Is Shadow of Mordor the first true next gen game?

Games like Infamous, Destiny, Watch Dogs, Wolfenstein, and Titan Fall all definitely look better on next gen hardware, but all of them still feel very standard as well. Shadows of Mordor is the first game I played this gen that feels truly polished and fresh. It has an open world that feels truly alive, something that really hasn't been done before. Not only does it look the part, it actually plays the part as well.

Anyone else agree?

Practically every aspect of the game has cynically taken elements from other games and stamped in on a well known money maker license.

A good game? Yes. Original and fresh? **** no.

The Tomb Raider the Definitive Edition and Wolfenstein have really impressed me a lot I dunno maybe I'm easily impressed.

Not the nemesis system, and the elements it does take from other games are polished beyond the originals. The combat is more fluid and has a lot more depth then the Arkham series. Exploring the world is far more seamless then the Assassin's Creed series

I've seen alot of the gameplay and it feels like this game could get boring after awhile.

Mordor is on last gen consoles. Seems like AC Unity is the first true next gen game.

Watch Dogs, Dead Rising 3, Wolfenstein The New Order, Ryse, Shadow Of Mordor, Assassins Creed IV Blag Flag , Infamous second Son, Killzone Shadow Fall, Destiny, The Evil Within are true next gen games currently. TLOU, TR, Metro, GTA V are old gen inspite remastered.

While it has taken elements from other franchises, the Uruk Captain system is truly innovative and next-gen.

I forgot to add The Metro Series to the list, didn't you think metro 2033 and last light we're next gen games?

I don't know if I would consider Shadow of Mordor to be NeXT gen in any way. But I will give it credit for the nemesis system, which is atleast a step in the right direction.

But from a technical standpoint it is not really anything I would consider NeXT gen. It takes a good long step in the direction though, so while I don't think shadow of mordor is, the sequal might well be.

They r just updated versions of last gen games . Like those HD remakes on PS 3 ( DMC, Splinter Cell, POP PS 2 versions trilogy ).

It's a cross gen game . The day when devs will go full current gen, the hardware will be even more outdated .

There is nothing fresh about it I think AC: Unity will do a better version of the "climb and shallow battle in open world" gameplay. So far non of the "next gen" games felt really next gen to me

I wouldn't say original and fresh since it takes elements from other games in a scansalous way, but i kinda agree with you.

It's incredibly polished for a new IP, and the new hierarchy system does scream next gen.

Still, Shadow fo Mordor is pretty good game. Been playing for almosta week, and the combat, movement and nemesis system is pretty good.

I hope they make a sequel to improve the story, and variety of activities.

A lot of these games have little pieces of next gen but one really scream it yet. I only have a slight interest to play Shadows of Mordor so I can't speak for that game.

Maybe Sunset Overdrive will be next gen.

Played around with it for 4 hours... Its a fun game but its basically Batman Creed Orc Edition.

As for it being a true next gen experience?... What does that even mean?... the only thing separating a PS3 from a PS4 is power. The PS4 doesn't offer anything new to add to gameplay so the games will basically be the same and any innovation will come purely from the developers but with the cost of games and from what we can see so far developers are pretty much selling sequels and remakes from last generation.

If Shadow of Mordor is the generation defining game so far then this truly is the worst generation of consoles.

This generation starts when VR is released and AAA games start to use it.

Are you going to tell me that this is a bad thing too? Most good games are just a collage of previously executed ideas. That is the nature of human creation in general; everything is a remix. Some disguise it better than others.

It's cross gen, but the last gen versions don't have the nemesis system.

I hope you're not serious. The PS3 had a very low amount of memory to work with. The majority of games built last gen had to work around hardware limitations. Now with more power and memory, developers can be more ambitious with what they can do. The nemesis system is the first step in this progress.

I don't see how Shadows of Mordor defines this as the worst console generation. It is a fantastic game, I don't see how 4 hours with it is enough to make such a judgement.

The nemesis system is amazing.It's something i would call next gen.

The game is nothing special... the graphics are not particularly great, the gameplay has been done before on lower spec hardware, other games have had better AI, other games have had more enemies on screen at once.

Then again I've only played it for about an hour but I don't see whats so special about this game that puts it above the rest.

I think compared to something like Oblivion, this game shows a huge leap. I especially like how Talion's clothes sway in the wind.

Mordor is a good game, but the only thing that is really new in it is the nemesis system.

Yes, I know. Shadow of Mordor does look pretty fresh. People just can't seem to look past the arkham combat and movement systems.

No i still think Infamous 2nd Son was the first true next gen game. You can downplay any game with what you say...like Shadow of mordor is just a Assassins Creed with "Lord of the rings" -skin.

Its exactly like Batman's cape from Arkham. I'm pretty sure its the exact same engine and WB dev team as the Arkham prequel. The nemesis system is pretty awesome. My level 20 nemesis got killed while recruiting and I went on an orc killing rampage after that. I was just there to babysit and I failed my buddy. :(

The entire Nemesis system is missing from the last gen consoles - the devs said the machines didn't have enough CPU and memory available to run all of the AI. It is a vastly different game on 360 & PS3.

I feel you are using arbitrary standards define your beliefs. Shadow of Mordor is a very good game with a great feature in the Nemesis system, but games like Destiny and Titanfall are just as "next gen" as Shadow of Mordor.

Honestly, I'm not thrilled about SoM. The nemesis system negates the use of checkpoints, meaning if you die, you gots to go all the way back to the nearest tower. This wouldn't be so bad if the combat didn't throw 20-30 guys at you, but early game it is insane how under-powered you feel.

Then once you reach the second map (spoiler alert - whatever), the game just feels stale. Same missions, same combat, uninteresting story with largely forgettable characters.

I'll probably force myself to complete it like I did Watchdogs (since I forked out over £20 for it at launch), but it has seriously made me reconsider buying any current gen game at full price, new IP or otherwise
