Digital Foundry's article: Is it finally time to upgrade your Core i5 2500K?

consoles have been released 2 years ago and most AAA games are already running on low to medium settings in sub 1080p resolutions @30fps or less and the main reason for that is the terrible CPU bottleneck both consoles have, but we constantly hear about the longevity of consoles and how on the other hand you will need to spend tousands of dollars every year to run modern games at 1080 on 60fps+ on your PC

so this article at Eurogamer quite destroys both myths at once, benchmarking the 5 yo i5-2500k (stock frequency or orverclocked) they managed to run some of the most demanding games above 60fps,

so even on PC ultra settings 60fps performance level, the money you invested 5 years ago still can get you the CPU performance you need,

another question i could make is: if i wanted console medium settings 30fps performance, how long the i5-2500k would still get me covered? 2020?

if you overclock it , i can see no reason why should upgrade

however, if you want to do vr , i think that pci 2.0 slot can be a problem, but if you can dish out 800$ you can dish out a whole lot more

i7 4790k user here and I thought that was outdated. That sucker cost me $330 which I paid a premium for because I was under the assumption that CPU mattered for gaming. It kinda does but it kinda doesn't.

i can agree that a 2nd gen intel cpu is still great for gaming. I have a 2600k and a 4770k, in gaming the performance is next to identical. And the fact is, i can overclock my 2600k a few hundred mhz higher then my 4770k which helps make up for the gap.

An i5 2nd gen i doubt will last as long as the 2nd gen i7s since its lacking the threads gained from hyperthreading... i've seen some newer games start to use more than 4 threads, but again with a high overclock im doubting all 4 threads on a 2500k i5 is being maxed out even on games now.

It makes u wonder why intel charges so much for their skylake cpus, theres nothing special about them. You are better off sticking with a 5th gen or below and using cheaper ddr3 memory. I've been looking to get a 5820k i7 6 thread cpu for a video compression pc and the price is almost the same as a 6600k which is inferior since its lacking the threads. Skylakes 6-8 core cpus will probably be a huge rip off also. I hope amd's next cpus will be at least near the performance to the intels.

2600k i7 is still more than good to go with oc and 2000+ oc'd ram, sure skylake i7+ddr4 is faster, but considering you need a new cpu+mobo+ram, I could get another 980ti for that price and guess which is a bigger improvement...

Go watch the DF episode on CPU performance, the new Skylake demolishes all.

No reason to upgrade. More than happy with my stock AMD 6300.

Are there that many CPU intensive games out there at the moment? No doubt newer CPUs will benefit you with a boost in frames (minor or not), but worth it to bother upgrading?

Bummer mine is 2500 , no "K" so i can't overclock *sighs* and my Ram is 1333mhz , i guess if i upgrade to an I7 and get a faster ram . i'll have 20fps boost. (Graphics card: 970) ....Damn then i should change the mobo as well !
