumer.
Also, all the exclusively video game stores and rental places would go out of bussiness if you could only download a game.
I made this up :
The next Xbox will be a little bigger than the Wii . It's storage device will be 1 cubic inch of DNA that will allow it to store a few terabytes of data , it will not have discs * so you have to download the games. The physics processor will be at least the same power as the whole 360 this day and normally the GPU will rival the most expensive GPUs of PCs when it will come out for a while.
THe controller will also have a motion sensor. Minimum resolution is 1080p but it can go above that also.
An accesory that will sell for it is the HD-DVD / DVD player combo that will let you play xbox 360 games and watch hd dvd movies on it.
Personally, I don't really think the specs in the next generation's consoles are going to matter that much--I think by then our technology will long since have reached the limit of what's necessary to generate computer-animated quality visuals as well as realistic physics. Crysis perfectly demonstrates this at its maximum settings--it's only a step away from that point itself.
What will matter more is ease of development and cost of components. Despite inflation, the price of consoles may actually drop next generation in an effort to bring more gamers into the fold and offset the rising cost of games due to the increasingly Hollywood blockbuster-level budgets required to develop them.
Developers will also be looking for the console with the best development environment, so I really don't think we'll be seeing the loads and loads of cores this article suggests unless console manufacturers find a way to simplify and abstract their usage. Microsoft is already on the road to making game development easier and easier with great software like XNA.
You heard it here first.

I believe we say Blu-ray is not needed this gen. Next-gen could be an entirely different story.
Also, about no game didscs, I seriously doubt that will happen. What about the people that don't have internet or run on CAT3 cables still. That just completely negates any hope they would have of playing a game. by 2011 there may not be a lot of those people, but they are still there and that would render any chance of them purchasing a system.

Yes, we all saw that. As amazing as it is to believe some people prefer to discuss things that don't involve fanboyism and which system renders the most realistic grass.

I was referring to the small faction of the people in this thread that actual believe this.
