Hello,

So my dear friends, third person survival horror has been popular genre but this game was underappreciated. this game has amazing atmosphere, a great story, a fun gameplay etc. when compare it to other horror games. this game truly shine. the whole light and darkness mechanic is really well done.

i believe its better than resident evil 4, dead space and evil within. remedy are truly the best third person developer ever. it remind me of max payne like if max payne was horror game.

i was never entertain by any third person survival horror game that much like alan wake. obviously its not better than horror FPS Like FEAR, System shock or Stalker. but compare to other third person horror games. its masterpiece.

what do you think my friends?

is it best third person horror game of all time?

The beginning of Remedy's decline. At least it wasn't bad, like Quantum Break.

Yuck, Alan Wake is a great game because of its gameplay/setting/atmosphere/enemies etc, I can't even remember what the story was about. I would Google it, but then I would have to give a shit :(

I might still give it to Dead Space but it's up there. Definitely better than any Resident Evil. But I may be wrong since I'm agreeing with Ghost.

One of the things I love about System Shock 2 in stark contrast to typical horror fair is that player constantly hears the enemies in advance, it had 0 jump scares and enemies appear quite regularly, with the player never quite sure of their location. Much like the ending of Invasion Of the Body Snatchers they start screaming out in ar. Couple this with tight rigid corridors cutting viewpoint, where the player borderline hobbles, security systems set off at the drop of the hat and you have a constantly tense experience.

The sound effects for many enemies are screams of pain with some specially asking to be killed, which indicates they are consciously aware of their current state, which works great in tandem with the text/audio/ghosts humanizing them pre-disaster.

Aside from typical flesh-and-blood it also features uniquely unorthodox mechanical enemies ranging from ED-209 to C3P0.

---

Alan Wake is OK. But it didn't blow me away. The characters are fairly bland, the enemies tend to black humanoid enemies over and over and the actual constant monologuing really started to piss me off, pretty sure if he went for a shit he's probably give you a 6 paragraph explanation of the stool, in case you didn't get it.

I liked the visuals of the setting, it's 100% Twin Peaks. When it directly tries to emulate the series, be it wink wink references or what is basically the white lodge, it falls on face. Twin Peaks is endearing, it's eccentricities makes the characters memorable, it's slow incremental transition absurdest comedy melodrama to horror/fantasy works. Here, it starts off bland, occasionally reminding you of something superior, then jumps the gun with a complete emotional disconnect.

If Sniper thinks it is, then no it isn't.

Even if it was, so what? That's like saying Starcraft is the best RTS. I mean yea probably but when there's only 5 games going for the title, who fuckin cares?

lol no

It was cool for the 1st couple of hours but then it became repetitive as hell. And its hardly "horror". The game is thrilling at the beggining but the horror soon desapears to give place to action

RE4 and TEW are FAAAAR superior games when it comes to action, survival AND, especially, horror

still a fun game though

Ehmm ..

As a huge fan of horror games since mid 90s i would say Alan wake is good overall but i wouldnt go that far to say it is the best horror game of all time, i mean game had plenty of repetitive parts.

For example everything was taking place in the woods. Again and again and again. The game had the same pace and same enemies from minute 1 to the end. If youve played the game for 10-15 minutes for example youve seen it all.

The story was good, the concept was good also but it stopped being a horror game pretty early since everything was predictable and the very same.

Game had a nice atmosphere at first then because game was taking place on the very same settings and you had to go against the very same enemies got old pretty fast as well. Atmosphere for horror games is everything. It lacked that. Original Dead Space had a very horror atmosphere for example till the very end. You didnt know also when youll get jumped, what to meet next, where you heading to, enemies were truly horrific, scarejumps all over the place. Alan wake after few minutes...lacked alot of this.

I would say Alan wake was a good story driven thriller shooter than horror.

Soundtrack of Alan Wake was great and story good enough.

7/10 here

TEW was even worse. it was just so bad that i couldnot believe anyone can make a game this bad. but shinji mikami does.

TEW2 is much better and superior despite having terrible hub system and bad story. TEW2 is just ok.

At the time I played Alan Wake, its direct competition was Heavy Rain. Just like every 90% of every 3rd-person game I have, I got bored with both games. At least, Alan Wake had fantastic controls compared to Heavy Rain. Alan Wake is a good game. I'm just not in the mood to play it.

At the farthest point of the game before I uninstalled it. I progressed farther in the game. But, that was while I was gaming with my nephew on the 360.

LOL, no. It had barely serviceable shooting combined with brain-dead, repetitive, bullet sponge enemies. While the story starts off well enough, it falls apart about half way through and even just running past enemies to each check point becomes tedious.

@ghosts4ever: So this game(TEW) sucks because:

1.It's 30 FPS: Which is a shitty opinion,30 FPS won't make a game inferior. It was locked to 30 FPS to make the game feel more like a Horror game than making it like a fast paced game. and tell you what 60 framerate is just necessary for fast paced games and TEW wasn't that fast paced.

2.Letterbox: Letter box allows you to focus more in front of the character than distracting yourself with unnecessary parts of the screen which makes the game more scarier.

3.Confusing Story: Has he played any Silent Hill game in his life ? Just having a confusing story doesn't make the game suck.Regarding to this game confusing story adds more replay value in the game(Forces you to re-watch all the cutscenes to make out the story)

4.graphics are bad : It's far from the bad and it looks great imo. Graphics won't make a game inferior in my eyes I still enjoy lots of old games much more than most of today's games despite having lower graphics.

5.Controls are bad : wrong. Keyboard and mouse make it great and it just needs a little practice.

6.He didn't scared from the game: Because he was more interested in bitching about the game than actually try to feel himeself in the game.(I myself scared in some parts and one chase scene was so exciting and stressful that my heart was pumping like crazy)

7.Game didn't have any originality: Wrong it is a horror game with emphasize on booby traps(Which was a new thing in 3rd person Horror games)

8.in 7:30 enemies didn't attack him because he was playing in easiest difficulty otherwise enemies would have attacked him.(I have tried this tactic before)

9.It's repetitive: No it isn't you have stealth, cutscenes, set pieces, combat, cutscenes and exploration.

He just sucks at horror games. And I rather to replay this game than discussing his shitty taste in horror games.

RE4 is the most overated game i ever played. And i played this DAY 1 on Gamecube AND i had the very same opinion the moment i played and finished it in day 2. I wont say Alan Wake is better than RE4 because will start a war here but ill say RE4 was better in other elements than Alan Wake including horror. If i had to choose one of the two i would go with Alan Wake personally but not for its horror elements, rather than the mystery, story and soundtrack ... and why not shooting elements were better ( though i rarely playing horror games for shooting )

A repetitive game like Alan Wake can't be better than RE4 or Dead Space.

AW was in development hell, to be fair.

I really, really love Alan Wake and even Quantum Break wasn't half bad at all. Alan Wake as the best survival horror game? Not even close and I consider Alan Wake suspense then a true horror game.

Both TEW and RE4 had more enemy variety and while RE4 didnt let you shoot while moving (wich may be outdated now but at the time there was no game like it, it was the first to implement the "over the shoulder" mechanic after all, at least as good as it did. Splinter Cell had it but was terrible), it was detrimental to the horror aspect. Alan Wake was fvckin boring for the most part. Only its Twin Peaks like atmosphere was cool, the rest... not so much

TEW had its share of problems but did horror and survival way better than Alan Wake did. I dont remember being constantly concerned about ammo and resources while playing AW... so yeah, terrible "survival horror" game that does both "horror" and "survival" pretty badly

While I really enjoyed Alan Wake I wouldn’t say that it’s the best. I would rate Resident Evil 4, The Evil Within, and Dead Space higher. Quantum Break was quite good as well.

Loved Alan Wake and I used to read Stephen King novels, I enjoyed the story & the game mechanics a lot, it's a distinct title I'd rather not think if I enjoyed it more than other games such as past favorites like Dead Space & Silent Hill....I'm a big fan of the genre, recently finished Evil Within 2 and loved it. I don't know if AW is better but it's definitely up there with some of my favorites

I wasnt a fan of Alan wake TBH, it was an OK game at best and American Nightmare was a bad game as far as I am concerned. Dead Space 1 and 2 are the best two third person horror games I can think of right now and they shit all over Alan Wake in horror IMO.

I'm sorry but these two points sound like really bad excuses.

1. 30 FPS won't make a game inferior? So you're saying worse performance won't make a game worse? Ya know, playing a puzzle game at smooth 60FPS still feels like a puzzle game, it won't suddenly feel like a 200MPH racing game. Framerate doesn't dictate game speed.

2. Ah, that's another way to spin the fact that the game was so crappily optimized that they had to cut 30% of the screen resolution. So um, seeing 30% less of the scary stuff will make the game scarier, right?

Dead Space is the best, but Alan Wake is also very good. Barry Wheeler is the man. I have him as my Steam avatar. LOL

I felt very unsettled the entire time I played Alan Wake- more than most Resident Evil games actually.

I wish the story would have been a little less convoluted though.

Solid game

Ghost just loves to trash any popular franchise that he hasn't even played for a minute.

I am a gameplay first, graphics and framerate second gamer. that is why 30 FPS doesn't bother me.

There are lots of 30 FPS games(Like GTA 3,MGS 3,TEW,RE original and remake,God Hand) that I enjoyed much more than some 60 FPS games(Like Sleedping Dogs,MGS V) framerate won't make a game superior.

60 FPS just makes a game more responsive and fluid which is a great for games that need high reaction time(First Person Shooter games,Hack'n Slash games fighting games) which Survival Horror is not.

I don't really get the hate for Letterbox instead of whining about it I decided to focus more on the game.(Anyway letterbox just blocks you seeing character legs and a little of sky)

Silent Hill has the best story and disturbing horror that I've ever seen in Survival Horror games.

I just wished that the combat to be better(Just played the first 2 which melee weapons were annoying to use. They should have completely removed them)

It's still a fantastic game, if you can look past the now dated graphics and gameplay.
