Is 825gb hard drive space acceptable for a next gen system?

According to the source of nearly all my knowledge - Wikipedia - PS5 will have only 825gb of space. I wonder if that includes OS or not lol. But that seems pretty low. I get that it's a fancy shmancy SSD, but still, games are getting bigger and bigger. Shit, Modern Warfare is at least 200GB. Imagine Modern Warfare 2? lol. At least Xbox sort of does better - 1 tb. But yea, I was hoping for 2tb. Your thoughts, SW? Is 825gb acceptable for a next gen system? Will you be upgrading it right away?

It's likely that includes the OS. Typically, SSDs of that size have 960 GB, so 100 or so GB for the OS makes sense.

Actually yes, they are more than enough for the majority of people that buy them, I know a lot of people that have a PS4, and just me and a friend of more than 20 people have replaced the HDD.

That was my line of thinking as well. You never get access to the full-spec.

OT: Yeah, it's a bit lackluster. Especially for those with slow-internet/caps.

Given the way this gen has gone, it's enough for 5-7 games.

I bought a 4TB external that will have all my PS4 games on it.

I'm hoping for 3 USB ports in the back. VR and externals.

Depends on how much space games take up. And how much those proprietary SSD's cost (based on the Vita memory cards, I'm not looking forward to it).

I've been pretty ok with the 1TB. I don't play that many games at once to have a lot of games installed. A good chunk of my PS4's space is actually take up by video capture.

Of course its not... Why do you think Sony and Microsoft went out their way to walk about expandable storage and MS even went the extra mile with partnering with a storage company.

1TB day's are over... F*** on my library alone 500GB =

2. BFV,
3. Half-Life Alyx
4. Red Dead Redmption 2.

7-8 Next gen games and that NVME is over.

I've been using a 500gb SSD in my Pro and it's fine. I rarely play more than a game at a time. Ideally it'd be nice to have all 300+ games downloaded and ready for play, but it's not worth the extra money I'd have to spend.

So the PS5 is big in physical size but small in storage space. Not only that, it has a prego version making it even bigger. 😎

it'll have to be i suppose. 1TB is not great in terms of capacity. 2TB would have been ideal but for cost reasons that's not happening.

in saying that i will certainly take an 825GB-1TB SSD over a 2TB HDD. if the next gen consoles were still on HDDs it would be horrendous.

It's nice that the PS5 will also use standard off the shelf PCIE4 SSDs too though. it's one thing i love about sonys approach to storage on their consoles since the PS3 (yeah...lets not talk about the vita). HDD dies? just get another one, restore the OS and away you go.

I hope Sony also have a bootloader that will allow the PS5 to boot from a secondary SSD in the even that the primary SSD fails. It would be a shame to have to replace a PS5 years from now just because the internal SSD packed it in. As i understand it that wont be a user replaceable part. its built right into the mobo.

I hope its the same for the XSX too. i'm not thrilled about their vita memory card setup. they should let the user use off the shelf hardware too to expand the XSX storage.

Depends how games will be packaged now. Games are bigger this gen because assets aren't compressed much due to the fact that consoles still used HDDs. Faster console = faster compression/decompression cycles. I'm expecting games to have less file sizes now for the next gen.

@osan0: Trouble with the whole off the shelf thing with the Sony expandable storage is that NVME's at those speeds aren't on the shelves and the ones that come close cost $200 for 1TB.

@Grey_Eyed_Elf: that will change in time. they are due by the end of the year and costs will go down next year. that 200 quid price is probably a bit of a cash grab at launch for the enthusiast sector. competition and improvements in tech will drive that price down.

the PS5 still has 825GB internally so its not like users will need 1TB of extra storage day one (but the option will be there i suppose if they do want to go mad).

over the life of the PS5 the off the shelf approach will pay off for the end user. they will have more options.

MS will probably have a similar price for the XSX external SSD card thingy (maybe a bit cheaper as its slower) and it is unlikely to drop in price over the life of the console (because why would it? like any console accessory its a nice way to make a chunk of money back on the hardware).

If you think about it XBOX will also have around the same capacity. "1TB" drives are around 960GB(?) because of the whole 1,000 units instead of 1,024 scam, and the difference could be for reserved space for OS or something. At the very least Sony is being upfront with the specs.

@jasonofa36: if anything its the CPU that would dictate compression. from a HDD perspective you would want the game to be as compressed as possible. more compression means less data needs to be retrieved from the drive. but the more its compressed the more of a burden it is on the CPU to decompress. that's the trade off.

you are correct overall though i that hopefully games can be more compressed. both consoles have much better CPUs than their last gen counterparts and they both gave customised hardware to accelerate the decompression too.

so hopefully the increase in size wont be too big. but i fully expect to see games get bigger in terms of GB still.

But yeah, Zen 2 for next gen is a huge leap and will surely help with the decompression. Also the PS5's SSD is said to help with this too.

At least for Series X it will allow for an external for BC games, which should help mediate some space concerns.

No. Even 1TB isnt enough with some games weighing in over 100GB. Plus you have the system OS as well as inaccessible reserved space.

I tried to tell y’all. If you were getting a SSD, it was gonna be small and drive the price of the console up. Why even bother releasing a “all digital” console right at launch unless you’re worried about sticker shock?

I've always stuck to 512GB to 1 TB drives for my games on my PC, it is plenty of space if you manage it well.

The only problem is that an initial game might be 80 GB, but after DLC, updates, patches, additional content, suddenly you see that game creep up on your drive space and one day you find that 80 GB game is suddenly 130 GB.

I don't plan on getting the PS5, not early anyways. The size doesn't seem to be an issue to me though. I guess it depends on how big the games will be. I have 475GB SSD for my pc and it's more than enough for games. I have around 15 games installed, 4 of which are big. I still have about half space and I just uninstall games I don't play if it starts looking full. I have 931GB Hybrid Data Drive for movies, pdfs and music, which helps but I wouldn't have that shit on a console anyway. I also don't play shit games like CoD, I wouldn't have that installed if it were 20GB, let alone 200GB LOL

Honestly no. I ran out of space on my 500GB PS4 very quickly and it wasn't even that much games that I installed and I had to buy a 2TB external hard drive for it. The PS5 current storage isn't enough and I bet you that even fewer games will use more storage.

It should of at least have 3 to 4TB but because the PS5 uses SSD which is very expensive, it's probably the reason why they used less then 1TB instead.

I want to know how much of that 825gb is usable and how much is reserved for os/updates. If it's only 700gb, then it isn't really enough. I like having numerous games on my console to choose from at a time. With game sizes being as large as they are, I just don't see this being enough. I'll make due for a while though.

If you have 15 games installed on a 500 gb SSD, then those are not big games.

I typically need 50 games installed on my console because I typically play 50 games at a time. I can't imagine what other options there is when you ran out of space. This is absolute terrible news for Sony.

I have a 4TB external drive so, lots of space. I am still trying to figure out what to do when you are out of space on the internal drive. If only there was a solution. 😎

sony could have given the system 1tb instead of 825. I think the 825gb is just that 825gb ssd not including the space the the OS or whatever needs.

Not if you'll want to install more than 3 proper next gen games like in UE5 demo (them multi million poly assets with 8k textures take up a shit ton of space).
