Is Ryse:Son of Rome really a flop?

Pretty game that had boring gameplay, ie typical crytec recently.

I enjoyed it for what it was: a typical console launch title that was mostly a graphical showpiece..

it looked great, the core combat was solid, the story was interesting, but it was relatively thin on depth and variety.. still, it was a 7/10 caliber game at best.. given more development time, the potential for a truly great game was indeed there though...

To be honest, I kind of liked it. Reviews made me think it was going to be really bad. Wasn't the case IMO. Played through it because it was free with gold. There isn't much to it, and the combat is only decent, but I actually liked the story- and the production/voice acting was like... also kind of good? I was surprised at how the story/production/acting was actually engaging. If there was more to the gameplay/design it would have been a hit. Decent launch game/slice.

Lmao... stop now, you're embarrassing yourself. Forza is better than GT in every way... GT used to be good, but that's ancient history now. But hey, you go play GT Sport (still can't tell if this is even a proper GT game) & us racing fans will stick with the premier racing series, Forza.

Combat felt rewarding and visceral in the same way that God of War does.

I will say it has some major flaws that keeps the combat reaching its full potential.


First time I played the game I got about 1/3rd of the way through and I shut it down and stopped playing.

But then I started playing again, sort of a new game plus... I had unlocked some stuff to make the combat mare varried in the tech tree (honestly this should've been there from the start) and this made the game a lot more fun.

I had new animations, more ways to kill people...

Ok, the turret sections in this game are really bad, but on the other hand this game lets you kick people into spike walls:

I also disagree that this game has too many QTEs, because this game is all about timing your attacks: when you are gonna do a shield attack, when you are gonna do a sword attack or kick... If this game has QTEs, than fighting games are QTEs too :)

It is what it is. I am in agreement with its 60/100 meta average. A mediocre game. I will say this: it has something strange in the harder difficulties. You choose a bonus with your D pad, which is granted for getting the timing and button presses right in the executions. On hardest difficulty choosing to receive the health bonus is paramount. But getting said bonus is challenging. If you press the cooresponding X for blue or Y for yellow isnt enough. The timing is rated from amateur to Centurion and only at high levels does one receive the bonus. This shouldnt be this difficult but for some reason it is. A real practice in self control and screen awareness.

Eh to be honest that little write up almost got me to bother finishing it, it does seem some of the "it's a QTE" is the incorrect reason to shit on that game. Platinum's games have QTE's, and one would be a fool to knock their better games for lacking depth, that or they don't actually know how to use the word "depth" when it comes to video games. Personally it was never cheap enough for a steam purchase, and when I rented it for the xbox, it was well before I read that, and I just wrote it off as "well it's just Batman's combat, but not as good".

Plus Platinum was still on a good run that year with Revengeance n Wonderful 101, and Bayonetta 2, so it was like why would I bother with something this shallow?

Would recommend reading that dude's combat analysis vids, and putting Aztez on a watch list though. Some of the stuff he says is way too scrub talk for my liking, but he's also got some nifty insight and can clearly play these type of games.

Game was OK for me, a 6.5/10. Great visuals, good story, nice music, I'm just not that into these type of games. The review it got from Gamespot was quite shit

More cars, more tracks, more modes? Just because it has more of something, doesn't make it good. Quality over quantity Grandpa...

Forza has established itself as a well-known racing game the past few years and GT has been in a decline...

I'm not sure the comparison with fighting games holds up or even the comparison with Bayonetta which the article has made, the significant difference is that in Ryse you're constantly in execution mode, dealing with quick time events over and over to the point that you really don't feel like you're in control, and it disrupts the flow of the game, in Batman or Bayonetta you're in this amazing flow constantly thinking about your next move but in Ryse the flow gets disrupted by those executions with long animations, making the game not challenging enough, what I love about the QTEs in Bayonetta is that they create this cathartic moment in the middle of an intense combat, it feels so rewarding as you need to earn them, one hit and you lose that moment, but in Ryse you can easily execute , you don't have to pull off some amazing skill to earn it hence not rewarding.

Maybe if I'd played more it would've gotten more enjoyable, but the combat was nowhere near Batman or Bayonetta

Of course it's a flop. It got a 6.

That being said I really liked the game. Yeah, it was repetitive as hell but if it's something fun that gets repeated I don't really mind. And slaying people was fun and very challenging, too, on the hardest difficulty. I also spent a surprising amount of time with the multiplayer. I'm not really a multiplayer guy but this one had me coming back for a few weeks at least.

The comparison between the two games he made is more with the set up, that a lot of the game is navigating your enemies (and actually not focusing on your own character necessarily, but what's around you), and using a fairly simple n quick defense mechanic (Bayonetta's evade, Ryse's shield). The difference is you have more of a choice to mess with the qte finishers in Bayonetta, and they have more value.

One you can earn and lose them-getting hit hurts your magic meter, which means you lose finishers. And on higher difficulties you'll want that extra added hit. Where as Ryse like God of War is all about the finishers often to a detriment, because well it's a mindless execution that's not a product of player's skill, nor is the player punished for playing poorly.

That and Bayonetta animates way better, has way more interesting enemies, has a more diverse offering of enemies, a far more diverse and better selection of weapons, is far more replayable, I mean w...lots of games are shitty in a direct comparison to Bayonetta's combat lol. If Ryse does anything better, it's that you don't mash buttons during the QTE's the way you do in Bayonetta. Like the megaton/gigaton stuff adds nothing to the experience, and would be better if they were Y+B routine, and we move on.

But sure I didn't like Ryse for similar reasons.

I also find Batman flat out does that brand of rhythm combat better, for starters it's not tied to an execution, those execution moves are earned at different points in the combo chain and not integral to the overall combat, where as it is in finishing off enemies in Ryse, and you have gadgets to work with as far as messing with the enemies. And rhythm is more obvious, Batman is routinely either punished or limited for going off rhythm, where as in Ryse, I mean **** you can get the execution button wrong because you're lazy and the game lets you off the hook. That and Batman has a nifty little stealth game to play in between the combat, so it's paced better than most beat-em ups.

And yeah that blog is pretty legit, actually responded to my interview request n everything, though it had to be me sending him questions via email, but all good none the less. If it makes you feel better, he can also make cons that I think are fucking stupid, like the following

• Even on the default difficulty setting, the game is fairly difficult. This in itself isn't any kind of a problem, but the real issue here is the secret game buried inside of Bayonetta; that game is "playing Bayonetta for a respectable rank". Shit gets real when you attempt this, and there is no valid introduction to this inner-game and all of its complexity which makes it that much more incredibly difficult than it already is.

Which while bayonetta does a poor job maybe explaining its scoring system during the game, sort of, is objectively false. I mean it's fairly obvious how you play the secret game. Don't get hit, kill efficiently but with style. Pure Platinum. The end. The mechanics underneath the combat engine that the game doesn't even teach are a larger issue, and maybe one too many redundant states.

The last GT game outscored Forza..lol

GT6 has 81% Forza 5 which came 1 month before had 79% both are 2013 games,even that GT6 was done for PS3 with lesser graphics still outscored Forza 5.

I played ryse at a pre-release XB1 event in London some years ago and had two impressions:

1 - It looked gorgeous

2 - It played slow and boring

Having played more of the game since, I hold onto both those opinions. Heck, the game isn't even that good looking by today's standards, even for XB1.

So don't tell me Forza was better than GT in everything it simple wasn't,Forza had more premium cars and better controls and physics if you are willing to ignore Forza short comings before F6.

This 2 games both came in 2013 one was superior technically to the other even on an inferior platform.

Forza is a beat up series by now is the call of duty of racing with one every year,by this year there will be 5 Forza games on xbox one in 4 years which show hos sad it has become the milking.

Played it for about 3 hours on a buddies XB1. If I wasn't an ancient Rome junkie, I might have bored much sooner. As it is, I'd definitely own the game if I was on XB1.

Pretty game but boring. There are better Rome themed games like Total War or Shadow of Rome a very underrated ps2 game.

Rome 2 Total War is a broken game, nothing will ever fix that strategy game. Attitla has a later period of Roman history, it's a great game.

I've never seen so many people defend such a miserable flop. Envisioned as a kinnect non-game, crytek was forced to change it during development and so they took the easy route and threw in the most shallow, repetitive combat and gameplay we've ever seen to have it ready for launch, but focused on the graphics because that's what was going to sell it. No word or thoughts towards any sequels because Microsoft know it's an utter forgettable turd. It only existed to look pretty and sell a console at launch. Xbox fanboys are so loyal though they'll sit here and defend this forgettable garbage to the death.

Give it up lems, it's not even exclusive anymore LOL it's far better on PC. You don't hear cows trying to idolize Knack do you. @mjorh: The game becomes really fun if you keep with it. Just invest all your XP in new moves and new finishers to spice up the gameplay.

Sunset Overdrive is one of my favorite games of the gen. But all the games i listed either had low scores, low sales or both. Not that hard to read.

I agree that megaton/gigaton stuff could've been better but I like the way and why they've been implemented in Bayo, you see getting that meter filled is not easy and sometimes it's crucial, so once you work so hard to get that I feel like you need that short break from combat and what's a better break than a cathartic and hilarious QTE finisher? it gives you a room to breathe and sometimes it makes you hopeful for the rest of the battle, there was this one time that I had so little health left but I managed to get the meter filled, killing one of them by torture attack and being on my A-game, killed the second one as well without getting one hit, so yeah that QTE helped a lot, had it been a little bit more tricky, I might have screwed it up hence disrupting the flow, I mean getting killed during a QTE sucks, so making it trickier or sth doesn't make sense to me :D, overall I like the way it's been handled in Bayonetta, however, even in Bayonetta there have been a couple of sections where you must push a button at a certain moment, which that sucks too...it's a cheap death.

Yeah Batman feels like a dance, it's simply brilliant, I love the combat and stealth in that series, however, the series could've used some better boss battles (the potential was there), or a bit more variety with the encounters, and I like the scoring system better in Bayonetta, I think it's more incentivizing than Batman, I'm struggling to come up with a good reason for this but there's sth about Bayonetta that makes me replay it more than Batman ...hmm I think I gotta pay another visit to Batman series to find out why.

Cupcake, Gamespot generally scores most games on the lower end. It's not about you or Xbox.

I like it, actually. A lot of the gaming press - from IGN to all the amateur sites - are too hype-prone. Sometimes games are bad.
