And the people who supported Gamecube was all a big mistake?

How dare they?! I am outraged! How dare the company that is #1 for sales AND the only company making money, have a positive opinion about themselves! Don't they know? Only MS is allowed to pat themselves on the back constantly without being criticised!
OUTRAGEOUS!
Yes, and it's starting to piss me off. They're not a games company anymore IMO. The last few weeks I was starting to warm to them, given they were starting to come out with some good hardcore games. But now I've gone right back.death1505921
As a wise man once said, "You are not your F***ing khakis."
The fact that you are willing to overlook "good hardcore games" because of your perception of the company is the single most ridiculous act of braindead consumerism I have ever seen. You sir, are no gamer. You are acting like nothing more than a consumer who thinks the things they buy somehow represent who they are as a person.

Ever watch the TV series Rome? Julius Caesar there says, "It's only hubris if I fail."
In this case, with Nintendo, it's only cockiness if they're wrong. They're not, otherwise the Wii and DS would never have been as successful as they have been. The fact that the mere promise of something different could drive so many sales pretty much proves that there is a huge audience out there who were bored or simply just fed up with gaming as it had become. There's no way that pure non-gamers could make up such a large fraction of the Wii/DS's userbases.
"A major insight that Nintendo had early on was that they saw that gamers were getting bored, even though they didn't know it yet," Kaplan told Advertising Age, which named Nintendo Marketer of the Year for its success in attracting a wider consumer demographic to gaming.Next-Gen
When did Nintendo become Sony? That's pretty damn condescending. "Even though they didn't even know it yet." Please . The Xbox and PS2 were huge last generation. They made gaming even more popular and accessible than it used to be. Their big idea to relieve "gamer boredom" was to create a console based on motion-sensing, with titles like Cooking Mama: Cook Off? Awesome.

I know, I would much rather play traditional games like Big Rigs. Why shouldn't they be cocky when they're killing MS/Sony?darkmario123
So why all the hate on Sony when they murdered the competition? I mean you're saying it's alright as long as you're winning.
They made the Wii to be a new sort of gaming console, but...
...that exaggeration is quite laughable.

Because even though Sony did murder the competition, they did so IN SPITE of their claims about the PS2.

The difference is that Perrin's telling the truth, maybe?
Like I said, the Wii AND the DS could not both have had the success they have right now if all they had was marketing and a simple gimmick. Apart from non-gamers, there are obviously also gamers who simply got fed up with the state of gaming and its reliance on pop culture machismo and edginess with all the big guns, big swords, and big cars.
Video games = action movies, and we all know what happened to THOSE at the end of the 1990s.
To put it in simple terms: Gaming has gone downhill since the 4th generation.EponiqueI don't doubt that's what you believe.
It's Nintendo consoles that have gone downhill.
The Wii isn't a new type of console. There was a system that had motion controls much like the Wii when the PS2 was out, its not innovative in any way, its just better advertised than that was (which is proven by the fact I can't remember the name of it right now). They made the Wii to be a new sort of gaming console, but...

Actually, I don't really mind these types of comments, to be honest. They can be amusing. Smack-talk amongst high-ranking executives is amusing. Nintendo and Microsoft both don't like Sony. :P
"I'd love to dig up some old Phil Harrison comments and say 'hang on a second - six months ago when we launched our controller you said one thing, and now why are you doing this?'" said Yarnton. "I don't know what their decision making process is but I think if you look back, any innovation that has come in gameplay has come from us."
"Tell me why you would buy a $600 PS3?" asked Microsoft's Peter Moore. "People are going to buy two (machines.) They're going to buy an Xbox and they're going to buy a Wii ... for the price of one PS3."
Harrison's "I know you are but what am I" response: "I think Peter Moore is exactly right. I think Nintendo will be the second system consumers purchase after PlayStation 3."
"We have built up a certain brand equity over time since the launch of PlayStation in 1995 and PS2 in 2000," said Reeves, "that the first five million are going to buy it, whatever it is, even if it didn't have games."
That last quote is priceless.
*now*? when haven't they been?Panzer_Zwei
I still like Nintendo, but I found a shocking revelation some time ago. I wasn't even alive during this time, so I never knew this.

Oh, so is that why the 360 is killing Nintendo in software sales?
I said the PROMISE of something new and different. I didn't say Nintendo's fulfilled that promise yet in terms of software for the Wii, but the fact tha the promise alone has spurred so many people to buy so early into what is essentially an untested machine shows that what Perrin said at least has some grounding in truth. Read my first post on this thread.

Yeah, that is a good point. Any rebuttals?
I already responded. Look up one post from yours.
Does anyone else find it ironic that Nintendo touts their innnovation, yet the most innovative thing so far this generation came not from waving your arm in bizzare motions, but from a group of school students? Narbacular drop, the inspiration for portal, is far more innovative than anything the wii has yet to put out. Gamers were bored? Nintendo cured them of this boredom through their divine innovation I take it? Mabye Nintendo should keep quite for now, until they actually make something on par with that of a group of friends senior game design project.agentfred
You said it yourself: It's a senior game design project, not a multimillion dollar investment. Holy hell, non-sequitur much?

Yes, that pretty much what hindered the Master System performance and Turbografx's western release date, since third party couldn't make games for them even if they wanted to.But Nintendo has always been cocky and arrogant, not only when they're winning. I remember reading that once someone asked them why should third party make games for them.(since they charged a higher % than Sony and their system wasn't performing as good) to which they replied simply because they're Nintendo.

Huh? My point remains valid. True innovation doesn't come from changing your control scheme, it comes from changing the way we actually play games. Nintendo's mainstay argument this generation is that they're "innovative", yet they've failed to provide real innovation thats useful to gamers.

There was far more to the SNES-CD story than you imply. But yeah, it still fell down to Nintendo's cocky stupidity at the time.
