Year after year since Halo came out, we hear about the famed "Halo-killer". We've seen an utter explosion of FPS games this gen and last gen after Halo 2 came out. We hear how its overrated, how its nothing special, how it brought nothing new to the table. We even hear about how Metroid was changed to FPS perspective to "compete" with Halo.
I don't think it's possible to beat Halo, anymore. People can imitate, duplicate. Come up with their Killzones and Resistances and whatnot, but obviously this franchise is invincible. I just wonder if any new FPS could ever have the same type of impact.
Metroid...not so much. Half Life series... absolutely. For a good fps expeirence it's HL, Halo, Unreal. All well crafted and engaging, not to mention usually respresent the cream of the crop for game play/graphic/story balance (excluding the story bit for Unreal). As for Metroid, I 've never been a fan, can't get into the environments or the story but it does poll rather well.
The decision to change Metroid to FPS had NOTHING to do with Halo. They wanted to re-energize the franchise and a side-scroller wasn't going to cut it on a console in 2002. They decided to up the interactivity by making "you" Samus. Mission accomplished.:D

Well, Gears is probably the closest a game has gotten to being a Halo-Killer. I think it's certainly possible, but in terms of sales figures, it will be tough. Crysis will probably be better than Halo 3 in every way, but it's a guarantee it won't sell as well.

of course something can rise above halo, before halo was released there was no doubt people sayin "can (insert fps game) ever be beat" and people would be sayin no, but that is until halo was seen, this can of course happen again, we all find it hard to believe now because we havent seen such a game but it can come there is no reason why not, and in time that game will be surpassed, that is just how the industry is, forever growing .
having said that , halo will always be regarded as a masterpiece that all other fps will look up to
Isn't the question "Is it not possible to compete with the Halo franchise on console?" ? Where does it say fps? Even Fps for that matter, Isn't Half-life the most successful franchise even in consoles?

Halo is currently the most powerful franchise on consoles in any genre, just look at all the threads about it. It already has almost a million pre-orders.

Well, I'd give it to GTA, actually. But the influence of GTA isn't directed towards just one console anymore, so it's perhaps less evident.

I thought the first one was alright. The amount of hype I read about it afterwards (bought it for PC before I ever posted on forums) killed the enjoyment for me, because people pointing out how awesome it was last gen, every other thread made me think of its bad points, and there are more than enough. TBH I think the series was a one hit wonder thats headed downhill. Of course it's fanbase will keep it going for another three or so generations but you know.

Honestly, i can't stand the fact that there are som many people getting into the rts genre just because there is a strategy game with "Halo" slapped on the front of it. It pisses rts vets like me off, people who have been playing rts since the days of the first C&C and even before that (i actually started with Overlord for the nes). Play games cause you like them, not because they're Halo.

I'm getting into it because I have a burning passion for the Halo story, plus Halo was originally supposed to be an RTS, I'd love to see what they were planning with that. PLUS it's being done by Ensemble Studios.

Without reading everY reply, yes the halo franchise is the best fps series on consoles, but the best fps games will always be on the pc, personally all fps games i play are on the pc, console fps's fail in comparision.Â
MP3 is definately gonna kill halo. especially if it has multiplayer. once the wii shooters start to come out, i garentee at least 7 will be halo killers, MP3 leading th revolution.
halo is overrated, uninnovative, and takes no skill. imo. i had played halo at the most, 3 times before i went to my friends house, and his little brother had been sitting on the chouch playing halo for 2 weeks. i picked up a controller and kicked his ass 10-3.

Why adding something new to a game that is this good. It had new weapons and a new enemy, isn't that enough? I just hope Halo 3 doesn't have a cover system, I just want the gameplay to be just the same as its predecessors.
