With Mass Effect 2 easily becoming the most overhyped game of 2010, im curious to know if everyone thinks it will be thejuggernaut people are hyping it to be or if some of you actually have low expectations for this game......... is the fact that this game could fail even a reality?!

Obviously any game could fail, but anyone who has seen or heard of Mass Effect 2 can tell you that the possibility of this game's failure is hard to see.

What are your thoughts on the reality of Mass Effect 2?

(personally.....i think it will GOTY 2010 no questions asked)

No way. It'll probably be much better than the first one and score AAA for both the PC and 360 versions. As for GOTY, its too early to tell, I mean, we're only one day into 2010...

We are one day into 2010 and you are predicting GOTY and the most over hyped game of the year? A year that has a new Halo game coming out?

I think you are being a bit premature.

Well yes, it would. I mean, Bioware has been pretty hush about many of the gameplay changes with this game. I haven't even seen enough media to know what they changed and what they fixed. If the game still has the same shortcommings as the first (lackluster main story arc and very poor side quests), then I could see it flopping.

ME2 is hardly the most hyped game of 2010, infact i think its pretty underhyped for a game of its magnituted (but that probably has to do with it being multiplat from day 1 this time).

To answer the question, yes. I dont think theres anyway its going to fail in terms of review scores, games like this score high regardless. But after the honeymoon period, i could see it failing to meet expectations. The main area being that the games alot more shooter this time around. It could be anything, a crappy story etc. As Zelda TP showed us in 06, ANY game can fail.

Unless something goes horribly wrong I can't see it being anything other than a bigger and better Mass Effect. And that is definitely GOTY for me. Well on 360 anyway, God Of War III and Mario Galaxy 2 on the other consoles.

Vandal, there has been sort of an overload of info on the gameplay for the sequel. All of the character cla$$ess have been revamped and the shooty bangs have been tightened up. There has also been previews of the opening of the game that will explain (and spoil) the mystery of the first teaser (Shephard KIA) video.

They've explained the change to the inventory, how your save games from the first game will be carried over to the sequel and who your party will be. I think that's quite a bit.

Class videos and shooty bangs aren't what I wanted to hear about. That was what I was specifically referring to that when I was speaking about a lack of information. I want to hear more about how they are handling exploration and the side quests. If it is the same, dry planet design then you can kiss my 60 bucks goodbye.

I think any technical issues could result in a below AAA score ---although that would be flop and not a fail

I think that's the only thing I haven't heard that much about yet except for the fact that they've improved it and created a new vehicle, Hammerhead, to explore with. I have no doubt that before the game launches they will put something out about that.

How did you come to the conclusion that Mass Effect 2 is the most over hyped game of 2010? It is not like there is AAA hype for the sequel of a game that scored 6.5 or anything. Come on, man.:?

Ok it can only be better than the first and we've seen that through the gameplay videos, so there's no way it could "fail".

It can't be the most overhyped in a year with Halo Reach and Gran Turismo 5. In order to "fail" it has to be worse than the original- Bioware are aiming to address every criticism of ME 1.

I very seriously doubt it will fail. They have said to have fixed some of the biggest issues with the first one, and if so, then we're sure to have a hit. I'm looking forward to it!

The only thing that, for me at least, really "needed" fixing from the first ME was the combat. Having played a ME2 demo, I'm sure it will be a simply terrific game, since they have improved it quite nicely.

I doubt they would get away with putting as little actual gameplay in the sequel. The first game had barely 4 hours of real gameplay, the rest was made up of long conversation trees and inane randomly generated side quests. They got away with it on the strength of the story and the immersive world they created, but ME2 will need a hell of a lot more content if it is to match the reviews of the first game.

you know. Everyone thought that Mass Effect would be perfect, and though it was an excellent game. It was not perfect, there were plenty of nagging issues with it, many of which went beyond even the technical issues with the game (ie...sidequests)

and now, with Dragon age out, I dont know if many of the more simpler RPG mechanics in Mass Effect are just going to cut it anymore, at least for me. Im replaying Mass Effect right now, and after Dragon Age it just all feels far to basic.

That said, I know next to nothing about Mass Effect 2, I am keeping away from most trailers and such, so for all I know, all my concerns might be adressed.

Hardcore mass effect fans are like raindrops to a puddle here. I really like Mass Effect, and I just know it's going to be awesome for me no matter how it turns out but I highly doubt it will justify the hype to a lot of people. Of course it could fail and even if it did get 10s and high 9s it would still be overrated to the less seasoned light bioware/RPGamers.

I think its in good hands at Bioware. I can't possibly see this failing. They have a solid foundation and storyline from the first game, and I'm thinking the second one will only improve.

The only question to me is will I prefer it to Dragon Age. I'm playing it right now and really loving it!

In light of your sig, TC, you could possibly be accused of complaining right now.

To the topic, no, it's almost impossible for ME2 to "fail". Failure would, to me, have to include zero progress on bugs. We have enough evidence to the contrary that we can mostly eliminate the possibility of bugs to the ME1 level. Not even close.

The only thing keeping ME2 away from instant AAA status is a heavy falter in the story. I doubt it. Even so, it wouldn't get below an 8 in that extreme case.

ME2 is going to be 9+ virtually everywhere. Personally, I couldn't care less if it gets an 8, 9, 10 (in fact, i'd love to see how everybody here responded to an 8). I can't wait to play this game. That's all.

I agree. For a start quests weren't randomly generated though I will agree most of them did little to the credit of the game. Second, the conversations were part of that "content" as the idea was that you were supposed to be playing the role of that charatcter and thus paved the way with his or her personality and viewpoints as well as their talents. Given the conversations as content I found there to be a good 15 to 20 hours of content on my first playthrough.

I'd also like to throw it out there that it is one of the only games I have played on the 360 that gives you actual rewards hand in hand with achievements.

The only thing that has me worried was what little I have seen of the actual stats screen for character skilll choices.. It seems like the tree is even smaller and dulled down then before.. Many would already agree that ME1's character leveling system was pretty weak with a dozen rows of linear path ways.. Hopefully I am wrong.
