Poll Is No Man Sky a legitimately good game? (28 votes)

Ye 54%
Ye (it was good to begin with) 18%
No, still big pile of pish 32%
No Caption Provided

Hello, this game launched to an incredibly divisive reception, being held up as a prime example of false marketing and the dangers of media hype, with Sean Murray becoming something of an internet effigy of false Rain man.

Now, long after release, it appears to have softened into a now positive reception, at least going by the expert opinions on Steam.

I'd like you're opinion though, was this game bad to begin with? And if not what was the turn around? Were people too hard on it to begin with? And if not, some other shitty questions?

It's fun with VR. Seems daunting with all that you can build. Stopped playing it.

It is one of my favorite game of all time. Currently there is so much to see and do it is ridiculous. I have build amazing bases on multiple planets, I have an amazing capital ship that has several ships that I send on missions with it, the space anomaly has become amazing with great community events happening all the time, and now you can even get a LIVING SHIP! This game updates constantly, and has become a truly great game.

NMS currently has 88% positive reviews on steam in the past 30 days with over 2600 in that time. It has averaged over 80% positive reviews for over 12 months in a row. That is what I call a MASSIVE turn around. It is truly impressive.

For context when it first came out on Steam it has a 17% overall positive review score and is now sitting at 58% overall. Lesser Devs would have just given up with 17% positive, but Hello games managed to make on of the greatest games (IMO mind you) and I could not be more proud of them.

They turned it into every crafting game ever made, which is about the only thing they could've done. I'm not applauding these guys though.

If you are planning on getting on Steam, wait for it to go on sale for 50% off. (this happens VERY frequently)

Apparently, it's good ... to be fair, since the billion patches, i haven't heard many people complaining about the game, people seems to really like it ... might get it in the near future as well.

I played the updated version (never played the launch version) and it was a lot of fun.

Just not the type of game I would play. The crafting/resource gathering got a bit mindnumbing for me.

Why would I gather resources myself, when I can instruct others to do so for me? (i.e. play an RTS instead)

Ironically enough, it ended up being one of the better games ever.

It's incredibly unique in it's execution of a space sim, if you can even call it that, because it incorporates a lot of other genres into it.

The presentation is beautiful, reminds me of those hand-drawn sci-fi illustrations from the old magazines I used to read.

They have added on so so so so so much more content, and are still adding on new stuff (see: living ships update).

But! The game is not for everyone. It's not for simpletons or people that need their hand held or to be told what to do. It is, for the most part, a very open-ended game. It essentially goes "Here is what you can do, now go do it. Or don't. We don't care, just have fun" and not everyone can deal with that.

TL;DR: NMS is as fun as you want it to be.

*it's really fun to play under the influence of....stuff. It can be a pretty trippy game.

It's still a pile of garbage.

I want to like the game and I kept trying to like it every time there was a new update that supposedly made it worth playing now but every time I did jump back in after those updates I'm still met with the same shallow and repetitive game of refueling and recharging every 2 minutes on planets that look the same with creatures on them that look the same and have really annoying sound effects that all sound the same. After the tutorial you've done pretty much everything there is to do in the game.

I haven't bothered to try the latest update. I might try it, but I doubt I will this time.

Since all those updates, it's probably ok.

Looks boring to me though, so I'll never find out. I always get bored very quickly when there's material gathering and crafting involved. Tried playing Subnautica, and liked it at first, but that too got boring quickly. Constant management is more annoying than fun to me.

Yes. It's like Minecraft in many ways - it's not a AAA story driven blockbuster yaddayadda experience; so if that's what you require then you won't like it. But it is absolutely what it is intended to be - which takes the subjective taste element out of the assessment

It was always a great game to me, but it depends. For fans of slow paced exploration it's a masterpiece, but for those who want fast paced action it will always be a boring game.

Same. I played at a daily basis for years, and now still jump to it once in a while. It's one of those games i'll never uninstall.

Building a suborbital base, standing on the deck and looking through the clouds at the world below. Planting an egg and growing a psychedelic glowing creature that I can climb inside of and fly through the cosmos. Jumping into a blackhole and ending up in a vast purple cloud, descending through a pinkish atmosphere into a planet where hexagonally structured creatures live that, when near, silently chase visitors across the landscape. Exploring the bottom of a blood-red sea in a forgotten corner of the universe, weaving in and out of clouds of luminescent creatures; finding a suitable place and digging out an underwater system of caves that connect to an interlocking system of glass tunnels, which combine to form a submerged palace so large you can get lost in it. And on, and on, and on, and on.....I haven't even scratched the surface of all there is to do in this wondrous game.

And all of it in VR. Needless to say, it's a freakin' amazing experience.

Is it a game you enjoy and play? Then its a good game. I continuously wonder how your posts could possibly get more vacuous, trolling, and stupid, but then you manage to lower the bar. Congrats.

I own both PS4/PC versions and playing NMS in PSVR really makes the game more enjoyable. If you have VR, I recommend you play it in PSVR.

Played the launch ver, got some 50 hours but never reached the center. I came back each update and it certainly improved a lot of things. Dont remember which one but the 3rd person update was the best one. I think NMS is probably my 2nd or 3rd longest game installed on my system behind Bloodborne of course.

Yes... game was fun at launch and got a lot better since.

It really seems that any game that doesnt have a copious amount of dialogue and story gets trashed by gamers online. Any game that focuses on progression through endless loops of gameplay gets maligned by the online community, and written off as shallow or pointless.

I tend to disagree with this line of thinking, and typically prefer these types of games.

It's great now, but before the updates it had issues. I don't think it was ever terrible- For me, it was a game I played when I just wanted to chill out, now it actually has some decent gameplay elements. I highly recommend it at a discount.

I came back to it after some major updates (maybe 6-8 months ago? I can't remember).

it certainly was improved but I still found it pretty boring.

only survival/crafting/exploration type game i've really enjoyed is Subnautica.

I played it at launch and even with update no desire to return, but maybe will reconsider if it comes to GamePass. Playing Everspace right now, less sim and more space arcade style gameplay, liking that more myself. More combat, less exploration, some amusing story bits and quests, overall less of a time investment and good for shorter bursts of gameplay.

It's not the same game that was released. So to say it is now a good or bad game doesn't make sense.

That's me on these survival crafting games. I've done it so much in games that it's become a mundane task and I just loathe doing it now.

@DragonfireXZ95: Yeah it's fine in say The Last of Us or Far Cry, where the majority of things you do isn't the resource gathering or crafting, it's just a means to an end.

That's my problem with getting back into it. I haven't played since just after VR launched, and I'm procrastinating about setting up a proper VR control scheme with chords and such.

But damn, so much has been added since I played, I'd feel like a n00b after almost 100 hours already.

Launch version was vastly superior.

The updates made the game worse and unplayable for me. Sold my copy.

The launch version was a simple and fun. It was easy to create fuel and farm stuff.

Now it’s a huge pain in the butt. They included the entire periodic table. The old version only needed like oxygen and something else to get going.

New version requires 5 different elements to create 1 thing. It just sucks now.

They made it much harder to do anything in the game and I hate it.

I still like the game, but I strongly agree. I actually liked it more at launch.

Metascore is 6.1 and user score 3.1 so it seems that the game is bad.
