This is in no way a thread to start a bashing war, im actually really wondering if PSP is considered a failure or not. I mean ofcourse the DS is outselling it big time, but is the PSP really considered a failure?!ChristopherM80
Depends who you talk to.
Ask Sony, and I guarantee they would tell you honestly that it did not live up to the expectations that they had for it.
Read any article comparing the two handhelds that was written before August '05 (the coming of Nintendogs, the new king of handheld video gaming), and it is all PSP. I can't remember reading a single article that predicted the DS to come out on top of the war. For about 6 months (until Nintendogs), the PSP was actually killing the DS in worldwide sales, and Nintendo's doom was sure. They had lost the console market, and their stronghold was being ripped from them.
The PSP is a failure in terms of what is was expected to do. It is a failure as a business model.
It is not necessarily a failure as a gaming device, and really, even as overall sales are concerned, either. Although, its software sales are the worst failure about it. Its attach rates and software sales are abysmally awful, and everyone knows, that's what makes a console.
I consider it a failure, but not one of epic proportions.
Hardware sales, no
Software sales, yes.
It's being hurt by the same thing that helped kill the Dreamcast, piracy.
Plus it doesn't really have a real system seller title at the moment, God of War might turn that around but we'll see.
The N-Gage is a failure. The PSP is not. If it were a failure, developers would have dropped support for it long ago. While it didn't outdo the DS, the PSP did great for Sony's first outing into the handheld market. It has like what, a third of the handheld marketshare?
Really, anyone who calls it a failure has no idea what they're talking about. All the heavy-hitters being released for the PSP this year only make that ignorance evermore apparent.

Market share means nothing, really. Especially considering the fact that the DS has sold better so far than any console ever. It's not like the PSP took any of the market away from the DS. It's just that the market was expanded by having a new entry and having a new technology introduced in the same handheld generation.
Also, just because it's Sony's first outing doesn't grant them the rights to fail to secure strong software sales, or fail to secure a lead in the hardware market, as well. Sony didn't go into this project blind. They are an experienced electronics corporation who knew exactly what they were doing going into it, and they got blown out of the water by an "inferior" piece of technology because they did a poor job of supporting their own product and its functionalities, and they opened a small window in late '05 for Nintendo to cut their throats. And cut they did.

Agreed, this explains why there are very few ground up games for it and mostly just ports or multiplats. Even for the future most games are around that spectrum in the state of third parties.
Undoubtebly.
I was there, man. I was there when the PSP was supposed to dominate. I was there when defending the DS was an unenviable position. I WAS THERE. (Note: there =/= SW)

I'm going to assume you meant "handheld" instead of "console" here, since the DS still has a ways to go before passing the PS2. As for the marketshare, yeah, that is pretty important. Having a stake in it means the PSP is here to stay.
Handheld gaming was new territory for Sony. Nintendo, while not being the lead in consoles at the time, was a juggernaut when it came to handhelds. Going against them and not being taken out like every other competitor before them is quite a feat. While they didn't come out at top, they did make their presence known in the handheld market. So, the PSP isn't a failure.

By now it is over 25 million units sold. I was useing that number months ago...
I don't know about you but once Final Fantasy Crisis Core comes out for America I'm getting it. That is if it does. Seriously Square Enix talks about not reaching the western market as big as it use to but maybe its because a lot of their really good games dont come here.
That and Final Fantasy Tactics, Metal Gear Solid portable ops, God of war, Burnout legends, Grand theft auto liberty city stoires, Kingdom hearts birth by sleep...wow this is starting to look like my ps2 library.

so your saying the ds selling 35 million units is better then the ps1 110 milion units or the ps2 120+ million units?
jeez didnt know 35 was bigger then 100
btw the psp has about 22-24 million units sold its not like its losing by a big margin
Overall: No
Objective: Yes, it was supposed to dethrone Nintendo from their handheld spot. It was THE "DS Killer" but did it really? No.
Hardware sales, no
Software sales, yes.

Piracy? DS has it too. Ever heard of the R4?
The TRUTH IS, PSP is not technically a FAILURE. It was the first handheld that ACTUALLY caused some major competition for Nintendo in the handheld (Did GameGear? Forgive me if I'm wrong), HOWEVER...
In terms of competition to the DS, the PSP put up some pretty good numbers, keep in mind they're competing with the Microsoft of handhelds. But, the UMD format as a whole has proven to be a failure. Walmart stopped selling the movies awhile back and..PSP is often called the "development graveyard".
In the end, Nintendo still has it's grip on the handheld industry, but Sony did loosen it.

You don't need extra hardware to do it on the PSP though.
And to the TC, no, the PSP is not a failure, it's got a great game library and it's selling quite well.

The R4 isn't a hardware though. It's a cartridge withsome sort ofcard. The card is used to download the games or something like that. That's what my friend told me. :?
