a third-person perspective Doom 3?

In other words, is it a true survival horror game like the Silent Hill and Fatal Frame series, or is it just a third-person shooter in outerspace?

I'd say it is survival horror. It doesn't really have anything in common with Doom other than being set in outer space. If RE4 can be classed as survival horror then so can Dead Space. It's a little more focused on action than games like Fatal Frame but it still has the puzzles, exploration and item conservation that are mainstrays of the genre.

I wouldnt say it was survival horror, I mean after upgrading my plasma cutter there was no stopping me. I felt super powerful thus spoiling the "survival horror" aspect.

Loved the game though, it was a great experience from start to finish.

A game doesn't need to be hard to be a survival horror game. It just needs to play a certain way. Silent Hill 2 is one of the best games in the genre but it's also painfully easy on any difficulty setting other than hard. Does that make it not survival horror? Hell no. So what if I have tons of ammo and can kill every enemy with 2-5 handgun shots? It's still a scary as **** game.

Survival horror isn't really a genre. It's just a catch-all term for horror-themed video games.

Action-Horror.

It doesn't really have any very notable survival elements.

No, not really. There arent many scary parts. And you are usually stuffed full with ammo so there isnt much suspense or intensity to the game

Ugh, yes it is. Should we consider F.E.A.R. a survival horror game now :|? Ever stop to wonder why most horror games play pretty similarly? It's because they're in the same freakin genre.

F.E.A.R is probably more of a survival horror game than Dead Space.

F.E.A.R is probably more of a survival horror game than Dead Space.

Dead Space uses almost all of the main gameplay conventions of the survival horror genre, despite being more action orientated. F.E.A.R. is an FPS with moody lighting.

I'm not going to go into some huge spiel about what the genre is defined by, but if you've played any of the original Resident Evil or Silent Hill games then they are perfect examples of what makes a game 'survival horror'. Just think of them as horror themed action/adventure games. Not every horror game is a survival horror game, like Splatterhouse which is a beat-em-up or Echo Night, which is an adventure game.

I wasn't a big Doom 3 fan, yet I really like Dead Space, so no, I don't see it that way.

I see where your coming from, but there is a bit more tactics and ammo conservation in Dead Space. I would call is a survival horror.

On the hardest difficulty it's most definitely a survival horror game. I'm actually stuck at a part because I don't have enough ammo/stasis energy/med packs, and I'm completely overwhelmed by enemies.

I consider Dead Space to be an action game with horror elements. Just like Resident Evil 4 , and the upcoming Resident Evil 5.

It's not a shooter. It's an action-oriented survival-horror. This is not a game where you can easily run through levels and take out enemies with no problem. No, you have take your time and strategically attack the limbs of the Necromorphs, you have to complete a bunch of objectives, you have to solve puzzles, and then there's the whole zero-gravity aspect. Also, just like any survival-horror, ammo and medkits are limited, and you have to carefully manage your inventory. So yeah, Dead Space is survival-horror, not a third-person shooter.

I second that. RE and Silent hill defined it for me in consoles

Why isn't Doom 3 survival horror? Playing on the hardest settings is pretty scary.

Atleast it's being quite a challenge on impossible unlike RE4 on pro.
I like it a lot more than RE4.
