Is buying a PSP for $129 today worth it with the NGP around the corner?

I've never owned a PSP mostly due to price, battery life and i'm not a big fan of portables. But Nintendo changed my mind so I decided to pre-order a 3DS and with that I can go back and pick up some nice DS titles while i'm at it.

Then I thought to myself, wouldn't right now be a good time to get a great deal on a PSP? You can get a PSP 3000 from Amazon BRAND NEW for $129 no tax and free shipping. For those of you who have one, do you think this is a good deal? I mostly like RPGs and adventure games. I'm not a big shooter fan even though I am a 360 owner.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!

I say go for it. The PSP has tons of great games (check out the PSP forum's game recommendation thread, good stuff). Plus the games are going to be fairly cheap too.

I'd say go ahead and get one to, price has come down, games are pretty reasonable, and I don't think we'll see the NGP out till probably November if this year.

if you plan to pick up an NGP asap then save your cash. but if your planning to get it later in its life then a PSP now would be a kewl investment. but look at the games first...see if there anything that interests you. theres no point in getting a PSP or any gaming platform is it has no games that interest you after all. i believe the PSP forum has a suggestions thread. personally i really liked the wipeout games and dungeon siege when i had a PSP.

If you want a PSP, go for it. The NGP is probably 9 months away, maybe more of it only gets a Japan release this fall. Good to have some fun in the mean time.

Saying that, I'll give you the same advice as I gave to someone asking about buying a DS a couple of months back - Why not save a bit of money and get a used one?

Not worth it if your planning on buying NPG. If you buy a psp your UMD games would be a waste since you can't even play them on the NPG.

If you're getting a 3DS and an NGP, don't bother. 3DS should have more than enough games (especially when you combine it with the DS and GB and GBC back catalogues) to hold you over for the rest of your life let alone until the NGP comes out.

^ this is what i'm doing, i'm getting both an the 3DS will hold me over till the NGP comes out, but if someone isn't interested in the 3DS, by all means get a PSP and download the games instead of buying UMDs that way they can transfer later.

I'd wait for after the release of the NGP since it would probably drop to 100.

I think it's worth it. Has lots of great, cheap games. A lot of them are on UMD and super cheap, unavailable legally any other way. And you'll get a chance to get some great games on UMD that won't be on the Playstation store or on the new flash carts for the new PSP.

Also, I don't believe the whole "your UMDs you bought will be worthless" thing. It's not like my SNES carts suddenly became useless when the N64 came out. I kept my SNES & SNES games and still played them. The SNES didn't quit playing SNES games when the N64 came out. I believe the same could be said about the PSP and UMD games once the new one is out.

Go for it. You have 5-6 years worth of games to play.

It's a solid investment, but don't forget; the Core Pack lacks a Memory Stick Duo so that will be an additional purchase unless you already own one. Good news is that the UMD copies of games are often cheaper than the versions on the PS Store, so an original PSP gives you a bit more flexibility.

If I remember correctly, some games like Birth by Sleep aren't even available on the Store and this issue will probably carry over to the PSP's successor.

The fact that the NGP won't have a UMD drive may alone make it worth it. Not all PSP games are available for digital download, and of those that are the physical copy is sometimes cheaper.

I would hold off on the PSP with the 3DS. If you get the PSP, make sure to get as many of the games as possible on digital rather than UMD since they may be transferable to the NGP.

I remember hearing they said you could use your existing PSN account so they should be transferable since the NGP is backward compatible.

Yeah it makes me a sad panda to know that the NGP wont be able to play any of my PSP (UMD that is) games. D:

I was thinking the same thing, being mostly, as far as handhelds are concerned, a DS gamer.

But since NGP is a totally new handheld, and I have no desire to play catch up on PSP games, I've decided to wait for 9 months for the NGP, I think it'll be well worth the wait. :D

It depends on how many PSP games are released for the NGP's online market.

I'd wait until after the NGP comes out, since the price will probably drop on the PSP when that happens.

If you plan on hacking it. If not, then wait for the NGP, then hack it. Handhelds need to be hacked. Now moderate this post.

Not using physical media, but it is BC compatible with the titles on the PS store.
