Define "modern gaming".
Knowing that you are a PC gamer give examples of what you consider , modern gaming.
More dumbed down, accessibility over quality? I would say its not what it once was.
Certain games in genres (CoD, World of Warcraft, League of Legends) dumb down genres and make every money grubbing company follow suit thinking they can claim some of that pie... resulting in less variety.... the MMO genre has become a stale joke.
Just like always some games are great and some are not. The biggest difference between now and what gaming used to be is that the games that are not typically sell better than the games that are. It has more to do with gaming becoming popular enough to justify mass marketing than anything else, though.
There are tons of incredible games released every year and you call modern gaming shit? Spoiled much?
My friend, having a "movie game" avatar, sadly, I can't take your opinion seriously on the matter.
Yes and no. Yes because there is just too many shooters out there. I was personally sick of them since 2006, although there has been a few decent one throughout the years. No, because there has been some fantastic games, in a sea of shitty games, over the years. I still think the ps1 era was the best era for gaming, at least for me.
It is if all you play is annual shooters and sports rehashes.
You have obviously not played many old shit games then?
My freind The Last Ninja didn't have DLC. Preorder DLC. Gamestop exclusive dlc. gamespot Or IGN making bullshity youtuber videos attempting to promote it under the guise of journalism. I lived in a happy age. A better time.

So, please name some "non-shit games" in your opinion so we can see what you think is good/great. You never did answer my original question either.
There's as much great content for gamers content as ever, but recent trends towards 99 cent throwaway gaming experiences, and facebook games with profit-oriented micro transactions strikes me as lousy.
When I game I seek quality experiences that are worth the time I put into them and do feel threatened by this change in focus.
Nah.
I mean I don't enjoy gaming nearly as much as I used to and my interest has been on a steady decline since the start of last gen. I don't feel the high notes are nearly as high as they used to be either, but as a whole I think gaming is only getting better and better if that makes any sense.
Imo gens 4 through 6 were the sweet spot, but that's more a reflection of my taste in gaming and what I enjoy about the medium than anything else. Modern gaming is great, just a lot of it (especially the "AAA" stuff) is not for me.

I hear you, bro. I kind of feel the same way. Sometimes when I get bored of the modern AAA stuff, I go back to playing Gen 4-6 stuff (mainly using PC emulators).
I agree DLC is shit, but you can offset that by buying the game when it's cheaper. A lot of games are better then they used to be (not all) and are getting better every gen. A lot of games are being made now that were impossible 10-15 years ago, especially open world sandbox games.
I personally didn't like "The Last Ninja" well the Amiga version anyway, think I had the 2nd one. I had no idea what was going on either :-D.
NO.
Why? Because as PC gamer, I get the option of "modern gaming" (Via few exclusives and the best version of most multiplats), as well as "old-school gaming" reborns such as new isometric RPGs, actual competitive and fast paced shooters, non casualized Sims, no casualized MMOs ( sadly somewhat rare), indy games that ooze classic gaming, and good old RTS/Moba.
No, just console gaming is. But the good news is that all the big 3 are going down.
Unfortunately there is more truth than you know in this statement.
Last console gen was just shameful. AAA Games cost so much to make now that they have to make them for the LCD. I haven't been able to defend Japanese devs for years.
*sigh*
I want to be a PC gamer again.
@uninspiredcup: So.... you only like non-story games like Tetris or little story like Warcraft? Anything with an engaging story though must be shit to you for whatever reason?
Right... That makes sense. /sarcasim
Oh, my friend, I like story games. I just don't like 8 hour CGI movies with gameplay tacked on. Uncharted is a prime example of modern gaming. You fellows who praise it (the younger people) would rather just have cool flashy things on the screen with fake sentiment and emotion than have some form of interactive medium like the good old better days.
I feel it is, which is why I am not ready to purchase a PlayStation 4 and I am simply observing. I will be keeping an eye out for every gem I can find, that will most likely be over looked by the majority.
How many people who voted yes are clouded by nostalgia?
Modern gaming is the best gaming has ever been. Never have we had so many choices of platforms and games to play on them.
Sounds like you need to play the right games
@uninspiredcup: I'm 32 and have been gaming for 27 years. Uncharted is my favorite series because the game is fun to play. I repeat... fun to play... as in... interact.
I also have Hitman. It was ok.
I played a indie video game on pc and I played as a badger in a forest looking after cubs. It wasn't good. Even though it wasn't good, it tried. It at least had an ounce of creativity (like old games). All Uncharted does it rip off Indiana Jones. All Last of Us does it rip off "The road". Naughty Dog can't even create original creative characters (like Sonic The Tails) they have to ripoff Helen Mirron and that girl from Xmen 3. It's fucking lazyness.
Of course not. Has this gen been the best? No, but there have been plenty of awesome games of this generation, and I still have plenty left to play. If I really try to exhaust both the Wii and PS3's library, I won't have to buy a Wii-U or whatever next gen console (handheld or otherwise) for years.
I still think last gen (well, last, last gen at this point, really) was the best. PS2 and GameCube gave me so many amazing games to play.
Naturally with the rise of online gaming and the death of local multiplayer, its quite easy to see some people thinking this is a good thing now that they don't have drive all the way to a friends house to slay zombies together. Theres also the added bonus of not wearing pants (Real men hate pants).

So whether a game is "trying" or not is more important to you than its quality? That's idiotic.
