As weird as it sounds, some believe the Blu-Ray Victory is not a Sony victory so much as a Microsoft Victory.

Dumb thinking if you ask me. Thought I share it.

The guy that wrote that is looking at the past....the PS3 isnt 599 anymore, the price to produce the PS3 is significantly low....why in the world would he think just because the PS3 suffered some bumps in the road because of Blu-Ray in the start means it will continue to benefit the 360 in the long run?

Its a win for the PS3 and Sony, has nothing to do with the 360.

But bluray is going to give a big boost to PS3 sales.

Why buy a stand alone Bluray player when you can buy one that also plays games?

Huh the PS3 is catching X360 in sales and it's cheaper when you look at the features. That article is dwelling in the past.

why does everyone think blu-ray is going to be the next movie format?

It's basically the same thing as DVD.

Depends on the pricing scheme for BR players over the next year or two. Right now it's a huge advantage for Sony; the PS3 is one of the cheapest BR players on the market, and because its the only future-proof BR player, its the clear choice for most HD format adopters. But as prices of standalone players drop the PS3 will quickly lose its advantage, especially if MS and Nintendo are able to keep their respective consoles cheaper than the PS3.

Another major problem for Sony is that the average consumer doesn't give a rat's ass about BR. Many don't have HDTVs, many don't understand the advantages of HD formats, and because of the high price (not just of the players, but of the disks as well) it will be at least a couple of years before BR truly goes mainstream (I believe the estimate is around 2010). With the VHS to DVD jump we saw not only a huge jump in video and sound quality, but also in functionality. Scene selection, slow-mo, scene skipping, no rewind etc. But with DVD to BR/HD-DVD we only have an improvement in A/V quality, and if the sound quality of the average iPod (128kb/s bitrate and those crappy earbuds) is any indication, the public really doesn't care about A/V quality.

So you could definitely argue that BR is giving MS a significant advantage, it has forced Sony to release a more expensive product chock-full of features the average consumer can't take advantage of, which has slowed the PS3's sales. BR is very much a double-edged sword for Sony, it could make the PS3 a very successful product, or it could give MS the advantage.

If I had to bet and I do ;) - my moneys on D.D. along with huge HDD's.

Though a B.R. will be useful as a sorta permanent record; the D.D. will be the quick, cheap convenient way to watch HD movies and all other HD content in the very near future. IMHO

Microsoft is a board member of the HD-DVD consortium, Invested in the format, and helped develop it. Blu-ray win, means a hit (maybe not such a big one) to MS.

No, its quit serious. While the Blu-Ray thing is great for selling Consoles, is it going to hurt Game Sales? BEcause the person views it as a Blu-ray player and possibly a games syestem.

If PS3s hardware install base grows, it only means more software will sell... How is less software going to sell while there are more PS3s in peoples homes?

And why are you even worried about PS3s software sales in the first place? PS3 is doing as good as it should be doing in terms of software sales...

That's true, the blu-ray player add on for the 360 will be pretty damn expensive, I can't see why they'd do that when for just a little bit more you could get a PS3, and have the best of both worlds..

As for those trying to claim a 360 victory, I am pretty much speechless :|

PS2 being a cheap DVD player didnt seem to hurt it much, so I dont see why this should hurt the PS3.

Depends on the area. Here in Toronto, Telus (a Canadian telecommunications company) is releasing a 100mb/s broadband service, and with fibre optics we could see a huge increase in speed. Also the movies wouldn't necessarily be 25gb. So while digital distribution definitely isn't ready for the mainstream, there's definitely a market for it.

100 mb/s. Only big universities have that type of speed. How mcuh will it cost? 60 $'s a month?

It's not serious. Blu-ray player or not, people have bought a PS3. You can be sure they will use it for games as much as Blu-ray movies.

If that was the problem we would already be seeing low software sales for PS3... And it's doing just fine, contrary to popular belief.

Xbox 360 had a slight lead in software in it's first year out, (2005, 2006) but that's because it had Gears of War for one, and it also had a few more compelling exclusive (at the time) games released. PS3 had zero killer apps, and not quite as many exclusives. But still it was pretty even.

This is definately not a win for MS but a bit of a lose. As for Sony it is a victory but I dont know how big of a victory because Digital Downloads is already in affect. People will download movies no matter what size because people are lazy. Nobody wants to go to blockbuster anymore, they want their movies delivered. Neflix, Gamefly, blockbuster online, Amazon all deliver for free but now to get home and turn your Apple TV, PS3, 360 and have the movies downloaded already is even better. Yeah 20 gig movie might take awhile to download but as the 360 for example, it can download at all times even when you are at work and instead of having your mailer list, you have you download list downloading at all times. People dont watch movies every single day. With services like Xbox live with fast download speed, which are going to get faster, in a weekend you could download 2 movies at least with a basic broadband and with Verizon Fios you can download maybe like 10 or more. Also we are forgetting that compression is getting better and that maybe HD movies will fit on a regular DVD one day. I know Warner Brothers has been working on HD movies on DVD9. Bluray has a window but in my opinion it isnt that large and that is why I will not buy one Bluray or HDdvd(this one is obvious now) movie. Just dont have faith in a disk format after DVD. Flash yes Bluray no. Flash is the real next format. As for the PS3, well now it is just a gaming machine because if you look at the prices of Bluray players on Amazon they are at 350 and PS3 is selling at 399. PS3 is a game console now and the advantage of bluray only goes to gamers not movies watchers anymore.

No, its quit serious. While the Blu-Ray thing is great for selling Consoles, is it going to hurt Game Sales? BEcause the person views it as a Blu-ray player and possibly a games syestem.

I mean you know what happened to the PS2 and everyone was buying it like a cheap dvd and software sales dropped.... oh right, that didn't happened. But seriously, the more PS3 are out there the more game software can and will be sold, also the more Blu-ray disks get sold. Tell me why is that scenario bad for Sony?

Im not saying its bad for the Company sony, I just think it has a chance of hurting Software sales if everyone views it as a Blu-Ray player first and a Game syestem second.

Its a Playstation brand system, the brand Playstation is 10 years worth of name recongnition for gaming, the word blu ray is only a year and a few months of recognition for HD movies. Which do you honestly think people will think of when they opt for a PS3?

Image how long it would take to download a 25GB HD movie? People arent ready for that.

the movies are around 8 gigs not 25 gigs

1080p movies with DTS 6.1 or better sound at a good enough bit rate for AVC H.264 are from 7GB to 15GB without extras or uncompressed sound. How long and how tech savvy would a person in america be to use this download service, how much time would it take. Now ask yourself the same question for the rest of the world.

Let me put my 2 cents in since I actually sell HDTVs and Blu-ray players. The HD penetration rate in the U.S. is over 35% now this same time last year it was at 20% so more and more people are buying HD televisions. In my retail store that is the only kind we sell and the price of HD televisions have come down greatly so in few years the HD penetration rate will be well over 50% probably closer to 60%.

When people go buy hdtvs they talk to people like me and thats when people like me explain the advantages of hd televisions and what devices will further enhance their experience. 1/3 customers that I sell hdtvs to buy a blu-ray player. Actually more people rather buy a standalone blu-ray player than a PS3 just because the PS3 is seen as a toy to most older adults. Believe me I've tried explaining to them the PS3 is the better investment, but alot of them don't listen and buy a Sony or Samsung standalone player.

You must not have a Blu-Ray player if you think the jump between Blu-Ray and DVD isn't significant. My tv is worth over 1400 bucks and if you think people like me who have spent a considerable amount on our televisions don't want to see an improvement when we watch our movie collections then you need a reality check. DVDs aren't cutting it enymore. People with hdtvs want better sound and better picture quality which they get with blu-ray. If you hook up a DVD player to a hdtv you don't get any better a picture than you would get with a standard definition tv.

You are right to one extent by putting a Blu-Ray drive into the PS3 Sony did indeed slow PS3 sales due to the price, but you've must have missed the announcements that have been made in the last few months. People are choosing Blu-Ray and that is in large part due to the PS3. Now Sony will make way more money on Blu-Ray than they would have on the PS3 anyways. Plus while the PS3 has a Blu-Ray player within the console it will always have an edge and advantage over the other two consoles. I'm not saying that the 360 or WII are like the Dreamcast, but it has been documented that the Dreamcast was outsold by the PS2 in large part due to the DVD drive within the PS2.

Now that the PS3 is offered at a more reasonable price ANY good blu-ray news is good ps3 news and obviously the death of HDDVD is GREAT blu-ray/ps3 news. It will only improve sales and media coverage for the PS3.

Oh and its definitly a victory for Microsoft, I bet all the people they talked into buying an HDDVD drive for their already frustratingly unreliable system are feeling really happy they sunk with the ship on this one...

Then they must not be true HD movies because if what you say is true then a DVD9 which holds 8.5 gigs could have been used to display HD movies so why would Microsoft and Toshiba produced HD-DVD:|

the minority chooses the next tech to be used by the majority

There is a pretty obvious rule declared right in the stickied threads that no Format War discussion is allowed.
