Despite PS5 huge sales figures if we’re actually gaming capabilities and you factor in Gamepass Ultimate… man MS got one

I gotta say Xbox X|S looks to poised to run away with this thing if they can withstand Sony’s first party. Horizan and GOW will do some damage

I just went to play mass effect legendary on my ps4 but the internet is out... Game won't launch unless there's internet...

Isn't that what Microsoft wanted to do a few e3s ago?

Anyway, on topic, a healthy market split is good for gaming. Hardware sales are less compelling than services are becoming though.

The steam deck won't do better than the Xbox series consoles. It's appealing to a smaller market than those two consoles

I mean, I expect Sony to lead in sales, but they are still trying to play catch-up in features. Much of what MS is getting right this gen started back on XB1, with focus on BC and enhancing the BC games, Smart Delivery, Play Anywhere, dual entitlement, whereas Sony didn't bother to consider any of this until before the release of the PS5, and most of their half measures are sloppy at best.

Sony still has a larger stronger recognition for their first party, MS still has to wait for a steady flow of releases to come from all their acquisitions. But MS is really nailing it right now with Game Pass. Also, Sony does have better worldwide marketing and localization, something MS is playing catch-up on currently. Destin's YouTube channel sited IGN Japan who attributes the uptick of support in the region to that, better localization support. So, if it works, keep at it, as I have seen other articles saying other regions are still in need of localization support.

Nintendo shouldn't be in the same conversation as Sony and Microsoft. Their demographic doesn't play the same games as these true next gen systems with actual 3rd part support. Someone that occasionally picks up a Switch to play Animal Crossing isn't interested in playing Battlefield in 4K with 120 players online with ray tracing enabled. The same can be said about these next gen gamers not caring about the next Mario or Pokémon title.

The same can also be said about Steam Deck potential buyers. They don't care about playing Battlefield on medium settings with a controller. They simply want a way to portably play their Steam games while being away from their high end gaming PC.

Apples and oranges.

I was trying to tell people back in 2013 that both companies were pushing this online requirement type DRM. The Cows wouldn’t listen. It’s strange how it has come to fruition and nobody seems to care. But it sure caused a ruckus when the Xbox One was launching. Just goes to show you how important brand image and media coverage are. And how accepting PlayStation fans are.

What?!?! They are doing everything they can to keep consumers from buying software. Hell, they’ve probably caused a bump in pop tarts sales if anything. Theres like 30 million Game Pass subscribers that won’t have to buy a single game for the next 6 years…

Leading in sales? No. Leading in being the most consumer friendly, best online service, best versions of multiplats? Yes. This fall/winter is gonna be big for Xbox. We'll see what it does for sales.

When you have that much money, it's inconsequential how much they lose. Sony and Microsoft's losses are the consumer's gain.

No, Nintendo will continue to wipe the floor in hardware sales. In software/services, it's quite hard to say. MS is not playing by the rules Nintendo and Sony are but it's still suffice to say that both Sony and Nintendo will continue their lead in revenue/profits for years.

Absolutely. Its something not denyable. Sony didnot even attend E3 or any show and have nothing to show or release this year. and they only have 1 genre ie cinematic third person games.

Microsoft have variety. this fall they are releasing Halo and Age of empire 4. 2 vastly different games, vastly different genres.

and by next year Microsoft will blow sony out of water with Starfield, Redfall and other bethesda titles. its not even a contest.

Well, PC is always and will always be in the lead, but speaking consoles only that'd be Nintendo followed by Microsoft. Sony has done absolutely nothing to innovate this year and in fact has put in place policies hostile towards independent developers which are the primary innovators in gaming right now, effectively hindering innovation.

@robert_sparkes: 10M+ Hardware sales PS5 vs probably 26M+ Gamepass subs by now.

This is the whole point of Game pass. To bypass specific hardware sale limitations.

@dabear: Xbox 360 did not sell more than Ps3. It was close though. Despite having a year head start.

360 wouldn't have even been close to PS3 if not for the US market.

@NukleaWorfair: LoL. If the PS3 didn't have a 12:1 sales advantage in Japan, it would have been soundly defeated.

Why do we care about sales (traditionally)? Because more consoles sold = more 3rd part support.

In the markets that mattered for everything except JRPGs, the 360 was the market leader. That's why there were so many "PC360" games that skipped -SKIPPED - the PS3.

Also, the 360 sold a lot more software compared to the PS3 (go look up the attach rates). Game company's revenue and success is tied to software sold, not the consoles (which are sold at a loss).

So, I stick by my comment when I say "the 360 beat the PS3".

@___gamemaster__: I *think* that some people are saying the actual platform number for "Xbox" is gamepass subscriptions, not XSX or XSS unit sales.

I don't know if I agree with that, but it is an interesting argument.

Also not factoring in the fact that it took Sony until 2018 to "surpass" the 360 three years after Microsoft ended production of that console, and 5 years after the proper end of that generation.

They continued production for no other reason than to cheesily claim so, even if that unearned "vindication" had a gigantic asterisk next to it. And by a measly 500k units. A smaller gap than the 2 million gap Xbox outsold Gamecube by (and it even ended production before the Gamecube did, instead of continuing to sell for 5 years)

If you got your ass kicked during the game, but you stay in the stadium "scoring" long after the lights go out, everyone leaves, and the janitors are cleaning up, is that a "victory" anyone's proud of?

This one is on EA unfortunately. They do this on Steam ver too which my friend told me cannot boot unless got internet. Probably same with xbox edition. Weird DRM tactics.

No it wouldn't. Also the North American market made up 57% of Xbox 360 sales. The Japanese market made up only 11% of PS3 sales. There is no comparison.

Just NO.

The PS3 started outselling the Xbox 360 per year in 2010 (after PS3 price drop), and overtook Xbox 360 overall in 2013.

People are still playing PS3 multiplayer games online for free to this day.

The fact that PS3 had longer legs in the race is a win for them and especially the consumer.
