I'm finally playing MGRR and my goodness what an epic game this is.... It's so wacky and fun and fits perfectly with the crazy incoherent stories Kojima tells in the base games.... The gameplay is exquisite! Omg how fun! Parry, slide, slash and free cut like a sushi chef? Yep, sign me up. I'm really kind of blown away. I ignored this game when it released because it seemed so bizarre.... I wasn't sure what platinum games was doing in this universe. Now I get it. It's killer good fun and entirely repayable. Is it Metal gears most enjoyable showing made by platinum games??

It's a really good action game for sure. Solid B-tier, lots of replay value, decent sauce at higher level.

Think saying "best" is pretty silly, but I can definitely understand it being someones fav.

Personally, nah. Sure it's a good game in one of my favorite genres. But I got more burn out of MGS2, MGS3, and MGSV.

Been years since played it, but was def the one enjoyed the most since MS3.

I did not like Ground Zeroes at all. I can see the arguments mechanically it's superior and what not, but it just felt like an insanely hollow experience. And one of the few times found a game distasteful, and pretty far from Resetera. Kojima trying to be an edge-lord.

Pure action, no doubt. Platinum excel.

MGS In terms of the stealth-action, MGS3 followed by maybe 4 (sans cutscenes) 2, then 1.

No but definitely an excellent game nonetheless.

Only liked the cutscenes in that game. Gameplay and level design was trash.

I like it a lot now; definitely not the best but it's a great series so that's not a knock against it. I was a hater of the game at release just because I didn't like the sort of edgelord treatment of Raiden and I didn't like the lack of real cutting from the original demo. I've since come around to truly love the game for what it is. I think it can proudly sit in the large pantheon of great Metal Gear games.

Bit off topic, but yeah, didn't like what they did with Raiden after MGS2 at all. End of that game, makes you think he'll mature into a confident operative like Snake. Could have been way more interesting. Instead Kojima was like nah, too much work. People like Grayfox. People don't like Raiden. Raiden will be Grayfox 2.0... except as an emo sack of sadness.

In that sense, Rising was really the pay off lol. Put up with miserable Raiden in MGS4, but at least we got a good action game out of it in the end.

Its a good spin off. But OG MGS style is still superior.

While Metal Gear Rising: Revengence is a great action game from PlatinumGames, way before it became known as Revengence, this was the original idea for the game at the time when the game was gonna be used for Fox Engine under Kojima Productions when the original idea was all about Raiden cutting with no holdbacks:

In short, the Fox Engine had problems Kojima was dealing with, so he send the game to PlatinumGames instead and what we got was Revengence. Don't get me wrong, I really enjoy Metal Gear Rising: Revengence by PlatinumGames and they even got the cutting mechanics right from the Fox Engine prototype. Just wish Kojima had stick with his idea but overall, what's done is done, and glad everything worked out in the end. I own the game on PC.

Fun fact: I got the chance to play the demo of the game when I purchase Zone of the Enders HD Collection on Xbox 360 years ago.

Wasn't an engine problem or any tech limitation like that. It's a pretty basic action game, just about any engine would do. If anything, Fox Engine is more capable than what Platinum used.

Kojima straight up said his team didn't have the chops to develop that style of action game. So he approached Platinum with KPs already completed pre-production work and let them at it. It was a talent/experience issue and he made the right call.

Thanks Conan, I always assume the Fox Engine gave him hell at the time but never knew he didn't have the right style for the chops he wanted. Like I said, PlatinumGames did an excellent job in the end, I got spoiled by that prototype as I thought it looked good.

@davillain:

Yeah probably would have been a cool game whatever the case.

Highly unlikely they could have ever pulled together a melee action game as tight as what we got. But had they kept the focus on stealth action, based around Raidens abilities? And have the little bits of action play out similar to that prototype? Probably could've been a cool game in its own right.

Like no... Not at all.

Not even remotely close to the quality of MGS4, MGS2, MGS3, MGS1 and MGS5.

sure its great fun and excellet compared to other games, but its pretty much the worst Metal Gear.
