The sales argument is basically more sales = better games on that system, however I see little evidence of this. The Wii has sold what 40 mil, yet its not exactly swimming in AAA titles and certainly is not pwning the 360 and PS3 in terms of games.

The same can be said 360 vs PS3: infact it could be argued that with all the upcoming titles in the next year the PS3 is infact ahead in terms of games although it lags behind in sales.

In conclusion, unless I have overlooked a key point I would argue that the sales argument is not relevent.

Thoughts?

i think they do matter, more sales= more dev interest, and you can't say the ps3 has it in the bag for games this year, that's an opinion, and MS have not yet announced all there games for this year, it's way to early to say who's going to win in terms of games. the bottom line is Devs make more money on the console which is selling the most and a lot of devs are pulling ou from making there games on the ps3 or are releasing there titles later on the ps3, because games don't sell enough on the ps3 to justify the development recources/costs, basically more console sales = more game sales=more profit for developers=more games made on that platform

Yes but like my examples there is really no difference in game quality between the systems although the sales are quite different. There are twice the number of Wiis for example compared to the PS3 but are there twice the amount of good games on the wii compared to the PS3 I would argue not.

Yeah, however, it's not even the same sales difference.

The 360's lead isn't impressive, especially considering the 1 year no competition head start it got (I think the 360 leads in the 6 million range? It's unclear).

When all is said and done, both systems will probably be the same in a few years.

The PS2 vs. Xbox, which you brought up, was crazy. The PS2 had outsold the Xbox by more than 120 million units. That's nuts.

Everybody? Bad idea to make blanket statements like that.

I'm not sure the sales argument is truly valid at this time, since the target audiences are different between the 360/PS3 and Nintendo. So far this gen, MS and SOny have had little interest in expanding their target consumer audience past the adult gamers who prefer for mature titles, RPGS, FPS and action games. Nintendo by offer less intense experiences, more family friendly games, and trying to be more inclusive with the motion controller is trying to expand financially, but also to bring videos games to new generations. Sometimes it looks like MS and Sony are just catering to the established gamers.

I loathe the terms "hardcore" and "casual", but I think aspects of those fit into this argument.

It's not the end-all be-all, but you can't deny that it's a factor. Proof: all the winning console of previous gens.

It isn't relevant. The Xbox 360 had a head start which means they sold more consoles. And as said before, the ps3 isnt even that far behind. Ofcourse if there is more of a console that people have, more people will buy games for it. When they use sales with a console that's been out a year longer, its kind of saying as you get older you don't get any smarter. Lets say the Xbox 360 is a 10 year old and the ps3 is a 9 year old. Isn't it more common that the older age will be smarter or have more sales?
