No, it's defective just like the rest of them with a high chance of failing.

It's essentially a premium with a black paint job and a 120HDD slapped on it instead of a 20.

Maybe not, but if you buy one you can still play your first 360 if it dies! Or the reverse. (thats sort of what happend to me...:)

From what I can recall, the Elite was released around the time Microsoft made a few changes to the 360's cooling system and threw in HDMI so at the time, it was more reliable. Now, those changes have been made to newer Premium and Core (is it Arcade now?) models being shipped, so no.
