I hope that that is not the truth, but as the days go on and more news about things like not sufficient space for games and all the money they are losing on the console itself, all of it kinda makes me think. I just hope it doesn't die a premature death like two other favorite consoles of mine, the Xbox and Dreamcast. Everyday I read on here how everyone thinks the 360 isgonna fade awayafter this yearwith factors such as the lineup of games for the PS3 and how Microsoft's 2008 lineup is still a small list that is shrouded in secrecy. Granted, yes, the PS3 has a very strong lineup of games for next year, but I still think, and hope, that MS has something up their sleeves. It's just hard sometimes not to listen to other people cause they are the ones that purchase these games, and with the way they are starting to bad mouth the 360 and are on the PS3 bandwagon. Yes, the PS3 will have a great lifecycle, but it just doesn't impress me the way the 360 has. It was the only next-gen system that I truly wanted to buy the first day it came out. What I'm trying to get at, is I hope publishers and developers stick with the 360 and see it through, and that people continue to support it for the great system that it is, but if not, I fear the worst. sebs09dont listen to the cows... i.e peoplewho have killzone 2 gifs... snake as their avatar or the three red lights of death...or have somejapanese person in their avatarthey are all mindless fanboys

No the PS3 and Wii are being abandoned. In fact Sony and Nintendo are going under in afew days, and Bill Gates will be crowned King of the Galaxy next year.

I try not to listen, and I usually don't, but when it starts showing up on gaming websites and stuff, it's hard to ignore.

Sometimes I feel this way. I want to keep my 360 but I feel like its half next gen. Developers are already complaining about a lack of space, though they find ways to get around this how long will they want to? Devs are going to want freedom to make the games, no feel like they have to compress it.
Abandoning DVD and making HD-DVD would mean we would need to buy the HD-DVD drive, I don't think thats going to happen.

[QUOTE="sebs09"]Would they be able to use the HD-DVD add on for games if they really needed to, or is it built just for movies?terdoo
I think its only built for movies unfortunatly.
HD-DVD isn't "Built" for movies any more than DVD or Blu Ray are "built" for movies, or any more than CD's are "built" for music.
They are all just storage media. You can store anything on them, Games, music, movies, etc.... they just all store different amounts of data.
HD-DVD is perfectly capable of being used for games. However, the 360 will not use it for games, it would alienate a huge portion (those that don't own the HDDVD add-on) of the 360 fanbase. The drive in the 360 is capable of playing DVD's (and CD's maybe?) only, not HD-DVD's. In order for games to be played on the 360 using HD-DVD everyone would have to purchase the add-on, and Microsoft would NEVER do that.
HD-DVD is not needed.
Games like Oblivion and Halo 3 prove this.

This is true. While I tend to favor the Blue Ray format more, I have to agree that it really isnt necessary. Im more for Blu-Ray because like the PS2 ushered in DVDs, the PS3 is ushering in Blu-Ray. Sure people complain right now about it being expensive and what not, but remember when the PS2 came out? People also complained about how expensive it was and the fact that CDs were more than big enough for everything you need. But look how DVDs have completely stolen the market. I think Blu-Ray will gain momentum, not to DVD lvls but enough to make the profitable. But DVD9s are still fine for video games, you just need the right compression tools. But i can see it becoming a problem in 3-4years but I also have a sneaking suspiscion that we will be on X720 by then......The only 2 real flaws that X360 has are its shoddy hardware, and the lack of a HDD on every console. Other than that it fine.
At its conception, the 360 had thought about the timing, price and impact it would have on the "next gen". The PS3 chose to take a similar approach but factor in the blueray as the trojan horse much the same way they did with DVD and the PS2. You have to remember that before the PS2 there was the dreamcast and it had a GDROM format which was above standard cd but not DVD. Mostly because of cost. It really helps when you not only make the console but the components that power it.
Sony has an edge in this department. It has for years and will have for years to come. MS isn't a system maker so it would explain why they chose not to look beyond the dvd format. I will say that while capacity plays a part, programming and how you use that capacity plays an even bigger part. There needs to be more programmers that have the knowledge to take advantage of every amount of space a format has to offer.
Blueray is great but I don't think they will fill it up in the sense of amount of content (400 hours of gameplay) instead of size of the content (high res textures and lossless audio). In fact I'd like to see more use of the capacity to store more information and not just higher def information. By that I mean take an entire season of a show and instead of spanning it over 5 DVD's you put it all on one Blueray disc in the same res as the standard DVD. That would be using the capacity to its intent.
A really good programmer can work beyond the constraints of a format to deliver the best content the system has to offer. If that means spanned discs then so be it. I like my 360 and would really like to see more effort put into the downloadable content. Especially the live arcade games. I don't remember golden axe on the genesis taking up 30+ mbytes of cartridge space (8 mbit at most). What's up with that?

Very good points there, I agree with your post. And yes I would love to see MS put more effort into the downloadable content space too.

Look all the news that you are hearing about the 360, A LOT of it is coming from fanboys from within system wars, I really wouldn't take everything you read in here seriously. Secondly you should be asking yourself about PS3, and how they are getting sued for the cell. Also do you have any clue how much sony has lost in the past year on the PS3, and the fact of how much money they are losing on every PS3 that is made??
It's fair to say XBOX as a brand hasn't been all that profitable. The 360 however, does look like it will be the turning point. The lawsuits and warranty extension suck, but their software sales are good, and if they fix their problems they still have several years to hang. Time of course, will be much kinder to the PS3 than the 360. Graphics and technical capability discussion aside, its features look to the future. Blu-ray disc for gaming, but also, Blu-ray player for people who have an HDTV. DVD was already out for a while before the PS2. The DVD player didn't mean that much to most people. On the other hand, Blu-ray is brand spanking new, and it offers a LARGE jump in capacity from DVD, and many Blu-ray movies are in 1080p resolution. Everyone who has a 1080p LCD tv or one of the newer 1080p Plasmas, or even if you only have a 720p TV, buying a PS3 makes a lot of sense.
PS3 sales in NA are rather sad, and the PS3 faces many more problems as it is fighting an uphill battle due to its lower install base. To me, the PS3 looks to be in more trouble than the 360, but I wouldn't be TOO surprised if XBOX doesn't participate in the next gen. I can't see them ditching this generation what with the falcon chips and all (I can't see it fixing all the hardware problems, but no doubt it will help). They're probably gonna milk the 360. They have a larger install base than the PS3, and games are selling, as long as those two things remain true, i don't think MS would abandon their 360.
HD DVD is not needed. Does it help? Yes, it helps. But is it NEEDED? No. Games are still being made for the Xbox 360 despite the limitations of DVD, and that will continue to be the case for the forseeable future.
As it becomes easier to make Xbox 360 games, as code becomes more optimized and efficient, it will require less space. Also, Microsoft is constantly working on lossless compression algorithms to put more on 360 DVDs than otherwise possible. Not like they have a choice about this.
Blu-Ray makes it easier, but it's not necessary.

Sony is not losing a lot of money...their SCE wants to milk the PS2 and not lose too much in the PS3's now. It may not be intentional that their star lineup doens't hit till next year, but by then, production costs would be down. By playing passive, it's losing market shares, and stifling its potential profits from the PS3 brand. I won't say the 360 has proven itself as the winner yet. I have no idea what the hardware will be like with the new falcon chips but if it's still anything around 5% or higher defect rate, you can expect a consumer reaction to catch up pretty quick. the 30% now is just amazingly...amazing. Imagine a TV with a 30% defect rate...even w/ a decent warranty...(MS's isn't that great, they HAVE to reproduce the red rings) it's dead in the water.
The 360 has gotten over its craptastic hardware and built an install base so i can only imagine smooth sailing for a few years.
Edit: by gotten over i mean it has sold DESPITE it.
Anyone who thinks 9GB isn't enough to store a game on is foolish. This paticular thread reminds me of watching those videos of the lines at the PS3 launch. When asked why people wanted a PS3, more than one exchange went like this:
Reporter: "So, why do you want a PS3?"
Guy in Line: "Uhh . . . because of BluRay."
Reporter: "And why's that?"
Guy in Line: "It makes the games better."
Seriously, guys. Get over it. DVD9 isn't going away any time soon.
Anyone who thinks 9GB isn't enough to store a game on is foolish.
No...Blue Dragon is 3 discs and about 25 GB, meaning 9 GB is NOT enough to store that game. If MS could use the HDD to stream data from the disc and compress the data within it, they would have no problem with storage this gen.
[QUOTE="Ragnarok1051"]dont listen to the cows... i.e peoplewho have killzone 2 gifs... snake as their avatar or the three red lights of death...or have somejapanese person in their avatarthey are all mindless fanboys[QUOTE="hobbit93"][QUOTE="sebs09"]I hope that that is not the truth, but as the days go on and more news about things like not sufficient space for games and all the money they are losing on the console itself, all of it kinda makes me think. What I'm trying to get at, is I hope publishers and developers stick with the 360 and see it through, and that people continue to support it for the great system that it is, but if not, I fear the worst. hobbit93
You forgot to mention the people who have halo, mass effect, blue dragon, or a gears of war avatar..sig, or whatever. They are all mindless fanboys as well.
not as crazy and annoying as the cows'
All fanboys are the same.....its just because you hate ps3 for some reason (probably because you cant get one but you have yourself convinced that it sucks) you think anybody that says anything good about ps3 is annoying....
While the mindless fanboys that praise 360 (75% of system wars) arent annoying because they are saying stuff you want to hear...
Fact: All Fanboys are fools

I agree totally, 2008 will make or break the 360, if it doesn't have the titles to compete with PS3 it may be in trouble, similar to how lemmings will say the PS3 is in trouble nowbecause it doesnt have the huge titles that the 360 has.
Say what? Devs would be stupid to abandon the 360! 40 or so AA titles, 6 AAAs, and 18 million sellers... All devs know they can make good money on 360 games, not to mention it has the best online service and nice media features...
Plus, look around these boards. There is a list somewhere of a slew of 360 games coming in 08.
Despite the fact that the Xbox was more powerful and easier to develop for than the PS2, the PS2 won handily because, even if developers would rather go somewhere else, PS2 had a larger installed base.
Same goes for the 360. It may not have blue-ray, but as long as it is the market leader, it will always have the most great games for it. If the PS3 sells more, then you are in some trouble, but as long as MS is competitive in installed base, it will be strongly supported.rpawloski2458
Good point there.
