DD wont happen until all internet connections are extremely fast, and hard drives are insanely cheap.
Blu ray is the future, DD is way off into the distant future.

I don't understand why they need to upgrade anymore from DVD. I like DVD as it was as a gaming disc format or a video disc format. DVD's were just fine, they don't really need to go into Blu-ray and HD DVD in my opinion. Dion4ever
they were people like you who said why go into cd's? who needs 500 MB (in the beginning they were only ~ 500MB big)? or why gointo dvd's? cd are more than enough. it will never be enough, as long as prgress will go onformats will be bigger
wow a ps 3 hater that don't think don't think blu-ray is the future.
lol you been downloding games, movies ect.
how about you try downloading a game that is 9gigs or more and see if you like waiting 2 hours before you play your game.
lol people crap all over devil may cry 4 for the ps 3 because of waiting 20 mins or so but yet the 360 fans wants to download an intire games that are the size of gears 2 or halo 3.
nice try to attempt to dis the ps 3 when in fact blu-ray is what made the ps 3 out sell the 360 last year but ha it is not the future.
no media tell that to walmart, target, best buy, circuit city ect. and see if they agree with you.
do you now how fast the movie industry would crumble if there is no media for some one to walk in the store and pick a movie.

DD is going to mean people can walk into any store with a flash drive, go up to the "rental kiosk" (which could be anywhere) and walk out with the movie they want to rent. It's going to mean instantly streaming any movie you want to rent whenever you want. We're pretty close to the point where you're going to pay $15 a month (or whatever) to stream whatever movies you want via your Xbox / Playstation.
That's powerful stuff - why worry about that disc and crap? Why not just have a thing that plugs into your TV, records shows like a TIVO, and lets you plug in a drive with a movie loaded from a kiosk or stream shows?

Because the system doesn't work in two key places.1. Portable locations such as the car.
2. A friend's house, particularly one who has no online access.
Anyway, DD has to compete with the Redbox now--self-service disc rentals with remarkable ease of use. They're using DVDs now, but I don't think there's anything that'd prevent them starting a jump to BD.
I don't think so as even now it's future is looking very rocky at least as a Movie delivery media.
I'm sure with some improvement in speeds, it will be around as a useful storage device but even then I think for Games, a nice Big HDD is the key in the future as the games will be loaded onto that HDD and the B.R. disk can be put back in it's case and that is for those who just must have the hard copy as I believe DD is here already since I have been DL'ing through XBL to get movies, games, TV shows, interviews, heck you name it.
So MS & Apple are up & running with DD already, just how big a role does B.R. really have in the near future.
PS: Don't take this wrong as I am certain to have a B.R. player of some sort, more then likely in a new MS console but other then being a disk for the storage of the content to transfer to HDD for speedy gaming, ( heck, DVD9's can do that too ;) ) just what else is it going to be good for ?
Any thoughts good or bad ?

Digital Distribution Video Special
We go hands on with the Apple TV, Vudu, and Xbox 360 to choose the best option for renting movies from the couch.

Who is he ? An MLB prospect ?
Nope. This is the future: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Holographic_Versatile_Disc HVD = 160 times the capacity of a single-layer Bluray Disc :)ErkiduLast I checked, it was still in the prototype stage and costs are still prohibitively high. Also, the transfer rate necessary for uncompressed video would clog even the fastest drive buses to date.

I've known about holographic versatile discs for ages. They look great, and are a huge leap in data storage. Game developers wont need to worry about space issues for a while, surely.
everybody who had the opportunity to watch a blu-ray movie on a nice HDTV will admit that it's nothing like watching a dvd.
DD isn't and won't be the future for quite some time. you would need high speed internet connections area-wide and that isn't and won't be the case in the near future. there are still to many 56k users out there who don't have the access to high speed internet.
i also dislike the whole thought of only having DD with all the DRM involved. digital distribution for rentals is okay and would be really comfortable but if i buy something, i prefer hard copies.

so now we will need to buy flash cards then the unit to put the flash card in then the movie. plus it be way to easy to get movies for free look what happening to the music industry. people find the way to get free music. media format is the easiest way to make sure that would not happen.so now we will need to buy flash cards then the unit to put the flash card in then the movie. plus it be way to easy to get movies for free look what happening to the music industry. people find the way to get free music. media format is the easiest way to make sure that would not happen.GARRYTH
The reality is - if you showcase a movie, song, whatever, you have no means of stopping someone with a digital videocamera or sound recorder from capturing the audio / video and distributing it. There are videos of bands performing live on YouTube (legal videos) taken by people attending the show.
Now - what's to stop them from doing the same thing with content and distributing it illegally? Nothing. Nothing at all. People are paying money because they want to - they want to do it right, they want the convenience, and they want the quality that comes with a legitimate copy of the film. By streaming the content via a digital rental service, the content is actually *more* secure.
Why is that? You're not handing them a disc. Attempts at breaking the encryption on a disc cannot be detected easily- there is no means of knowing (without using legally hazy rootkits) if someone is plugging your disc into a computer to try and steal your content - when you stream you have feedback in the decoding process - and you at least know that from your server to wire coming out of their box you have security.
Nothing is 100% secure of course, but you at least have a "pretty good idea" that the person streaming via your subscriber service is paying you for content - and not going home with a disc trying to make illegal copies or something like that.
Digital Distribution is the future with things like On-Demand and Netflix. You just get an account and purchase your movies online and your account keeps everything organized. You than just log on to your account and pick a movie and stream it. pins_basicOTOH, people are comfortable with having the thing in their hand. And there's the increased prevalence of self-service kiosks (like redbox). Perhaps at a later point someone will come up with the idea of a self-service game sale kiosk that'll let you buy games as quickly, either using a vault of thinpaks or an automated disc burner. Just a thought that shows how physical and virtual media can still be viable.
