It's already more than five years since the 360 came out and games like Crysis 2 are already pushing the current consoles to the limits.

We are also about to see the new Nintendo console and Epic showcased their new Unreal Engine.

Kinect may be a success but it's not aimed at core gamers.

And Battlefield 3 is confirmed to look and play a lot better on high-end PCs.

2015 at least, they will cash in on Kinect for a while, they are obviously copying the wii model.

Why is 720 always the proposed name. It's just awful and stupid "Oh well, 360+360=720 so it makes sense" Really bro? The next Playstation will be the PS6 by that logic. Anyway, as for the actually topic, I don't care. I don't see why we're singling the 360 out here though. It's not that different from the PS3 and Wii is far behind it. Personally, I don't intend to migrate to any next gen any time soon. I'm fine with my 360.

I think the 360 won't be relevant for core gamers by 2015 anymore. Even the mainstream will get bored of the same-looking and same-playing Call of Duty games imo.

Not coming out until 2013. Will probably be announced at E3 2012 or 2013.

I don't think core gamers will be the concern for MS, they are clearly going for the wii market.

I agree it's a stupid name but it's the most wide-spread.

Well the mainstream still buys their Halo games and such so a complete shift to the Wii market would imo be a bad decision. They already have Kinect.

I don't think so , there's still a lot that devs can do with the hardware. Xbox and ps3 should both stick with current hardware till atleast 2014/2015.

Man I'm still calling late 2012 at the earliest, late 2013 at the latest for next gen consoles. More specifically Nintendo in 2012, Sony and MS in 2013.

I don't believe this 2015 nonsense. Even if MS does choose to milk Kinect over the next few years, they will still have to bring something new to the table to remain relevant. They went through a lot to build up all this strength in the market and I highly doubt they are willing to stand by and watch it slip away.

As for Sony, Move is not exactly offering the console longer legs at this point. I believe they will see through the 10 year cycle as they said, but again, just like MS they must stay relevant. I'm sure Sony wants to be back on top, and holding off a few more years is not the way.

If for some whack ass reason Sony and MS do choose to launch that late then Nintendo will re-absorb all the 3rd party support they lost so many years ago and continue maintain market leadership.

They could announce it at E3 2012 and launch in December 2012 (repeat of 2005). If Microsoft start work on it now they could launch a new system before 2013.

I mean if they do launch in 2013 a whole system generation would have lasted 8 years! 8 years! that's CRAZY!

2014/2015 for the next-gen Xbox and PS4 sounds ridiculous. And the hardware is pretty much maxed. Read what CryTek said about Crysis 2.

Hardware is maxed. You watch, Crysis 2, Gears 3, UC3, RAGE etc they are as good as things will look. Devs have had 5 years to learn all the tricks and techniques of squeezing out good graphics from the consoles and things won't improve.

how is it ridiculous? Both systems seem to be pushing out better looking games every year. Not to mention, both psn and live can only grow more with adding new features via updates.

My point exactly. Crysis 2, Rage and Skyrim are pretty much the best current consoles will see. Perhaps only some PS3 exclusives may still look better due to the CPU advantage.

I do not want a new console for the next 3 years.

I think the new one should be out in jan 2014 ...coz the current consoles are awesome.

And plus PS3's engine is powerfull its just the game developers ain't making the games so its engine can endure super graphics and fps.

Oh yes, make games cut even more corners and struggle on over 6 year old hardware. I don't see how much more they can do, they certainly aren't made of magic so they won't produce great looking games forever, or else we would be stuck. We normally see a new console 5 years in, this gen is different. If they could do higher res, aa, af and more I would be impressed. You also have to take into the account of the following:

1: Physics 2: Destruction 3: Artifical Intellegence 4: Number of characters/enemies/players on screen at once 5: Size of video games 6: Load times 7: Animation 8: Audio Fidelity

If devs want more and/or better, then new consoles here we go.

This stuff really blows my mind about this forum how PS3 fans act like the 360 is done but yet the 360 beats the PS3 in ...well everythying. Some stuff the PS3 has over the PS3 -larger game library -more AAA games -more AA games -more A games -higher scoring games on XBL then on PSN -more games on XBL then on PSN -better online -more console sales -more million + selling games -highest selling exclusive -best FPS series ( Halo which was AAA every single time) -best TPS series ( Gears which was AAA every single time ) -best racing game ( Forza AAA every single time ) -most multiplat games are better on the 360 -most successful motion controller system of the two. Wii is clearly the more successful of the two -Pure motion control games the 360 games score better As far as graphics is just a fanboyish thing. Crysis 2 and Gears 3 are pure amazing looking for example. I think Gears 3 looks better then anything the PS3 has but I do not care to argue it since it is all opinion anyways. Unless a game has the same amount of enemies, level size, amount of objects on screen and so on it is impossible to argue. Anyone acting like the so-called graphic king is fact is a fanboy because like I said it is opinion. So I declare the graphics a tie.

The current consoles are way behind modern PC hardware. I don't see why this gen is so special that it would have to be on the market more than six years without a successor. The PS3 was also pretty much milked with Uncharted 2. UC3 doesn't look much better.

I'ts due time all manufacturers release something new. Ninty might get a head start, just like microsoft did. Maybe a 1 year difference between Nintendo(2012) & both MS & SONY(2013).

He has a point though. In order to bring games to a new level, consoles need better hardware. Certain genres require better hardware in order to improve. It's not just a matter of graphics.

You know what i wont get a new Xbox system untill i know for sure they are safe and dont brake. PS4 if its priced right and around $400 at launch ill get one righ away but if they try and pull the $600 dollar price tag on me again this time im waiting. I will build a new gaming rig next year for sure, my laptop is pretty beastly but i want a tower too.

current hardware is Maxed. the devs have learned virtually every trick in the book to squeeze out the best looking visuals. they know how to cut corners, they know how to hide/mask the technical limitations of the consoles.

Yes, they have been maxed for a long time but devs allways find new tricks. I also think Crysis 2 is the best looking console game so far but Gears 3 seem to look just as good but alot more polished.

Why when these coversations come up do people always point to MS supporting the Kinect as a roadblock for their next console? What, do you not think they wont develope their new system with Kinect connectivity in mind. Just because the Kinect is on 360 doesnt mean that it wont be on the new console as well.

As far as the TC's question, Id say we wont hear much of anyting on the next XBOX until this time next year. Id expect a console release in 2013. The 360 can survive another 2 years on a handful of exclusives and multiplats. OF course this is MS we are talking about, so anyhting could happen.

I think Microsoft learned their leason this gen. They wrote off Nintendo this gen and it bit them in the butt.. Microsoft went in this gen focused on destroying gen and they even said as much. I admit they pretty much did crush Sony this gen since sold more hardware, sold more software, bigger library, better games according to critics, better online, best selling exclusive, got over 50% more user base while Sony lost over 50% user base, and so on.

Trouble is Microsoft went to dethrone Sony and they did but focusing on Sony they let Nintendo run away with the sales

Crysis 2 is pushing the console to it's limits? Didn't they say that when Gears of War came out? Developers say that so they can HYPE Their games and nothing more. As long as the 360 is selling then I don't see why MS should annouce a new console, and I'm really in no hurry for them to do so.

2015 at the earliest.

This guy, with the huge Rig, speaks the truth. They don't want to lose their market position so they can't wait much longer. Interesting to see how they'll deal witn Wii2. Must be tempting to release hardware so powerful that they can shut nintendo out from the third party market again. Nintendo is in a tricky spot since they must speak first and then sony/ms can react to what they do. If nintendo goes to powerful wii2 may be too expensive at launch, especially for their current consumers. Lots of difficult decissions. Interesting to see how it plays out :)!

Why? I'd rather developers start focusing on gameplay rather than taking advantage of new graphics technology.

Yes absolutely. If you look at the average console generation span since the beginning of gaming, five years is the norm. I dont see why that would all of a sudden change. If you really think they are going to wait til 2015 you are foolish, especially considering Nintendo has practically anounced their next system.

I agree, but I don't think that will happen just because we hold on to a gen forever. Instead developers seem to focus on using more and more advanced tricks to squeeze a little extra out of the systems (Rocksteady being an exception :) ). They are also limited in terms of size of environments, number of things going on simultaniously etc. And that obv affect gameplay.

They could announce it at E3 2012 and launch in December 2012 (repeat of 2005). If Microsoft start work on it now they could launch a new system before 2013.

I mean if they do launch in 2013 a whole system generation would have lasted 8 years! 8 years! that's CRAZY!

Start work on it now? As in start developing it and launch it in a year and a half? These consoles take a bit more time than that to develop. If a major game can't be done so quickly, how could an entire console?

They'd have the advantage of mega $$$ in development, though i definately would't want a repeat of 2005 with a console that breaks almost half the time so 2 years time would be nicer.

[QUOTE="gam3r333"]

I do not want a new console for the next 3 years.

I think the new one should be out in jan 2014 ...coz the current consoles are awesome.

And plus PS3's engine is powerfull its just the game developers ain't making the games so its engine can endure super graphics and fps.

nameless12345

The current consoles are way behind modern PC hardware. I don't see why this gen is so special that it would have to be on the market more than six years without a successor. The PS3 was also pretty much milked with Uncharted 2. UC3 doesn't look much better.

This

you can see the graphics of console games have come to a standstill, the only way they can make their games look better is by making it more and more linear and the gfx are probably not going any further without doing that. I would rather trust developers rather than sony and MS who want to milk this generation for what it worth.

I really believe the PS3, and Xbox 360 could last for couple more years.. with the launch of Kinect, and Move I think Microsoft, and Sony aimed to lengthen the lifespan of it's consoles, but will be forced to do so much quicker if Nintendo announces a true successor to the Wii. E3 2011 will probably be one of the more surprising E3's in a few years... especially if Nintendo announces the successor, and Microsoft and Sony stand dumbfounded on stage.
