after playing it for the first time ive come to realize that no other horror title is as tense, fucked up, and enthralling as this game. Kojima really has something special here and it would be great if he teamed up with Sony to bring us another experience like PT!

There's some truth to this unfortunately.

Why does he have to team up with Sony?

Yeah, probably. Unlike so many recent horror games, it actually uses its setting and atmosphere instead of cheap jump scares. I loved it, although Silent Hill 3 and Cry of Fear are still my two favorites.

  • Alien Isolation
  • The Evil Within
  • Outlast
  • Soma
  • Dying Light
  • Fatal Frame V
  • Metro Redux

I mean, I'd take any of that before some teaser demo that leads to a cancelled game.

P.T. is so scary that it veers towards being unplayable for me. There are like three jump scares total but that's absolutely not what's scary; the scare comes from the atmosphere, the sound design, the random nature of the game, the inability to know for sure what's around the corner.

SOMA was a damned good game, but it wasn't as good of a *HORROR* game as P.T.

I'd rank SOMA as being better overall since it, ya know... had a plot [and a very good one at that], but P.T. nails the horror elements down more tightly. SOMA fucks with your head in more subtle ways.

Oh crap just did some research on this, how can I get this game without buying a $1,000 ps4 on eBay with the game installed that no longer exists on PSN for download?

You can't. You gotta pony up that $1000

seriously, Pt had the most foreboding hallways I'd ever seen. It's a shame Fox engine is just going to go to waste now, that is unless Konami get's their head out of their ass.

P.T. is scary, but the whole it was going to be a sequel to Silent Hill thing always rubbed me the wrong way, a series built on psychological horror being made by a game who lol get real, even PT was a great example of pacing, build up, and proper use of jump scare, and it's great it, but let's not front it was going to have a Del Torro or a Kojima story. Not exactly a good thing.

Otherwise it's not much of a game, it is pretty much a demo, scariest thing gaming has to offer maybe, but I wouldn't put it over what I played of Alien Isolation, much less my expectations for Soma considering how good frictional games is in this department.

Nah not the best, but if they were to keep up that pace for 6+ hours it probably would have been. Too bad that probably won't happen.

Honestly can't think of any really scary games. I guess Amnesia had its moments. But it didn't take long until it started becoming just sounds (irritating sounds at that after awhile) to me and I was watching monsters walk by me. Got to the point where I picked unwinnable fights just for giggles.

I'm really enjoying The Evil Within at the moment, and can't wait to play SOMA.

I really did not understand or get PT.

@R4gn4r0k: Wouldn't call TEW really all that scary, but it was a good game to me. The only "scary" parts to me were The Keeper part (sort of not really) and the Ruvik mansion part, and the latter was a different kind of fear.

SOMA looked a little bit more moody. Doesn't seem scary but has an unsettling atmosphere, and some creepy story moments from what I saw of it.

Yeah, it's the atmosphere that does it for me. It's something a lot of games nail, and a lot of movies fail at IMO.

Chapter one of TEW: when you wake up in the cellar there is this disturbed atmosphere. Then this guy starts following you to the elevator with a chainsaw, he starts cutting the fence of the elevator you are escaping in: tense moment !

Eery village with a lighthouse that comes out of nowhere: great atmosphere.

@R4gn4r0k: Haha, yeah I guess that could be tense for some. I actually spoiled the beginning of the game so that was just an obstacle to overcome. There are some weird moments in the game for sure. When you meet Laura, that could be another moment that may freak people out, especially the last time you meet her.

Yeah most games don't do so well on atmosphere but I've noticed lately they have been doing a better job of it, or at least certain devs do. I haven't played SOMA yet, but I'll probably take a crack at it during Halloween. :)

@AznbkdX: Yeah, games seem to succeed more and more in atmosphere. While with horror movies I feel it used to be all about creating a disturbed atmosphere, and now it's all about using cheap tricks to scare people (which doesn't work for me, so I have to sit through a dull movie)

I don't think I've ever seen a horror movie with the atmosphere of say Bioshock.

Looking forward to meeting her, sounds like an interesting girl ^^

Have fun with SOMA !

I don't have anything to contribute really, I just want to say I hope Konami dies of gonorrhea of the eyeballs for cancelling what would have been the best horror game ever created.
