Is the Wii U a replacement, or just a next generation system?

I was doing some research, and I heard the PS4 is not to far off. Some people think a year after the Wii U comes out.

Which leads me to believe that the Wii U, PS4, and the next X-Box system and PS Vita and 3DS are the next generation consoles.

Replacing the Wii, PS3, X-Box 360, PSP, and Nintendo DS.

I thought it would be the PS3, XBox 360, and Wii U for 4-5 years. But I guess I was wrong.

but we know wiiU comes out next year....so next gen starts in summer(hopefully) 2012

Wii U is the successor to the Wii hence it's a next-gen system. Hardware power alone does not determine what is next-gen or not.

It's next gen. End of story.

Of course not, Nintendo decided to have fun and spent millions of dollars creating a new Wii with a funny controller....

It looks like it's a replacement to the wii, obviously. The only problem with it is that it is just too complex, just like the Wii. Because of this, it will also fail to garner any serious 3rd party support, leaving gamers with pretty much just Zelda, Metroid, and Mario all over again. People don't want gimmicks. They want tried and true controllers, great 3rd party games, and great Nintendo franchises. It seems like Nintendo forgot all the lessons it learned winning the SNES/GENESIS battle.

Next gen system. The only one I plan on owning too.

Actually, "next gen" started with the 3DS. Which is an 8th generation console.

That's not how things work though, next gen overall is next gen whether it counts handhelds or consoles. 3DS started next gen, and the Wii U and Vita will follow soon.

It could be viewed either way, and I get what you're saying, but I'd just rather look at next gen as THE next gen, not a few different next gens.
