bah, nitpick nitpick, i was quoting the buddy who was talking about the 90,000, i had already read your post about the math.
and yes, the year head start does matter when talking about overall sales figures. 6 million unit lead is huge. everyone knows that 360 is a more popular console for several reasons. but to say that PS3 is not catching up is folly..
Look closer than that though. This is a debate about Wii vs PS3 sales. Clearly this holiday season is leaning towards Wii and PS3 so far. Microsoft not releasing their numbers is circumstantial evidence of this. In a market largely based on gifting and holiday sales, its important that a system does well during this time.
There is another reason for concern here. If PS3 starts to outsell the 360 on a more constant basis, we may see a pricedrop on the 360, which will mean a pricedrop for PS3 close behind, while this is good for the consumer, it is bad for the industry. Higher prices means higher profits means higher game budgets means higher game quality.
Currently, the ideal market situation for the 3 consoles would be with the Wii leading by a health margin (not a massive one), with the PS3 and 360 battling it out for 2-3. If the 360 begins to outsell the PS3, or vise versa, the market comes away the worse for wear...

This actually isn't true. Also, I nit pick when people are going out of there way to be disruptive and rude. Subraction of numbers is not something that should be so difficult to get right.
Now, a 360 pricedrop will not be followed by a PS3 price drop right away if Sony is still making good money and selling well. It will only happen when Sony either runs the course of its curent price or significantly faulters sometime in the future. You drop your price for your benefit, not to counter your competitors.
As for being bad for the industry not at all, primarily, the majority of sales are made in the $200 range. The only companies that take a hit are first parties, third parties have a better chance of selling more software on cheaper hardware. As for the ideal way the market should be, in complete honesty, it doesn't matter. For publishers the ideal would have been if Sony just dominated. The Wii leading right now does most of the top publishers no good since they don't put big selling games on it.
