For the last time Beta didn't lose, Sony made more money off Beta than VHS ever did. Beta is still being used today all over the world.

oh and also......VHS won because "the whole product" did what people wanted at a price they were willing to pay. And when people use the VHS v Beta analogy, they are not indicating a market failure but their own ignorance..and plus I never saw a beta in any video stores...IN MY LIFE

Heck, Betamax was supported by the company in Japan nearly into the new millenium, if PS3 gets that much support I would consider it a good thing.

To all you kids out there. The television and broadcasting industry spends millions upon millions of dollars on Beta SP, DigiBeta and other Beta related products every year. This is not just Japan or American, this is the whole world. The word Beta means SD broadcasting period, all SD broadcasting is recorded, archived and stored on BETA. Sony's immense wealth is partially attributed to the worlds adoption of their Beta technology.

Only ignorant kids use Beta losing as an analogy for Sony's PS3, because if PS3 is Beta then Sony hasn't lost they've secured the biggest market in history.

P.S Beta is still being used today all over the world, news flash distribution of recording medium goes far beyond the average WallMart and Blockbuster.

Who cares about target audience, it's all about how much money you make in the end and Beta made Sony buckets of money every minute from every part of the globe. Every time a news reporter straps on that camera guess what it's Beta

Yeah I went a little too far with it too. I just get so fed up of people always using Sony and Beta as symbols of failure when it's just so wrong. Much of Sony's wealth is attributed to Beta.

Beta is flop, give up man....from wiki

  • In a 1989 episode of the situation comedyMarried... with Children, the Bundys were described as "the last family on earth with Beta"; a character had to cross state lines to get a tape from "Bob's Betas and Bell-bottoms", and was only able to rent Oh Heavenly Dog.[4]
  • In the 1990 novel Good Omens, a 17th-century book of prophecies includes the warning "Do Notte Buye Betamacks".[5]
  • The format appeared in some episodes of The Simpsons
    • In a 1992 episode, Snake steals a VCR, but on inspecting it exclaims "Oh no, Beta!"[6]
    • In a 2003 episode, Homer is at the local garbage dump, and walks past a box of betamax tapes that had been left at the dump.[7]
    • The local video-rental store in Springfield has been known as 'VHS Village' with a subtext saying 'formerly Beta Barn'.
  • In an episode of Futurama, Mom says that she won't be around forever and a talking Betamax player says, "Oh shush," in response.[8]
  • In an episode of the television series Cowboy Bebop, two of the main characters, Spike and Jet, must go out in search of a Beta player in an ancient history museum in order to view a mysterious beta cassette tape they received in the mail. Upon returning with a player, they woefully discover that they had found a VHS player, not Betamax.

You are right about beta and how its still making sony money but I think its time to just let this one go. You know what really happened and so do I, but they just aren't going to get it. If you guys wanted to make a point, minidisc or laser disc would have been far better examples as they just died horrible, horrible deaths.

All the stock footage you see on the news typically is stored on beta tapes. Beta never won the consumer market due to Sony restricting too much content.

Well when some uninformed kid decides to pick Beta as an analogyfor Sony'sfailure then it's up to us as adults to point them the right direction. The bottom line is Beta is and always was a success in terms of profitability and should stop being used as a Sony's one great failure example, if people wanna point out a failures then point out Minidisk or Laser Disk. It's just annoying hearing about Beta mentioned everytime the PS3 is being put down. Beta made more money than VHS and thats something Sony should be proud of.

do the numbers next too my name not suggest that im in my 30's and i too remember the likes of laser disk (i still have appocalipse now, but no player sadly). and i also remember the sony mini disk vs philips DCC (digital compact casset) war which sony actualy won. it was just bad timing for them that the whole mp3/ipod thing kicked off and burried both of them.

i will admit im wrong on the money betamax made over vhs if you can show me some figures too support that.

im just of too blockbuster now to rent some betamax movies....

Einstein the professional media industry spends more money on recording mediums than the consumers. Beta is the broadcast standard and has been for the last 25 years. You do the math
