Poll Is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild the greatest launch game of all time? (90 votes)

Yes 52%
No (Please Share Answer) 48%

So, this is an interesting question, and I'd like it if you thought about itbefore you answered- is The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild the best, the greatest, launch game of all time?

Before you jump in and say yes, here are some notable launch games through the ages:

  • Super Mario World (SNES)
  • Virtua Fighter (Saturn)
  • Super Mario 64 (N64)
  • SoulCalibur (Dreamcast)
  • Sonic Adventure (Dreamcast)
  • Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (Wii)
  • Wii Sports (Wii)

@charizard1605 A lot of people really don't know anything about Nintendo's past launch titles. I think you should add this picture in your original post

EDIT: The Famicom launch in 1983 had 3 games, the North American launch had more games compared.

**** no against Super Mario World
Yeah over Virtua Fighter 1
Probably not over Mario 64 as a game, definitely not in terms of impact
Yes over Soul Calibur, Soul Calibur is secretly scrubby, and that goes back to the first game
Yes over Sonic Adventure, the Sonic Adventure games are gutter trash
Yes over Halo: CE, but I doubt it'll be as influential or as impactful
Yes over Wii Sports n Twilight Princess

It's a relevant question about a relevant games related topic on a forum about games. Not only that, but the OP itself doesn't take any pro-BotW stance, and even encourages voting against it.

Don't let that get in the way of your relentless antagonization and contrarian posting habits, though.

The good thing about being on a forum is that no one forces you to click on a thread you don't feel like reading. If 'BotW circle jerks' annoy you so much... don't enter them?

SMB, SMW, and SM64 are some crazy tough acts to follow. Each of those games were a much bigger deal at the time. I was more on the outside looking in when it came to SM64, but the weight that game carried with the mindshare of gamers can't be denied. SMW, you guys already know. SMB was a shockwave throughout the industry, the NES could have been successful with that game alone.

Edit: I guess I'd say that BotW does stand alongside the greats. It's already selling units, it's already won gamers over, and it will almost definitely remain among the best games on the Switch. Who knows it might remain the best game on the Switch. But it doesn't eclipse the greatest release titles.

Super Mario 64 was better. Zelda isn't a true launch title, it's a port of a Wii U game. It doesn't even utilize the Switch features all that much. Super Mario 64 was an excellent showcase for the N64.

It certainly appears to be one of the top launch titles ever. I haven't played it, but I would be ready to say it's one of the best open world game at launch, if not the best.

That's as far as I would go though....Even if I play it later and decide it is incredible, the best open world game, I would not say it's the best launch game ever, personally speaking, because now we've expanded the amount of variables to consider to an insane amount.

Again, it comes down to personal preference, some people do not care for this type of game, and for them Halo is the best launch game ever. Best-of-the-Best attribute, to me, is a term I use within a very specific genre and type of game. It becomes much easier to make that claim. I'd stick with just "best open world game at launch", not saying it is, just that it appears to be at this time. There aren't that many open world games that came out at launch, as far as I remember.

But to add to the conversation, I don't think there is a clear "greatest launch" of all time game. As listed in the OP, many games succeeded in promoting the launch system. Picking the greatest launch game ever would need clear criteria(s). Picking anything as the greatest of all time is rather nonsensical but thats for another day.

Yeah, the criteria is important.

Like personally, as far as just being a great game, I'd absolutely put BotW up there with the rest of them. Possibly better, I'd only have a hard time choosing between it and SMW.

But if we're talking about impact, both SMB and SM64 wipe the floor with it. Probably Halo as well.

And if we're talking about strictly moving units, plenty of launch games have an upper hand there, Wii Sports included.

Edit: I suppose I'm jumping the gun here regarding impact and unit sales with BotW. We'll have to wait and see. I just doubt it will be as earth shaking as previous launch titles in those aspects.

i think it's breath of the wild.

but i was like 15 when mario 64 came out and it was my first time playing in a 3D environment.

i'll have to give the nod to mario 64 for nostalgia.

I'd give it to Super Mario World or Mario 64 because they were something that you couldn't play anywhere else and demonstrated the capabilities of the systems; and even to wii sports for commercial success.

In terms of quality it's definitely up there with the best, it's probably a top 5 of all time game for me. It loses some points as a true launch title since it also launched on Wii U.

Halo CE. That game made the Xbox brand, and it converted me and so many others into Xbox owners. There was literally no reason to get it otherwise, well unless you're going to sit there and pretend that you loved NFL Fever and Fuzion Frenzy enough to get it in year one. Nothing comes close, imo.

Naw, this was suppose to be just for the Wii U, and it's on the Wii U too, so I can't really count this as a launch game. But it's a really good game though that Wii U owners and Switch owners could enjoy.

From the generations i've part off of, Halo: CE was the best launch game ever. I remember playing that game on the first week of the Xbox launch and i was blown away how amazing the god rays looked through trees. One of my most memorable co-op moments as well.

It is certainly a system seller, but definitely not the best launch game. Mario 64 was a revolutionary game at the time and was incredible. Breath Of The Wild is mostly more of what we have seen in other open world games and will not be remembered as a true classic when all the overrated hype wears off and people come to their senses. Same goes for Uncharted 4.

Nope. Nintendo and Zelda are established for decades at this point.

Super Mario Bros NES is the greatest imo with Halo CE coming in second. These games were largely responsible for putting these before then unknown gaming products and companies on the map.

No.

Looking at it objectively, Super Mario 64 has to be the greatest launch game of all time. Not only was it a great game, but it was also a revolutionary game that set the blueprint for 3D game design. Breath of the Wild is a great game, but I wouldn't call it revolutionary like I would Super Mario 64.

And looking at it personally, my favorite launch game of all time is probably Super Mario World.

That's because it is a Wii U game...Nintendo better NOT count this as the Switchy Zelda game..meaning we don't get anymore Zelda game (until their next game system)...except for DLCs for BotW..cause that would suck. :P

Zelda took what the industry has been doing for years and slapped Zelda paint on it. Halo reshaped the entire gaming industry. Super Mario World is still unrivaled as a platformer. So nah, Zelda ain't the greatest launch game of all time.

Super Mario 64 is still the greatest

BoTW was intentionally delayed multiple times from coming out on the Wii U so it could be a Switch launch title, thats a big asterisk if you ask me. Super Mario 64 was completely impossible on the previous console, that adds to its greatness

For me personally? Yes, BotW is probably my favorite game to launch with a console, followed closely by Luigi's Mansion.

However, I think for shear impact on the industry, I don't think you can ever top Mario 64.

I think it is. It took an already quality series an exploded it in every direction against all expectations. Mario 64 didn't have as much pressure.

As the absolute pinnacle of the open world genre IMHO, I'd say it is. This is what you get with talent and hard work over technical capability.

I still cannot believe that this game was created.

Going to be really edgy and snowflakey and say Sonic The Hedgehog, since it pretty much relaunched the Genesis. judged on marketing it was sort of a genius move.

Zelda's Zelda, you know everyone will get hyped. Sonic came from nowhere for a console that was getting hammered.

You know what? I'm gonna say Soul Calibur. It was the first time a console port outclassed its arcade counterpart in every single way, and it remained a Dreamcast exclusive for almost an entire decade.

It's a four way tie between Mario 64, Sonic Adventure, Halo, and Breath of the Wild.

And here are two underrated launch games: Resistance Fall of Man and Metal Gear Acid.

Dunno about the "all time" part, but it is has been the best one in years.
