In console or handheld market?

Assuming handheld, then yes, since there's only Nintendo and Sony...

In the console market they failed terribly.

But I sure do love my Ipod Touch 32GB 3G.

In the handheld market, yes. Heck, the iPad has sold 2 million already, I think some cool games could release for it that arent iPhone ports.

With the way they over charge for stuff, i think it will fail. Plus i think the 3 that are in right now won't being going anywhere anytime soon and they are enough.

No room for a console. I think all 3 companies would gang up and smear the apple console.

I think the Apple Pippin should remind them not to get into the console market. They are already growing in the handheld market; that's their best bet.

There will be room in the handheld market after they boot Sony out of it.

But in the console market it's a tough fight. Perhaps if one of them was struggling on the point of bankruptcy.

What makes you think Sony will be booted out? Piracy and lackluster software sales aside, the PSP has sold nearly 60 million units. There's clearly going to be another Sony handheld, and I'm willing to bet it will be more successful than PSP.

I hope not. All we need is another piece of overpriced hardware from Apple.

wouldn't an influx of gaming consoles from various companies recreate another scenario like the 80s, in which the video game market crashed almost for good?

They don't even need the Gimmick. They could just say HEY LOOK IT PLAYS GAMES AS WELL AS PLAY YOUR MUSIC ON iTUNES AND EVERYTHING ELSE YOU CAN FIND ON A MAC OR iPAD! and slap the Apple logo on it and call i*insert word here* and then people like this would be at the Apple store buying it.

It can suck but if it has the Apple Logo on it...it's immediately "better".

Poor analogy. Dreamcast was following a line of many (commercially) failed SEGA consoles (SEGA CD, 32X, Game Gear, and Saturn). The system itself didn't sell well, it was under-featured in comparison to its primary competitor (PS2 had built in rumble, DVD playback, superior hardware, better software support, etc), and above all the gaming public simply didn't trust SEGA. On the other hand, look at Sony. PS1 and PS2 are the highest-selling home consoles of all time. PS3 can be considered nothing less than a success. The PSP hardware sold exceedingly well. Sony has a great relationship with many third parties.

If Apple released a gaming console, people would claim until their dying breath that the games aren't comparable to those on other systems.

Far from selling millions and dominating the industry... hardcore gamers generally are/act unimpressed and distrusting of Apple. Apple would do better to stick with technophiles and casual gamers, as they're already doing.

I'm always curious as to why people bring up the Pippin. It's not only ancient history (and not relevant to the current Apple), it was also not Apple alone who made the failed Pippin. Bandai, friends.

I can't even fathom the kind of fanboys an Apple console would produce.

Against the video gaming oligopoly, yes. The more competitors, the better, as I feel that an oligopoly is no better than an monopoly.

Interesting that "free market" and pro-competition gamers want competition in the industry, but do not want Apple to compete and strongly support the oligarchs.

Yeah, there are no worse fanboys on the net than macheads.

So they would propably fit in SW pretty nicely :D

Seriously though, Apple has never been a company that would bleed money for years in hopes of future profits and that's what console market requires. What's more..Apple likes to release new versions of their hardware every year, on console market it wouldn't work. I think they will just keep on expanding iPad and iPhone and that's how they will secure their own permanent place in gaming.

Bandai merely produced the console, much like Goldstar and Panasonic produced the 3DO. Apple designed and published the specifications for the Pippin and The 3DO Company designed and published the specifications for the 3DO. An example of a Bandai console would be the Playdia or Wonderswan. Pippin is a "Bandai" console in the same way that 3DO is a "Goldstar" console.
