Yes in many cases it keeps us from throwing the controller against the TV. But with the internet it is all too easy to look up a guide when the going gets tough. When if we had a little more patience and explored a little bit more we could figure it out for ourselves. That is what the developer meant for us to do. So is taking the easy way out ruining the experience??

Guides are as old as gaming itself. If you're that weak willed that you can't stop yourself from looking at a guide, then stop gaming altogether.

You thought right! The reason every game has tutorials and guides shoved down your throat is because of the casual audience.

I'm glad Sonic Generations at least had the option to turn those off from the beginning.

Yep you're right. Never have I seen an industry where the consumers wish 2/3 of it to fail.

There are different types of guides. Yangire and I played some Super Robot Wars this recent weekend. It's fully Japanese, and a guide helped us understand what was going on and get a better feel of the combat system. Playing a Tactical RPG in Japanese is surprisingly easier than I would have thought.

I use it when I just can't for the life of me figure something out, or I need a quick tip on how to get past a certain segment of a game. It's no fun to die more than 20 times. After that, it's free-sailing from there.

people look at gaming as this separate entity that we can enhance or hurt by how we play them. The only thing that will kill gaming is a lack of cashflow. That's how industries work. On revenue. When there is none, it goes south. Most of business in any industry goes through peaks and valleys. There will eventually be a valley again. But it won't die. Guides don't hurt it, shooters don't, guided interactivity doesn't hurt it. People not buying games anymore will kill it. There are so many types of games for so many types of players out there. It really is a sign of strength for gaming. But, especially here, people focus on how they believe gaming is supposed to be, which can only come from their personal preference of how they like to play. Sounds like major close minded childishness to me.
