This analysis is flawed, for example his number 5 means little to the nongamer/casual, because they aren't going to plunk down $600 for a Blu-ray player, and have no interest in 360/PS3 games, otherwise they would be gamers already

The Wiimote won't be duplcated this gen, in addition addons usually fail, in addition thanks to Wii sales the Devs are being forced to put resources to Wii game development in order to make money

The Wii may not win but it sure as hell aint going to fail. Many of those reasons are very flawed.

The way I see it, there are three logical ways of looking at the Wii's future based on its situation.

1. Like the article says, the Wii could be doomed due to those reasons.
2. The Wii could endure great success when developers support it after its great sales. There could be a lot of exclusive games made for the Wii because of its hardware both simple and deep.
3. The Wii could be a dumping grounds for simplistic party games and fun sports games due to motion control and still sell, but to a lesser extent in the future.

Based on what I've seen and researched in upcoming news and games, I tend to think number two, but you never know...

You know I've thought about this too. The Wii has some great potiential but right now that's all it really has going for it. In a perfect world 3rd parties would be excited to capitalize on the systems strengths but realistically speaking most developer are content to give us enchanced remixes of the same stuff we have been playing for years. Nintendo while being a strong first party developer has a particularly bad habit of give you what they think you should have instead of what you actually want. They also take forever and a day to develope games. For example wouldn't a sequel to Wii sports be nice with deeper gameplay and an easily accessible online arena. I mean they have the foundation in that glorified tech demo we all accept as a game on its good merits. How hard will it be to give us something like that maybe addsa few more solid sports in there like say fencing or kendo. You think we will get that... Seriously look at the past. More than likely we will get innodated with mascot driven crud and kiddie games only to be followed up by some kind of off the wall gardening game or something to that effect. They are out of touch with gamers and don't seem to understand that while peaking the interest of the masses is important taking care of the gamer (inority as we may be}is vital to a system's survival because when all the buzz of a fad fades gamers are the ones that sell and hype your product because they have a passion for it. Another thing why aren't they talking up their systems ability to use Orb!? Sheesh Nintendo its one thing to sell a mobile baby sitter with some cute games for the parents but its another to compete for marketshare with two monsters like Microsoft and Sony. I hope Nintendo surprises me I really like my Wii but more than likely the system won't have the apps we want to play until its on its deathbed.

Thats a pretty big chance then.

dont act like because the ds is doing well now that it wasnt seen as an underdog to the psp, with no chance of winning. just because the ds pulled it out doesnt mean the wii is a lock.

Lots of "may"s and "could"s, as usual.

Really, it's an argument I heard right after E3.  Apparently, people are still hanging on to it.

Here's some counter points!  Yay opinions.

Great first party titles, but others not so much...

The main arguement presented is that 3rd parties will do half-assed games for the Wii.  Why?  Because the hardware is weak, and they'll spend too much resources with the wii-mote.  Another point of argument was that developers do not want to take a risk on the Wii.

Thing is, that arguement could be made with any console.  What makes a game great for any console or not is not going to rely on hardware.  It relies on an idea, a good idea.  It relies on people embracing the idea.  You could take any great game out there today or in the past, and if you remove the fans, the people who made it great in the end, you just have another piece of software.

Original "unique controller" content is hard to produce

No one is forcing developers to make all games utilize motion sensing.  In the DS comparsion made, the same is true.  Not all DS games use or need the touch screen.  There is a difference between building a game, and building a game around motion sensing.  For games to be entertaining they need to be fun.  If it uses motion sensing then that's great.

Motion controller may be duplicated

This is probably inevitable.  The question is how strong is Nintendo's patients on the Wiimote.  Sony already has some motion sensing, but as we all know, it pales in comparasion to the Wiimote.  If motion sensing is going to be part of the future, then Nintendo has a huge head-start.

Possible constraints on game design

This argument is a reword of the "unique controller" argument.  If people don't have a good idea, they shouldn't make a game.

Fewer "value added features"

Does this person even have a Wii?  Oh noes, it doesn't play movies.  Though the Wii Channels has a lot of value added features.  The lower cost of the Wii was the trade-off for not including extra features.

Risky gamble on expanding the market

The main arguement here is either that casual people are too lazy, or too stupid to be a console gamer.  That they can't keep track of game releases, or will be distracted playing solitare.  I can't really argue against opinion, since if a person can wander into the electronics section to get a Wii, they can certainly wander back into th electronic section from time to time and see if they find a game that grabs them.

No you're right, its not a lock, but thanks to the right moves of Nintendo, coupled with the missteps of its competitors, Ninty has a great chance with the Wii

It's kind of like he picked out the most negative scenarios he could think of for the Wii. In reality, Nintendo has tried something completely different and it's working like a charm. At the very least, it looks set to sell a lot more than the Gamecube, which is some kind of success. I can't say it's my favourite console, but you have to admit, Nintendo has made a smart move.

The wii is on fire right now I have a feeling that they will fizzle out with lack of third party support because third partys will put out crappy games for the wii just to make a quick buck .

This article is so old and was written before the Wii was even released, so it is irrelevant.

You lied. This isn't a good read at all. He gives flawed logic from the beginning with the reasons for success, and goes on with even more flawed logic with the points about why it could fail.

But is the same thing all over again this gen wii have less power so it seems alot of dev doesent care to port games to the wii

and if they do port the games they make a bad job . Look how many games that are coming to both PS3 and xbox360 but not to the wii. That will hurt the wii sales in the future.

PS games were known for its great third party(FF, MGS). It just shows how lazy the 3rd party devs are in making or developing games for Wii. Look at the first party games of Nintendo it always sold more and has very good quality.
