Is the Vita dead?

Recently purchased a Vita with Killzone Mercenary looking forward there is bunch of games releasing even in 2017 but I have been reading some conflicting reports online that Sony pulled the plug on the Vita. Anyone know is the online community still active for any of the games for the system? Or dead ?

Handhelds like the vita will never die.

Its basically superior to the psp in everyway so its never going to die unless sony makes a better one it will be a great legacy platform.

Go to a store and look at the game shelf and tell me if it's dead or not, the answer is yes.

Wtf is a Vita, never seen one. I went to my retail store to ask and they said they don't sell nothing called Vita.

It's pretty much dead unless you like a few JRPGs here and there. I only use Vita for PS1 and Indie games.

Whats a vita?

Sony has discontinued 1st party support for the system. And other than playing PS1, PSP, and Japanese based games. The Vita doesn't offer much else nowadays for gaming.

Once Nintendo secured Monster Hunter exclusives. The Vita just didn't have a killer title to move a significant amount of units. And that's key early on to build a nice install base. So developers can be convinced to make games for said system. Still surprising that it still selling a decent amount of units, to not be discontinued or thrown in clearance. But it will take a miracle to really bring life to the Vita.

@jak42: Capcom stated they picked 3DS cause Vitas sales were so bad. Nintendo didn't even pay them to become exclusive. Vita was that much of a joke.

Sony was outclassed by Nintendo when it came to the latest battle in handhelds. Near seemed to mimic street pass and it was a disaster IMO. The support was not healthy. About the only pro I found with the Vita was how comfortable it was when being used.

its the worst selling system of the gen. even the wiiu outsold it at double the price.

@iandizion713: I followed those reports on MH back in 2011, as did others on another forum. Sales were not the reason given at the time of Vita's first year. It was unsure, we don't know, and no plans to bring MH to Vita. But certainly not Vita sales. Just people at Capcom dodging questions.

@jak42: True, but after Vitas sales disaster, Capcom made an announcement that they would not be releasing on Vita. Same way companies do Wii U.

still gets Japan support. Just got trails of cold steel recently.

It has been confirmed dead by many for a couple of years now. Yet somehow we get threads like this every once in while. It is dead to the mainstream gamers, but still kicking for niche games.

In Japan, its still alive, getting new games constantly.
But outside of Japan, its basically dead. While it still gets some games, its very, very little.
So if you are expecting for new games to be released for it, I would recommend not putting any hopes up. While there are some great games for the Vita currently, I wouldnt put any expectations for future releases, unless you import games from Japan.

Well if you're happy with it's current library, it'll be "alive" to you :P

Ya it is, Sony has stopped paying Gamestop to display vita games now. If I want any, I usually have to talk to the person behind the counter because they keep all the games back there now

It continually receives more games than the 3DS, so sure, it's dead.

Dead for Americans maybe. I still see new Japanese RPG on it and some indies every month

PSV was dead to me when they stopped western AAA support. I haven't bought a game for it in over two years.

i dont think sony even mentions it anymore in any event they do.

psp had the advantage at the time since the smartphone market didn't exist. The market destroyed everything for portables. 3DS is barely scraping by as it is.

Spec wise and potentially speaking, the Vita mops the floor with PSP. It could have been a monster! But you know the story. PS Vita offers ps3 quality games graphically and in gameplay, PSP wasn't even close to ps2 specs! And no 2nd joystick!

Sure mobile may have dented dedicated handheld gaming devices, but you can't fault PSP for that. Hell Sony didn't do Vita any favors by selling overpriced memory cards. They were digging it's own grave with that move.

Its about games and PSP delivered in that while Vita's library is a joke.

Seriously, you'll get into a game here and there but, no its weak. If ppl hat MS for abandoning "core" *WTF* in 2009; then Sony are guilty with PS Vita. I don't give a fuk what J*P devs do with it. KZM was the last great, console like experience on it.

The Vita was recently hacked to allow it to play pirated Vita games so if anything it will open the flood gate to pirates.

I honestly would like to see a Vita successor. But one that isn't all too fancy. Made largely with off the shelf components to bring down R and D costs. And is priced at $150 for launch.

I think at that price point with actual controls. A Vita successor could find a nice place in the market. Even if lifetime sales are 30-35 million, that's not bad. After all, the current Vita is defying the odds of losing 1st party support. Has a small install base. And is making enough money to justify not being discontinued 4 years after release.

Vita has been dead outside of Japanese support for a couple years now. Most retail stores have either eliminated the Vita section or downsized it to a small endcap.

That being said, if you love RPGs/imports its a great system.

why risk it at this point, how long before the pull the online support?

The screen is way better it feels way fancier than the psp (has a heavier build quality) Way more features all over it.

It can play all psp games digitally and some ps2 games it just plays more games overall than the psp.

It may be dead but you can play a lot of great PSP games on it still.

Yeah would i play psp games on a worse screen when PS Vita plays those any they just look better on the vita?

PS Vita is just pure upgrade to play on theres just no reason to not sell a psp and get the vita imo.

It's not Vita's fault the library is mostly anime games, Sony gave up on it too quickly! The only Uncharted game we got on it was one without Naughty Dog! Killzone was the only real treat they actually put a lot of effort in! We didn't even get a Last of Us game or Twisted Metal, God of War, or even a Heavy Rain spinoff!

If Nintendo had it, I guarantee you it would've taken over the mobile market too! They shoved 3DS and WiiU down everyone's throats until people eventually started paying attention. Now those guys know how to market!

Indeed thats all we people need to know. The worst SONY system ever that Wii U outsold and they are ashamed of showing on events , has double the amount of games Wii U can offer. Thats Nintendo for you.

Dang, Vita is sad, gets more games than Wii U, has been out much longer, and still sold worst. No wonder Sony is ashamed and abandoned it. Id be butthurt too.
