Playing Uncharted 1 and 2 I swear I've never seen anything so bright or vibrant in a 360 game before, it was almost as if it was utilizing my TV in ways I hadn't seen, like Blu-Ray itself. Is that a result of the tech or the disc itself? Either way, wow.

its just a result of the game not tech or disc. the 360 has vibrant colors go play viva pianata, Lost planet, resident evil 5, halo 3 all have vibrant colors when vibrant colors are called for.

It has nothing to with the hardware. It's due to their artistic choices, and the way they did HDR tone mapping. The most common HDR technique can give you a somewhat brown-ish, washed-out look.

And here I thought the PS3's color palette was as limited as the TG-16's. Kidding. Seriously, both the PS3 and 360 render in-game stuff to the RGB color space. This is true of just about any modern graphics chip. Attempting to render to the extended-gamut color spaces specified in newer HDMI specs is just too demanding. Extended gamut is mostly limited to photography, videography, and film.

Another uselless think that has nothing to do with hardware capabilities for fanboys to fight for. As for color is artistic direction from the developer that depends to So unlees we are talking 15- 20 years ago when there whrere stuff like 256 colors , 8bit or 16bi color palette this has nothing to do with hardware capabilities

Is there a reason you're telling me something I already know? Did you see me defending the 360 and assume I was putting down the 360? At no point did I say the 360 did better colour than the PS3, that's stupid. Reading comprehension FTW

Any game with a decent renderer will encode to pseudo-sRGB instead of linear RGB. This provides enough precision for the displayable range that TV's support, but lower-end sets will still show a lot of quantization just because they're so crappy.

They can both produce the same amount of colors. Just that the PS3 is naturally brighter, while the 360 is dimmer.

The PS3'sx.v.Color features (Super White in the video menu) are based on pre-encoded video, and don't really affect games. There's the HDMI full range (if your TV uses full range as well), but MS patched that into the 360. All in all, they're dead even for games.

Okay, so it's sRGB (8 bit/channel), which is somewhat extended gamut. Still, it's a standard and supported by both consoles (not to mention most modern chipsets). The topic assumes the PS3 can render to one of HDMI's newer extended-gamut colorspaces like xvYCC and sRGB beyond 8 bits per channel.

If you seriously believe that and are not trying to make a joke, i will show you 40 or 50 comparison screen shots that suggest the exact opposite. PS3 is slightly dimmer and slightly blurrier in a lot of multiplats

It's all developer choice, really. Viva Pinata is outrageously colorful on the 360, while Killzone 2 has a very muted palette on PS3.

mostly developer choice

(Kameo - 2005)

the only tech part of it would be in how the console is hooked up to your tv

How vibrant? You know the PS3 cannot render 3D to anything stronger than sRGB 8-bit? Which is the same limit the 360 has? So with identical color gamuts, how can the PS3 render anything more vibrant?
