Is the PS3 really that far behind the 360?

This may have been discussed, so I'm sorry if I am repeating, but i never really looked at sales but, from the way 360 fanboys went on about it, I had assumed the 360 was totally dominating the ps3 in sales.. however, according to wiki,

PS3 - 21 Million Worldwide

360 - 27 Million

21 Million is LOADS!!!Especially considering its cost.

So, taking into account the 360 was released a year early and had no competition, isn't this situation somewhat expected, even by sony?

Also, if you look at sales year by year of each consoles life, hasn't the ps3 outsold the 360?

EDIT: Just noticed that the PS3 fig comes from late 2008 whilst the 360 one from 2009. So the PS3 must have more than 21 million

Base system 80 GB - $300

160 GB bundled with Uncharted - $400

So we should trust wikipedia over VGchartz why?

360-29.63 million sold world wide

ps3-21.53 million sold world wide

Another thing i noticed is how miniscule and unimportant japan is in the grand scheme of international sales with 8 million wii, 3 million ps3, and 1 million 360 in japan yet the japanese devs continue to put japan first in every way, releases, extras, quality...ect

because its their country. american devs release all their games in america first. also, lots of Japanese devs have started making western games, RE5, Lost Planet, Dead Rising, Bionic Commando, Dark Void, Quantum Theory, Metriod now FPS, Square Enix purchasing Eidos. All these are just for the western audience.

yeah, M$ had an entire year's head start with zero competition from the Wii or PS3 yet the 360 only has a lead of about 7 million consoles over the PS3. The PS3 sold well over 10 million consoles in 2008 just like the 360 despite costing twice as much as the 360 and despite 2008 being one of the worst economic holiday seasons for retail in a loooooong time. A lead of 7 million is laughable given how cheap the 360 is and the year long head start with zero competition from the Wii or PS3. That's less than the PS3 sells in any given year even with competition from Wii and 360 and with a huge price tag.

Too bad Sony can't afford a price cut. It's been two years and Sony still isn't making money off each console sold yet. Hell, Microsoft starting making profit off each Xbox 360 sold in late 2006; it took Microsoft less than a year to bring manufacturing costs down to acceptable levels. Sony has yet to do this.

M$' entire xbox division didn't turn a profit until 2008. We're talking the entire department from the moment money was allocated to start up the Xbox project.

And in doing that, they shot themselves in the foot in the long run. Why? Because those cheap 360s are exactly that - CHEAP. I've had so many problems with mine already and it's only a year old. I'm sure youve all heard the typical problems with 360s, and they're quite common. All I will say is that this is my first M$ console and I'm really disappointed with it. I don't think I'll ever buy another M$ console due to the bad experience Ive had with 360 and I'm sure there are a ton of others just like me. Red Ring of Death. Extremely noisy fan. Over heating problems. XBL problems in Canada. Games shutting off in the middle of playing so that I could "clean the disc". So many faulty 360 systems out there that had to be returned... Do you think ppl like me will continue buying Xbox systems? A few will. But I (and many others) sure as hell will not.

ps3 is technologically behind xbox360. Some of the global illumination effects you might have seen in years past at SIGGRAPH have been put into motion on the Xbox 360 GPU in real time. For the most part, global illumination is necessary to render a real world picture quality 3D scene. The Xbox 360 also makes using curved surfaces possible in-game, meaning that it can calculate the polygons from the proper curved surface math in order to draw it on your screen "correctly." Much in line with this is the ability to do high order surface deformation. Moreover, if you are familiar with high order surfaces, you are likely familiar with what gamers and hardware enthusiasts commonly refer to as "LOD" or Level of Detail. Mr. Feldstein shared with us that the Xbox 360 GPU has some "really novel LOD schemes." Therefore, it appears as if the days of pentagonal shaped wheels on the cars in the distance in new Grand Theft Auto titles is a thing of the past

oh, well, as long as your launch 360 is okay, we can ignore the other ~30% of people who have bought a 360 and had major problems.

But if we're to go by VGChartz (hey, there's no one else?) then the gap is only getting bigger. I don't really care though.

yep, so long as they don't get any problems other than RROD in the last 2 years of the 3 year warranty and so long as RROD and E74 cease to exist after 3 years from the date of purchase, they're all good.

Then how come ps3 exclusives look better than 360 exclusives. face it... the 360 has done nothing new for ages. also, we all know the ps3 utilises the cell to handle certain gpu work... ps3 is technologically behind xbox360. Some of the global illumination effects you might have seen in years past at SIGGRAPH have been put into motion on the Xbox 360 GPU in real time. WOW thats awesome you mean they just started doing that? this really makes any difference since they've been doing it since day one and just started this generation making any sort of effort on a western scale then you have the fact they still aren't releaseing the exclusive games, or content over here, Sorry no comparing western devs to eastern is just silly because western devs don't have a misguided country honor and near xenophobia complex as well as superiority complex like the japanese do which is why we don't get quite a few games over here even though america is the source of about 50% of their sales in systems and games, why we don't get that extra bit of work they are willing to do for their own people but not foreigners.
