Poll Is the extra SSD speed on PS5 worth the loss in performance? (40 votes)

Yes the extra second is well worth the dip in performance 18%
No they should have put more in game performance 83%

This is how fast Witcher fast travel is on series X, for it to be faster on PS5 it could literally only save 1-2 seconds of time. Maybe less with optimization.

While there haven't been much comparisons yet 2 games have already come out as native 4k on Series X and up-scaled on PS5.

Is the SSD speed worth the drop in performance/GPU?

As games get bigger and more complex loading times will increase. And then the relative faster loading on ps5 will translate to more seconds.

"As games get bigger and more complex loading times will increase."

Bigger than what exactly? Game worlds as of now are overwhelming large.

The clip shown in the OP looks like he is fast traveling nearby, which is typically fast.

At the moment, there isn't enough information to state whether it was worth the performance hit or not.

The amount of data required to load. Has nothing to do with the size of the game world.

@Pedro: I think he's talking about gig size, because now developers are going to be able to have more unique assets in the world as opposed to repeated assets and textures.

But, it could be the opposite, as both Insomniac and Sucker Punch both stated that large game files are due to duplicated assets to help with load times, with an SSD you wouldn't need to duplicate anymore.

Load times for next-gen games aren't always going to be that fast.

Heck, an optimized Gears 5 on the XSX takes ~8 seconds to load.

Investing into this SSD was as worth it as investing into Kinect. A disaster.

As games get bigger and more complex, you know what else will be happening? Even lower resolution, lower graphical details and most certainly sub 30fps gaming yet again. All thanks to Sony for focusing on an SSD instead of what matters most, the cpu/gpu.

It was another pointless investment like VR and PlayStation Vue. Sony could have used that money to make their console powerful, boost its cloud gaming platform or stay in the handheld/remote play market. They have made a lot of poor decisions lately.

Huh,

if they had invested in better performance those games would run faster and still benefit from speeds from less custom SSD and IO?

I’m going to go with a “No” for now. I think load times are going to be relatively fast enough for Xbox Series X|S and probably won’t see any great difference on the PS5. Would have rather had them boost the performance of the system elsewhere. We’ll see though.

@tdkmillsy:

18% more power vs 120% faster loading + wifi 6 + USB C + Haptic feeback + rechargeable battery.

Is not just power or ssd speed the PS5 has several more perks over the series X,and judging from the controller reception i think the biggest difference would not be graphics at all.

Rechargeable battery that made me laugh.

How exactly will Wifi 6 and usb c help a game running locally from the internal hard drive?

How will wifi 6 help over wifi 5 when the average broadband speed in uk is 64mb? Its not like we have mansions to live in.

Its not like the series X doesn't have its own perks.

Poll kind of shows your on your own on this one.

Take all your images and videos put them on 50" screen, sit 10 feet away and honestly say there is a difference that would make you choose a console over another. Even sat 6 feet away the differences wont be enough.

Cost, Games, features, friends and multiplayer will be the deciding factor when the differences are so slim. In fact they will always be the difference, the Wii selling more than the 360/PS3 shows that.

The reason the PS4 will sell better early on is because the price is less and Microsoft haven't shown enough of what the Kinect and OS can do. Once the prices are the same the resolution differences alone wont be enough to remain on top. If they bring out the games they keep promising and not hiding behind indies then they may remain on top. But even then a 60/40 or even 70/30 split still means millions of sold consoles for Xbox One. With the price being more it can only mean less kids on multiplayer games also :)

900p vs 1080p is what I expected for every game with same FPS. Close enough for normal people to not give a monkeys.

If you where that bothered about resolution/fps of multiplats you would get a PC.

@tdkmillsy said:

PS4 better GPU shock horror, real world its a 180p resolution difference in some games and takes an expert to point out the difference.

I am going to let this here and slowly walk away.

Sony did a good choice as confirmed by you, since you can't tell 40% more power from 10 feets hell even from 6 feets, so how in hell would you notice 18%.

In no way but surely will make the PS5 had further range in wifi and USB C doesn't even need explanation, charge faster is better.

Wifi 6 is not just speed is also RANGE.

Which perks the series X has over the PS5?

Oh because a poll here equal the reality outside this site.🤣

Is pathetic seeing you desperate trying to push power after the totally shitty posted i just quoted from you downplaying the PS4 gap.

Just so you know i don't care about that 18% power because you showed me how just seating from 10 feet away will make that gap non existent.🤣🤣🤣

Ill awaits your usual spin or your total silence judging by how you left the thread.

One is noticable(load times), one isn't(slightly better resolution). Small load times from the SSD is the most exciting thing about next gen. Once DF releases videos and if there's a big difference in graphics, I may change my mind.

Based on what we've seen? No, probably not. However, based on theoretical performance, it's exciting to think about the handful of experiences that will truly use it in a new way that would stumble on traditional SSD hardware. As a PC gamer, I'm never impressed by console hardware in a brute force sense. BUT I am always on the look-out for creative ways it can be used. From VMUs to motion sensors and haptic feedback, I get excited when consoles bring something fresh to the table, that they can do well because devs build games around those features. This is why I like the Switch more than the PS4. It's simply a more interesting and useful addition to my gaming hardware toolbox. All that is to say - eh, in theory I could be more impressed by a creative all-in use of the PS5's SSD than some extra pixels

As long as it can hit a solid 60 fps with no compromises-

....oh wait....

C'mon it's a $500 console.

All I want is for exclusives to **** off so I can play games on better hardware.

This has to be one of your funniest meltdowns in a while.

If someone doesn't agree with you in here (even if they are a cow) they are not in the real world. Tell that to the 19 people who said they should have focused on power.

Be 100% honest now, swear on something important have you voted yes to the poll more than once using the alts you have. (Before you accuse me I don't have other alts and would be happy to swear on anything to that affect.)

If you think Wifi 6, battery and usb c are so great, why don't you start your own poll and see if was worth investing in all that instead of stuff that actually affects the gaming. But then again whats the point people on here don't count because they are not in the real world.

It's maybe a second shorter load time in exchange for an overall poorer gaming experience. You be the judge. The improvements of one SSD over another SSD are going to be unnoticeable when compared to the differences in other hardware.

I do think we can use a bit of an update from the XBO controller as the baseline that we design games for. The Xbox controller has been holding back gaming for over a decade now as both Playstation and Nintendo have implemented some form of motion controls for 12-13 years now.

A NVME vs SSD is basically a $10-20 difference for the same size with 4-6x the speed on PC.

So no... I would not chose that.

Not to mention that NVME are wire free installations.

Point me to a 2tb Gen 4 NVME, the one that's used and is only compatible with the two consoles, that's the same price as a 2tb Sata 3 SSD
