This game was one of the big PS3 showcase games at the time. And 13 years later, you still can't play it anywhere else 😄 Though it isn't my favorite MGS, it was certainly impressive tech wise. I don't think there was a 360 game that could match this game graphically. I also think it gave PlayStation an edge when they really needed it at the time. Gameplay wise, it was great, but even as an MGS fan, I admit, the fan service was on overdrive here. And tons, tons, tons of cutscenes. But still, I think this game does deserve it's place as one of the best PlayStation games of all time. And hopefully some day we'll get to play it on better hardware lol.

What say you, SW? Is Metal Gear Solid 4 still one of the best PlayStation games of all time?

Yes. And I want the whole series ported to modern consoles/PC so I can get rid of my PS3.

"Match graphically" this game looks like shit if you go back and play it today. The Last of Us and Uncharted 2/3 look much better, God of War 3 looks much better.

I’d rather play any MGS title over MGS4. Well, except for MGS Survive. Let’s say any other Kojima MGS game.

I wouldn’t necessarily argue against it myself. Love the franchise and also loved that game in particular. Definitely has some of the longest cutscenes around to the point of just being absolutely ridiculous but boy did I ever still love that crazy story and game.

I've not played it but that's because outside of the first on PS1, I haven't enjoyed the series. Safe to assume it's not even in my top 50 or even 100 Playstation games of all time list.

I'd have to say, from what I've heard, it's so far away from the kind of game I could enjoy that I stayed far away from it.

It sounds excessively annoying to play due to the sheer quantity of cutscenes.

I personally like Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots as it's the end of the series really (unless you count Metal Gear Rising as its a sequel from 4 but its really a spin-off) and MGS4 is the only game you can play on PS3...also on PS4 with PS Now. This game was really hype when it launch and not only that, there was a Special Edition PS3 console to go with that too. Hideo Kojima really work his ass off on the Blu-Ray tech when it was still brand new to the world, I remember Xbox 360 fans were upset they couldn't play it due to MS not going with Blu-Ray drive and Sony made it clear, if you want to play MGS4, buy PS3. As of matter in fact, Kojima really put an efforts into that game, never thought in my gaming life I would ride/control Metal Gear Rex and to thinking going against Ray in the process Ray was design to end all Metal Gears but that theory proves it wrong, REX was the superior machine all along. I am a sucker for nostalgia, and going back to Shadow Moses Island made me teary eyed, I can say it was the best MGS game I play back on PS3 when it launch. By the way, I didn't know it got a 10/10 on GS.

Edit: Drebin was entertaining and funny, so made the game more fun.

Now I'm interested. What is everyone's top 10 Playstation games of all time? Only rule is that it has to be a Playstation version of the game if it was multiplat. As I've been in the camp since the early days of the first, I'm going to be putting each series together as one.

  1. Uncharted series
  2. Resident Evil 0-5 and the Remakes
  3. Tomb Raider series
  4. Mass Effect series
  5. Dino Crisis 1 & 2
  6. Shenmue series
  7. Twisted Metal 1, 2 and Black
  8. Assassin's Creed 1-Syndicate
  9. Prince of Persia series
  10. Ghost of Tsushima

It was hard to narrow it down to 10.

The cutscene to gameplay ratio was the worst, and it would have been more tolerable if the writing didn't just drag on again and again throughout the game.

Even if Konami doesn't make games anymore, why don't they do like other Japanese publishers and just put their back catalogue on PC?

It'll bring in a ton of money and as Tecmo Koei has shown before: requires zero effort.

Metal Gear Solid 4 was one of the best games to come out for the PS3. It was that next level experience that was both fun and visually appealing enough to warrant the games price. The story was great, truly top notch and makes you want to play it again after you put it down. The environment in MGS4 is fabulous and you can tell they had a blast developing the game.

One of the things that makes the game such a great and enjoyable experience for me personally is how the game plays on the PS3, how smooth of an experience it is. It was one of those games where I could get where the console was headed and what all the tech and hardware's purpose was for games in the future.

It's still the only MGS game I haven't went back and revisited. I remember being very impressed, but outside of Snake chain-smoking during the lengthy install process I don't remember much else.

I played thru MSG 1 on the PSX and 2 via the collection on PS3 recently. Maybe I should play through 3 and 4 as well.

MGS1 still holds up incredibly well on original hardware. Kojima was way ahead of the game in terms of narrative, direction, and presentation back in the 90's.

I absolutely loved MGS4 but I hate the fact that it is still "prisoner" to the PS3. This is a game that deserves a remaster to newer consoles and PC, I don't want to have to dust off the PS3 to play it at (to today's standards) poor performance.

@goldenelementxl: The game hovered 30-60fps and sold a lot. If you didtn have the skill required to play the game, that's on you. It certainly is very playable.

The game would be called broken by today’s standards. Everyone on this board would laugh off its performance. The game spent plenty of time in the 20’s. (And some dips into the high teens…) That’s unacceptable. And that’s not even bringing into question the brain dead enemy AI. This game is easily one of the most overrated of all time

What Blu-Ray tech? It's a storage format and the PS3 drive was the sh*tiest of the bunch with read speeds less than that of DVDs.

Even better than The Last of Us, which is saying something:o

Not on the PC version. It probably has a quarter of the amount of games Gamepass has.

Never played it. I think the best PS games of all time, with the exception of HZD, have been the more funky and japanese-oriented titles. Stuff like Ico, SotC, TLG, FFX, Katamari Damacy, Gravity Rush, etc. These kind of games gave me something new from what i was experiencing on other platforms

@SolidGame_basic: 25-30FPS and 17-60FPS are very different. And BOTW doesn’t make you sit through a full length feature film at the end.

BOTW makes you walk through a barren world with nothing to do except solve boring puzzles to collect 900 nuts with no reward instead.

Most overrated game in history, but as long as sheep get to control Peter Pan I guess it's acceptable, right?
