Poll Is Ryse:Son of Rome really a flop? (95 votes)

Ryse Rules 36%
Floppus Maximus 64%

As you may or may not know, recently one of the Xbox games with gold was Ryse: Son of Rome. Let me first off say I am not a big fan of hack slash or beat em up games but I found the combat in Ryse to be absolutely enthralling. There was just so many different ways you can execute your enemies and you unlock even more ways as you go, adding to the limb-chopping, shield-bashing action. The story focuses on Marius and his quest to save Rome. He is fueled with both pride... and vengeance to kill those who wronged him. It is like a Max Payne set in Roman times. The story was great and I found the battles, special effects and music made it that much more epic.

What do you think?

Of course it's a flop. It got a 6.

That being said I really liked the game. Yeah, it was repetitive as hell but if it's something fun that gets repeated I don't really mind. And slaying people was fun and very challenging, too, on the hardest difficulty. I also spent a surprising amount of time with the multiplayer. I'm not really a multiplayer guy but this one had me coming back for a few weeks at least.

LOL actually it got a 4/10. Its 60/100 on metacritic but Gamespot has a tendency to low ball Xbox games in comparison to their meta average.

Cupcake, Gamespot generally scores most games on the lower end. It's not about you or Xbox.

I like it, actually. A lot of the gaming press - from IGN to all the amateur sites - are too hype-prone. Sometimes games are bad.

Explain Until Dawn 9/10, 79/100 Meta; Grav Rush 2 9/10, 80/100 meta; TLG 9/10, 82/100 meta please. Whereas Gears Ultimate is 7/10, 82/100 meta; Gears 4 is 7/10, 84/100 meta, QB 6/10, 77/100 meta, HW2 6/10, 79/100 meta. Forza 5 is the one Xbox game that got overshot.

I have 2 friends that have met Brown, Mahardy and Tamoor at E3 and they openly said they grew up on Nintendo and PS and prefer them. Its just being human. Objectivity is a lie where humans are concerned.

And yes, sometimes games are bad. But gamers are nobody to go by. There is this asinine idea that a 10 point scale means 7 is average quality and below is bad. Thats retardation to the fullest.

@cainetao11: I've met them all at E3. They are all mainly Nintendo fanboys to the fullest, but then favor the PS4 heavily as well. Tamoor especially is as bad as some of the cows on this forum.

The thing that people on this forum dont actually seem to realize since most people here dont actually read anything on this site besides the forum, is GS jumped the shark a long time ago and they definitely have bias this gen favoring Sony since they are in the lead.

Thats basically what Danny was talking about in his solo op-ed after he left.

This site is mostly a clickbait factory now. Real gaming discussion rarely happens in the features anymore.

Well said, I've noticed Gamespot's trend to low-ball Xbox related games for quite some time.. You can typically look at the metascore and predict that if a game has about an 80% on Metacritic, it will get a 7/10 on Gamespot if it's Xbox related and it will get a 9/10 on Gamespot if it's PlayStation related..

This effectively feeds into the general impression that all Xbox games are flopping and all PlayStation games are exceeding expectations when, in reality, many of those games are in the same ballpark.. I'm not trying to put on the "tin foil hat" here but the evidence is right there in front of us.. and like you said, more-so now than ever, these review scores seem to be more personal and subjective than ever.. these reviewers seem to want to put their personal stamp on everything and are treating these reviews like personal blogs rather than objective references of quality..

As such, we as gamers, need to really start reading these reviews instead of skimming them, looking at the final review score, and blindly proclaiming "flop" or not.. that's what I've started to do anyway, more-so now than I've ever done in the past.. As a result of this current trend, I feel a lot of people on this forum may have skipped out on a great 84% metacritic game like Gears of War 4 that has a total package of an interesting and solid single player campaign coupled with stellar and lasting multiplayer simply because one person at Gamespot lowballed it with a 7/10 bolstered with a healthy dose of "The Coalition sucks" hyperbole when, in fact, the game is great in just about every category.. /rant

@Antwan3K:Agreed. Dude go google the Gears 4 hype thread. I called the score on the dot as well as who would review it. Mahardy, the previous year when he gave Gears Ultimate a 7/10, on the lobby he said "the Gears gameplay loop doesnt excite me anymore". So what do you do as a gaming site? Give him the next Gears to review? That would be like asking me to review Persona games after I have very openly said they bore me to tears.

@Antwan3K: Thats what I mean by them having bias. If all you want is clicks you do what the partisan cable news channels do and favor one side over the other. you still cover both but you slant in favor of the bigger demographic. Its no coincidence that most of the Xbox articles on this site are Eddie clickbait articles.

It'll really be telling if Scorpio comes out, is a big hit and the GS slant starts leaning in the other direction.

Lmao... stop now, you're embarrassing yourself. Forza is better than GT in every way... GT used to be good, but that's ancient history now. But hey, you go play GT Sport (still can't tell if this is even a proper GT game) & us racing fans will stick with the premier racing series, Forza.

http://www.metacritic.com/game/xbox-one/forza-motorsport-5

F5 release on November 2013 79%

http://www.metacritic.com/game/playstation-3/gran-turismo-6

GT6 release in December 2013. 81%.

Now before we compare score mind you that GT6 is a PS3 game on a last gen console, and Forza 5 was 1080p 60FPS glory on a next gen console..

GT6 has more cars.

More tracks.

More modes than Forza 5.

Not only that even that it is a last gen console GT6 features night to day racing something totally absent in Forza 5.

But it doesn't stop there even that it was done for a last gen console GT6 included dynamic weather.

Loading Video...

And to think this is a PS3 game dynamic day to night dynamic weather which Forza didn't introduce until F6.

So don't tell me Forza was better than GT in everything it simple wasn't,Forza had more premium cars and better controls and physics if you are willing to ignore Forza short comings before F6.

This 2 games both came in 2013 one was superior technically to the other even on an inferior platform.

That is funny because GT also outsell Forza so more people actually dive into GT that the so call real racer..lol

But then again without score you have nothing, and is those scores who elevated Forza once to an all high pedestal and then drop it Forza is not what it use to be either and F5 and F6 fail to reach 90% status it was the spin off horizon the one that did.

@kinky-unikorn said:

More cars, more tracks, more modes? Just because it has more of something, doesn't make it good. Quality over quantity Grandpa...

Forza has established itself as a well-known racing game the past few years and GT has been in a decline...

Yeah but having less doesn't make it better in any way.

Yeah that is the excuse use by pathetic fanboys who don't have it their way, last GT came in 2013 and out score Forza 5 which also came in 2013 both 1 month apart.

Yeah because forza hasn't being in decline like everything on xbox,a franchise that was purely 90+ dropped from 91 on F4 to 79 on F5 then rise to 86 with F6,but didn't rise to 90% again,it was the spin off FH which at last landed a 90% which the main 2 chapters in that spin off didn't.

Forza is a beat up series by now is the call of duty of racing with one every year,by this year there will be 5 Forza games on xbox one in 4 years which show hos sad it has become the milking.

From the last 5 Forza games only 1 scored 90 the rest mid 80's and high 70's,that my friend is a decline on series that scored nothing but 90 or better and did so 4 times in a row.

But i don't expect you to get it because well we are on a thread were lemmings are defending a shitty game that scored 60,wanting to change the rules by what the game is play yet again, now a 60 is ok if you like the game because scores don't matter every single buffoon who defend this game will be quoted when the next PS4 game get a score like that.. This thread has been bookmarked for future fun making..hahahahaa

Take it easy Grandpa...take your blood pressure pills...lol. I like racing games, what console it's on or if it's on PC doesn't make a difference to me. I have my pro's and con's with Microsoft, Sony, & Nintendo; along with PC. The last Forza game, Horizon III has the been one of the best racing games I've played in a while, it's fun. I haven't found the last GT to be that much fun, and I thought 5 was decent...

I liked it when it first came out. But I tried playing it the other day, and I realized why it got a low score. It was pretty to look at, but the combat sucked. Maybe I liked it more when the STARZ show "Spartacus" was going on...

By GS rules (old school rules, which I adhere to) it was definitely a "flop". Some flop games I liked, though - Too Human comes to mind.

It was an epic flop that pretty much sums up the Xbone lineup this gen.

Kinda like The Order... lmao. Now that was a flop.

XBox has had more flops to be fair.

Ryse, Titanfall, Recore, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break all had low scores, low sales, or both (I wont count Gears 4 even tho it got a 7, we all know it still sold millions)

Ryse of the Tomb Raider was kind of a flop business deal for Microsoft....

Playstation has had one first party flop with Driveclub and 2 third party flops with The Order: 1886 and No Mans Sky

Wtf are you talking about? Sunset Overdrive is currently 81 on Metacritic, Quantum Break is 77, Titanfall 1 is 86... and Gears 4 is 84. All are great games (especially Sunset Overdrive & Gears 4).

Nice try cow.

Sunset Overdrive is one of my favorite games of the gen. But all the games i listed either had low scores, low sales or both. Not that hard to read.

Sunset Overdrive= high scores, low sales

Quantum Break = low scores, low sales

Quantum Break didn't have low scores... it scored well. And I didn't know that "low sales" instantly meant a game was classed as a "flop". Good to know...

I agree, it is a flop.

But people are still free to enjoy what the game did right :)

and it's a million times better than what that Kinect Ryse would've been.

It was iirc the flagship title for the release of Xbox One...yeah, it was a shocking flop.

Above all else, it essentially sealed the fate of Crytek, who when signing that deal with the devil started getting high off their own farts and stopped making good games and started making good marketing. Then they just started lying, overspending, and being idiots.

With that said, I played it a few years after it came out and, as with most flops/extremely hated games, it is not that bad. I'm playing through Homefront: The Revolution right now, for example, and I'm finding it pretty fun, too, and that game was panned as well.

Of course you would, just look at your avatar ffs :D LMAO

I've never seen so many people defend such a miserable flop. Envisioned as a kinnect non-game, crytek was forced to change it during development and so they took the easy route and threw in the most shallow, repetitive combat and gameplay we've ever seen to have it ready for launch, but focused on the graphics because that's what was going to sell it. No word or thoughts towards any sequels because Microsoft know it's an utter forgettable turd. It only existed to look pretty and sell a console at launch. Xbox fanboys are so loyal though they'll sit here and defend this forgettable garbage to the death.

Give it up lems, it's not even exclusive anymore LOL it's far better on PC. You don't hear cows trying to idolize Knack do you. No because real gamers can acknowledge when a turd is a turd without needing to defend it for fanboy reasons. Also helps that cows have a billion other games to play lol while lemmings have very few.

TL;DR - Xbox sucks.

You guys like Playstation, avatar's don't mean shit. I play games on xbox one and have a good time. You don't game on xbox one therefore the opinion you have is worthless to me!

I'm really bias when i posted the Steam reviews for Ryse? How many of the reviewers care about console war's?

"You don't share my same bias, therefore your opinion/argument is ignored by me"

It's like a manchild covering his ears and going "get that science away from my god!!!"

You said something genuinely ignorant.

Good to know...

http://store.steampowered.com/app/474960/Quantum_Break/ 86 per cent of reviews are positive.

Yep... but I'm sure he'll twist this around somehow. "Bu bu but it didn't sell well,so it's a flop". Lol. Please.

https://www.gamespot.com/articles/quantum-break-sold-really-well-beat-microsofts-exp/1100-6443009/

"Quantum Break sold really well; it exceeded what we expected it to do," he said when discussing what Remedy might make next with Windows Central. "We were really pleased with how Quantum Break did. But just like every movie, not every game needs a sequel, sometimes it's okay."

lol

Kinda like The Order... lmao. Now that was a flop.

XBox has had more flops to be fair.

Ryse, Titanfall, Recore, Sunset Overdrive, Quantum Break all had low scores, low sales, or both (I wont count Gears 4 even tho it got a 7, we all know it still sold millions)

Ryse of the Tomb Raider was kind of a flop business deal for Microsoft....

Playstation has had one first party flop with Driveclub and 2 third party flops with The Order: 1886 and No Mans Sky

TF wasn't a flop.

https://www.forbes.com/forbes/welcome/?toURL=https://www.forbes.com/sites/insertcoin/2014/05/06/ea-net-revenue-down-releases-no-titanfall-sales-numbers/&refURL=https://www.google.com/&referrer=https://www.google.com/

Why do you think the second game was multiplatform?

Why do you think the second game was multiplatform?

EA said it exceeded expectations, and mcirosoft said it did better than expected: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-06-13-amid-rumours-of-titanfall-2-for-ps4-ea-and-respawn-reflect-on-launch

AND Tf1 beat TF2's UK launch: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1304003

The reason why TF2 was multiplat was because of the success of the first game and the Microsoft deal being temporary (and sudden according respawn who also praised the first games sales)

Not only was it not a flop, but even today it is still the best looking game on console.

I'd say its closer to Knack than anything. Knack sold quite a bit more though.

Scorewise you're absolutely right. I wouldn't touch any of those games either way. Way too many quality titles out there.

Honestly between the two, Ryse looks more appealing to me. As far as The Order and Knack go I would totally play them as a ps+ game but I don't think i'll be spending money on either directly anytime soon.

Knack was heavily bundled that's why it sold more than the order.

Ny SW standards, yep. I Believe it was touted AAA or AA here. Scored below that (again, SW and Gamespot definitions). I've never played it, so I can't comment personally.

True Killzone wasn't great but it was solid. Unlike battlefield 4 the multiplayer actually worked.
