Watch, the Ipod touch will be the next hand held game system to beat. Ive been playing games on it for a week and I'm loving it. The system is more powerful than PSP and DS. The touch screen and accelerometer are great for gaming control. The device fits easily in my pocket. I never thought I would like an apple product.

The PSP is nearly dead with developers abandoning the system. And Ipod can do all the PSP can and more.

http://www.gadgetmadness.com/archives/20081125-new_apple_ipod_touch_gaming_handheld_in_disguise.php

Ive been playing

Fieldrunners

Kroll

Hero of sparta

Chopper

Brothers in arms

Sentry Alpha

Crazy Tanks

Same here. Besides, it's too late to put a dent in Nintendo's global domination with the DS.

I doubt so. How well does the few games on iPod Touch sell? Also since Apple releases a new model like every year. Are the devs going to make the game playable on all of them or just the latest one?

more powerful than a psp? i haven't played on one, but when i've seen people play it seems awkward as your thumbs take up both sides of the screen, where as on ds you're looking at the top screen or using a stylus.

Ah I doubt it :P. I still believe Apple should mak a gaming console. Call it the "iSphere". You heard it here first.

The first model of touch only had 432 MHz I believe. Still more powerful in terms of numbers though.

ipod touch sucks for games... everything i've tried so far is bunk. mobile gaming has always been garbage.

i'll stick with DS/PSP thx. i like games with a bit more thought and depth - ipod is basically 1 small step up from mobile phone games with a bunk accelerometer that doesn't work properly after a few minutes.

maybe next time apple. maybe next time.

Even Metal Gear Touch or w/e looks like a pathetic flash game, it just looks like still images of MGS4 with enemies you can click on to kill, without proper buttons, even if some games do look better then GoW or Crisis Core I gurantee there will never be a game 20% as good. The DS and PSP both have quite a range of unique worthwhile titles, their worst games will always be better then the iPhone's best games.

I played some of these Ipod games on my brother's Ipod. The only one that I liked was one in which you used your fingers to control a skateboard. But even that game only kept me entertained for like 15 minutes. The lack of buttons is what limits it when it comes to gaming.

If more develpoers gave the PSP a chance , it would have taken off more than it did. The Classic remakes on PSP are second to none, such as FF1 & 2, Cactlevania DXC, both Megaman titles, etc.

Have you -seen- MGS Touch? If Koji can't get a decent looking game out of it, I'm pretty damn sure no one else is going to get much better.

nah, it was limited by the controls imho. so many things you cant do when you're missing one analog stick, and have no touch screen.

Point 3 debunks the "omg one has more ram!!!!" I knew it already, but I'm glad something can explain it well, great list. There is nothing I'd want from an iPod Touch or iPhone I can't get from my PSP and cellphone, my cell is about $20 a month, my PSP is $0 a month, it works out pretty well.

iphone / ipod touch destroy the PSP for anything web related. last i checked the PSP had no GPS built in either... so yeah, for browsing, google maps, gps, videos, iphone just destroy the PSP. PSP obviously has 'some' better games though :P

Yep, PSP will do some form of browsing, but its slow and doesn't work too well, though if you only intend to do a bit of random surfing when you're away from home, its good enough, just not good for much, also you can get the GPS add-on too and PSP would still be cheaper and more worthwhile :o But yeah iPhone would likely win browser wise.

PSP is a great little system for many things, but Ipod touch / Iphone honestly decimate it for everything web related, even with a GPS enable PSP it's like night & day imho. the speed, like you said, is terrible. PSP is also a bit ugly imho, and a bit large. it's not a true mobile device imho, unless you wear baggy clothes or carry it in your back pocket like some weirdo hipsters. so yeah, depends on what you want. crappy games with excellent web / gps - go ipod/iphone. games, clunkiness, less portability, slower web, pay to add gps, etc, go PSP.

It all comes down to what you intend to do with it, and what you need it for. If you prefere to game at home and just need something for browsing and maybe some music or something, iPhone would probably be a better choice, but if you want the games PSP has, and would prefere to do that, it would probably be the better choice.

The Ipod Touch is not in the same league as the DS or PSP. The games serve different purposes, those being that the Touch's games are meant for very short sessions (less than an hour basically) while the DS or PSP can be played for as long as you want.

No.

The controls are the worst problem. No stylus, no d-pad, no analog stick -- one touch screen can only go so far.

Apple isn't putting gaming as their priority obviously, but oddly enough they've surprised me. The game i Love Katamari on the iPhone was one of those surprises. I'm also surprised at the lack of progressive thinkers in this thread (though what can I expect from the internet). People that think in obsolutes are old fashioned, obsolutes such as "no buttons is always bad" and "apple is never good." Try thinking out of the box.

I have an ipod touch (16 GB) and only very simple games work for it, like iphysics and that maze game (all via jailbreak mod)

I would never buy a game for it

Please explain how not having buttons is something other than bad.

I was talking about the Ipod Touch 2g as the better gaming platform. all the reviews I have read of the 2g state it is signi signifantly faster in rendering 3D graphics than the Ipod Touch first get and the Iphone.

http://www.ipodhacks.com/article.php?sid=2632

There are plenty more articles as well and most reviewers say the GPU has been upgraded in the second gen Ipod Touch as well as the processor speed.

There are plenty more articles as well and most reviewers say the GPU has been upgraded in the second gen Ipod Touch as well as the processor speed.

it'll still never be anything more than novelty gaming imho. just like mobile gaming. -limited controls (check) -limited power (check) -limited, short term appeal (check) it's neat, don't get me wrong. but i can't see it ever being a serious contender for handheld gaming given its obvious flaws... worst of which being the controls.

[QUOTE="Svarthek"]Apple isn't putting gaming as their priority obviously, but oddly enough they've surprised me. The game i Love Katamari on the iPhone was one of those surprises. I'm also surprised at the lack of progressive thinkers in this thread (though what can I expect from the internet). People that think in obsolutes are old fashioned, obsolutes such as "no buttons is always bad" and "apple is never good." Try thinking out of the box.WAIW

Please explain how not having buttons is something other than bad.

didn't katamari on iphone/ipodtouch get like a 5/10 your something on ign?

4.5 actually. Gameplay got a 4.0.

Like I said, a touch screen alone will only go so far.

Games on the iPod Touch do nothing more than entertain you for like 15 minutes. Games on the PSP/DS however, can get you hooked for weeks. I have all 3, and I have to say, I never considered my iPod a gaming device.

Imagine playing an FPS with everything controlled only by the Touch screen. The Touch screen has to be used for everything. Movement, aiming, shooting, etc. Sure, you could just have an on screen button for certain things, but that clutters the screen. A Touch screen by itself is just not capable of giving an intuitive set up.

Exactly... The Touch can't deliver the same kind of variety that other systems can. Strategy, shooters, flight, etc.

Is that why iD software is developing a game for Ipod?

Also when a private deeloper tried to get licensing to port Quake to Ipod iD said they are working on their own version.

Good for them, that doesn't prove anything though.
