I hear many people point out that XBL Gold is a scam simply because the PC offers the same features for free

But the problem is this is never a criticism of PS+

PSN still does not have as many features as XBL Gold or the PC even after dropping $50 a year for it, but it does offer a coupon book, and this is where the problem arises.

It seems to me this coupon book is the only redeeming value of PS+, and yet here is a screenshot of a small sample of what I'm currently being offered on the PC while paying $0

yPOQg.jpg

Does this seem wrong to anybody that Steam is offering 106 games and pieces of dlc at discounted prices, and this comes at no extra charge while also offering free online infrastructure for all Valve games (plus many 3rd party), cloud saving, voice chat, messaging, automatic updates and background updating, and a handful of other features?

I mean we all know Sony milks, but this seems to be a whole new level of greed. Tricking people into paying them money, so that they can get coupons, and pay them more money

Nah, it isn't a scam. If people are willing to pay for it and they offer what they advertised then it isn't.

Xbox Live is a scam because you are paying £40 to play online. PSN and Steam offers this for nothing.

The biggest feature is the games PSN+ gives you for no additional charge. The discounts are better than XBLA, but when you throw Steam in there the discounts are puny. However the games you get for that $50 is still a really good deal on it's own accord. The only worthwhile upgraded "feature" it gives you is cloud saving, which I admit is a pretty cool feature but no way I would pay for that on it's own and yeah you do also get that with Steam for free. But do you get that on XBLA? We will see what this "big announcement" for PSN+ is at E3 as well. Could at least be another big value added that puts it way ahead of XBLA gold.

In the end though, PSN+ is an undeniable value. I don't see how you can say they are "tricking" people into paying, when they actually give content for the money. Whereas Microsoft charges you just to use Netflix and use your own bandwidth play online games. Stuff you get on literally EVERY other platform for free. You get no content at all. That's borderline retarded. It's pretty obvious, in terms of value:

I've had Gold for a while now and Microsoft has not offered me the "rental" of a single game. They've not offered much if anything in the ways of discounts either.

On the other hand, PS+ allows me to play new games every month without extra fees, and real discounts on great games. I just got ModNation Racers for $15.

PS+ is a lot better deal than Gold is.

... and I don't know what all these extra Gold features are you're talking about.

I see what your trying to say but considering PSN is a closed platform service, getting game deals is actually pretty sweet.

Nope. The reason being, is once you purchase a game with online features, you can use it it on the psn without additional cost. With Live, you have to pay an additional fee to unlock the multiplayer achievement of the game you already purchased. Psn+ simply offers content and discounts. Nothing that needs additional costs to play your game.

It isn't anymore of a scam then having to pay just to get online on a 360. Personally I love PS+, I just wish they'd get discounts for Vita stuff already.

I wouldn't say it's a scam but one thing that bothers me about it is it's Cloud save feature. I have some saves on there from when I did have PS+. I haven't had it for a couple months now and the only way I can access that saves is if I sign up again. My Demons Souls character which has over 300 hours on it is trapped on there and I'll probably never pay for PS+ just to get access again

If they locked all the discounts behind that and didn't offer games (the meat of the service) , then it would be a scam. But they don't do that. I come across good deals all the time as a non-PS+ user. If I need better deals or more deals (plus the games of course-the meat of the service) , then I'd sign up for it. But luckily , I'm not forced into paying.

Some games do not allow you to copy your saves onto a USB Drive. If you go to the game in your saved data utility some will say "copying prohibited" and makes you unable to transfer the save off your PS3. When I had PS+, I was able to put my Demons Souls save onto the Cloud save feature I case anything happened to my PS3. Since then, that PS3 broke and I bought a new one. I couldn't swap HDDs because they are different PS3 models so I went to retrieve the save from the Cloud feature. My PS+ subscription expired and now all the saves I have on there are locked unless I pay for Ps+ again

It may be possible to back them up to an external hard drive by using Backup Utility. I think it should work... Worth a try.

Guess I'll have to own this once again. Okay here we go....

There is only ONE feature XBL has that PSN does not, that is cross game chat. That is the ONLY difference in features, well that except for one cahrges $60 a year, and the other is FREE. And I think anyone with a brain knows that FREE >>> Cross game chat at $60 a year.

Here you can see for yourself:

Xbox Live features?

PSNFeatures

Please note that some services are only available in certan regions. Now with that part of your argument destroyed let's move onto PS PLus.

PS Plus is an annual subscription that is cheaper than XBL, it is an option and provides a variety of different services. These inlcude things like "free" games (really at no additional cost), massive discounts (you keep these even if sub runs out), beta access, cloud storage, free themes, avatars, and some other things.

PlayStation Plus Features

While it is true that you don't get to keep some of your "free" games, lemmings cannot bash this as XBL is the same thing in that regard. XBL is just a rental service with cross game chat, you don't really own Halo or COD or any of your other games, you only own a portion and MS owns the rest.

The number of games you get varies each month, but it's usally between 5-7 games. Each of which cost anywhere between $5?-$20, though again this varies. You also get discounts on some games that can go up to 50%-75% off.

So take all that into account, you do the math. My Plus subscription paid it'self off within just one month, and that was just for ONE MONTH! Imagine how much I will save through out the REST OF THE YEAR! How many more "free" games I will get? I'll be well in the hundreds! And some of these games are awesome (though admittedly some are better than others, there are a couple bad ones now and then).

If you are going to pay for a subscription, PS Plus destroys XBL Gold Fee in every single way. It's cheaper and saves you a TON of money. It does more than just gives you cross game chat and online play. There is no way around this, you would be an idiot to argue that XBL is a better value than PS Plus.

What you should be doing is asking MS to make Gold just like PS Plus, that way you would be getting REAL value and more bang for your buck. But alas your trying to justify your purchase so your afraid to ask questions. What MS does, you follow.

Even @ a discount of $35 for a year, I feel like Gold is a total waste of money and I regret getting it just so I could play Gears 3 and Trials Evolution online every now and then.

Raymundo_Manuel

The one where you're paying $50 to access the deal.

But you keep braid, you don't lose it when Plus runs out. Braid being for only $3.50 on Plus is just ONE game, there are plenty of other games that have similar discounts. If you buy those games with a Plus subscription it pays it'self off.

I think it's well worth the money, it pays for it'self. However it is not for everyone, someone who doesn't like to download very much probably wouldn't get much out of a Plus subscription. But man let me tell you, there are some killer deals on PS Plus that you simply cannot resist.

They can rival Steam deals sometimes, that's how good they are. My Plus subscription paid it'self off within the first month. I'm very happy with it. Each month I look forward to more games and discounts! What do you look forward to each month with XBL?

You're paying money so that Sony gives you discounts.

I pay no money, and get discounts anyways.

I would try that but the original save is on a PS3 that is broken and no longer in my possession. I only have the save that I put on the Cloud and it's just saddening that I'm losing hundreds of hours of gameplay because of it. Soy should just give the Cloud save feature to everyone. They only allow you like 50MB of storage anyway

You're paying money so that Sony gives you discounts.

I pay no money, and get discounts anyways.

Not really, the Plus discounts destroy the few XBL discounts big time. Look dude there is no way around this, PS Plus is a better value than XBL Gold. Anyone who looks at both services will tell you that.

Do you want me to show you how much money I saved with Plus? But be warned, you might not like what you see.

People shouldn't bother responding to his threads. He's a 360 fanboy trying to justify his purchase so that he can sleep better.

GamerwillzPS

and yet he can't even compare PSN+ to XBLA Gold, he's got to try and use Steam.

The one where you're paying $50 to access the deal.

Raymundo_Manuel

But you keep braid, you don't lose it when Plus runs out. Braid being for only $3.50 on Plus is just ONE game, there are plenty of other games that have similar discounts. If you buy those games with a Plus subscription it pays it'self off.

Regular PSN gives discounts too, and regular PSN gets to play online, watch Netflix, Vudu, Amazon Prime, etc. XBOX blocks that unless you are a gold member. Why? When you subscribe to XBLA you are paying just to get back all that stuff that you actually are already paying for elsewhere, but Microsoft locks it out. What CONTENT does Microsoft give you for that $50? Nothing? So what you are paying for? You are paying for a fluffed up service that pickybacks on your existing internet.

XBOX Live is like people that kept paying for AOL subscription after they had broadband. I think AOL even tried to come out with something called "AOL broadband", but you actually had to have a separate ISP and then keep handing over that check to AOL anyway. The excuse was for the "social features" and to make the internet better. "But...But all my friends are on AOL":. Totally unnecessary, I don't care if it's $5 a year or $50. It's just stupid. That's actually the argument I see people make on here "my friends are on XBOX Live". Believe me, XBOX Live will have the same ending as AOL if Microsoft keeps locking out piggybacked features you already pay for separately, instead of actually creating real content and value. There is no such thing as a free lunch, and useless services will not continue to earn revenues as people wake up it will shed subscribers.

Yah, you'd think with a huge picture of Steam deals in the OP that this was a pro-Xbox thread all along

If all PS+ gives is a coupon book like you said then I would agree.

However it isn't.

No one said PS+ is better than steam but PSN is giving you a premier membership choice and that happens everywhere in the world in golf clubs, sport clubs...etc people with premier membership get extra stuff its not a scam its a business model.
