Hello,

So my friend. peoples are really talking about western games today due to RDR2 delay and announcement but something goes in my mind that lets talk about which is the best wild west game?

In my opinion its no other than Call of Juarez Gunslinger

The game feel like old school arcade shooter but in western setting. it has excellent gameplay and shooting mechanics. the storytelling is awesome and very max payne style.

It took mediocre series and turn into something great. previous games were trash and this game is great.

imo its better than red dead redemption. when red dead redemption focus more on open world, travelling, horse riding from point A to point B, boring cow hearding missions. this game focus on a great gameplay where you shoot the crap out of bandits.

so my dear friends? is it best wild west game ever?

Discuss.

Pretty much 99.99.9.9.9% will prob say Red Dead Redemption.

Outlaws is worth bringing up, gameplay itself is ok, it's mainly the cutscenes that capture the Western well in a time when FPS story was "who gives a shit".

I really love this game. It is definitely fun for that "just wanna kill me some outlaws in the wild west" kind of mood. Red Dead Redemption for the story and just screwing around in the big open world, but Gunslinger is great for just good ol' fashioned killin'.

There are only but a few good Western games: RDR and Gunslinger come to mind.

I wish Ubisoft had the balls to put Far Cry in a historical western setting, alas they go for a modern setting. How absolutely boring.

Gunslinger was pretty cool but I also thought Call of Juarez Bound in Blood was pretty good too.

on a bright side. there is a hope for future call of juarez game by techland because ubisoft own the IP.

maybe open world call of juarez game with gunslinger gameplay?

Techland should made gunslinger 2 instead of working on crappy zombie games like dead island and dying light.

ubisoft publish all COJ game. they own the IP.

but they dont develop it. techland will and thier non linear version will be different from FC/AC formula.

I hate open worlds but western setting is suitable for open worlds.

@ghosts4ever: What is wrong with linear shooters ? I never played Far cry 3 or 4 and thought: yeah this is way better than a linear shooter. Not once.

I did think it while playing Crysis, but that was a sandbox, not an open world.

Open world for me these days means caution, as I feel my actions, the activities and missions I do have zero impact on the world the game is set in and the characters you do them for.

Half Life: clear sense of progression.

Open world shooter: Oh hey you just did this mission, you saved my home town from bring burned down, here is another mission that is slightly different from the last.

I prefer linear shooters or something like linear sandbox instead of open ended.

if next COJ happen. it need to be longer and more varied and more open. not fully open world.

in wild west setting. there is nothing like progression you see. its set in large village and each mission look familiar.

Ye, take Halflife over Far Cry any-day. Has specific pacing to it with none of the copy paste shit. Longer for the sake of being longer is crap. It's why Episode 2 is arguably the best, it's completely condensed down. Although I'll still defend the boat sections of HL2.

Far Cry gives you more options how tackle things, but even that gets old long before the finish line.

There is only one good Far cry game and that was 3. and even that game was just decent game not amazing. i would say FC1 if second half was not so bad that i stop playing.

so obviously Half life better.

I understand and respect your ambivalence my friend. As someone also conditioned in a pattern of cynical thinking, I merely brushed off Far Cry 4, ignoring it until an impulse buy via psychologically exploitative sales.

But while visually interchangeable, as an iterative change, Far Cry 4 is a solid improvement. Many flawed aspects such as obnoxious story-telling and an extended tutorial are pushed to the background in favor of sandbox fun, something Assassins Creed has never overcome.

Farcry 1 was sort of ok, it's flawed but that's what makes it interesting.

Big dollops of shit can add aroma.

The game was quite fun. But I felt the game was held back alot by its weapon progression. Scoring mechanics being tied to make slow mo really stingy, because outside of having the slow mo, the cover-heavy shootouts were all that good as mobility seemed so ineffective.

I liked the plotting and setup of the game and how the recollection of events with the narrator tied to the level.

I like Red Dead Redemption better myself.

Gunslinger certainly has style, and definitely bang for your buck being only $15 or so when it released. I also really liked Bound in Blood, but I like Gunslinger better.

One thing I liked about Gunslinger though was its over-the-top nature to it. I liked Red Dead Redemption, but parts of me misses what they had going for the IP with Red Dead Revolver, with those over-the-top bosses and set piece levels in the campaign.

Hmmm still waiting on a solid fantasy action adventure game with a western setting rather than the tired, same old gothic-medeival crap constantly reused over and over.

I've played only two western-themed games in my lifetime: Gold Rush and Lost Dutchman's Mine.

Not really my favorite setting for games because of the limited tech at the time. I like driving and flying with my games aside from a few exceptions. Plus, I live right smack in the middle of the Old West. Tombstone, AZ is not far from where I live.

Not even the best Call of Juarez game, which is distantly behind RDR and Desperados for its time.

Oh and sunset riders. And that snes game with the cross hairs.

Their big expensive shit is open world, but the stuff that is more mid tier production they let their devs go ham.

On topic: Uh Sunset Riders is rad, and I like me some Oddworld Stranger's Wrath. Didn't care for the first Call of Juarez, but people swear by Bound in Blood. Hated Gun, and Red Dead while having some genuine good aspects, also isn't what I would call a good game, because I don't think a third person shooter where majority of my missions come down to go here, shoot dudes, should be mediocre at being a shooter.

GUN was awesome game. RDR wish it has story as good as GUN.

First 2 COJ suck. the gunslinger is very different game and thus a better.

Well I guess I've played like three western game in total, so it's def up there. Arcade mode was a lot of fun. Other two games being 12 is better than 6 and Red Dead Redemption. All three are pretty great, so I have never played a bad western game. But the winner is RDR though.

Nope. That honor goes to Red Dead Redemption. It not only had more substance but it gave you the full cowboy experience. Stopping robberies, hogtie baddies, drink whiskey, horseback riding, bounty hunting, horse shoe tossing, gambling, the works!

My favourite Western games:

Sunset Riders - A fun multiplayer 2D run & gun shooter (like Metal Slug)

Wild Arms - A fun puzzle-oriented JRPG (like Lufia II)

It's not even the best call of Juarez game.

its the only good COJ game.

You couldn't be more stupid.

then what was good COJ game? the cartel? trash. First one? mediocre. Bound in blood? again mediocre.

Gunslinger was a cool game and one of the few modern FPS I've actually enjoyed.

Another good western themed game is Desperados.

I'm actually surprised that SW likes Sunset Riders.

Amidst all the shit, sometimes you guys actually pull through.

You have bad taste. The first 2 had depth, Gunslinger is simplistic and braindead...like yourself.

I have high standard in games so not every game apeal to me but i respect your opinion.

what depth first 2 game has?

mediocre shoooting? terrible gameplay mechanics? boring story? Bound in blood was COD in wild west featuring Coop.

Gunslinger has by far best mechanic in COJ game ever. its also the only game that doesnot take too seriously. plus silas is waay better protagonist than both mc call brothers.
