In terms of quality control, last gen was just as bad as this gen in my personal experience.
3rd Gen: Game & Watch- Never Broke.NES- Never Broke. TG16- Never Broke
4th Gen: SNES- Never Broke. Genesis X2- 1 broke, 1 didn't. GG- Never Broke
5th Gen: SAT- Never Broke. PS1- Mine never broke, but I know many, many people who's PS1 did. N64- Never Broke,GBC- Never Broke
6th Gen: NGPC- Never Broke.WSC- Never Broke. GC- Never Broke. GBA- Never Broke. DC- Never Broke. PS2- Broke once, cost $125 to fix,X-Box- Broke once, fixed myself
7th Gen: 360- Broke twice, free to fix both times,Wii- Never Broke,DS- Never Broke
In terms of impact I would say this gen is more important than the 4th and 6th gens, but less than the 3rd and 5th.
3rd: Rebirth of industry, birth of many genres and influential IPs, largest leap from one generation to the next in terms of quality (Atari 2600 to NES) imo
4th: Refinement period, high level of quality in terms of average game
5th: Dawn of 3D gaming, birth of many genres and influential IPs, first mass shift of gaming demographics from children to teens
6th: Refinement period, large game libraries
7th: Mass leakage of gaming into popular culture. Production levels rival other forms of entertainment and are increasingly recognized as doing so outside of the industry. Sophisticated questions more commonly asked about how players interact with games and how and if, story and emotion can be imparted through gameplay. Players who play time killers come out of the shadows and use consoles for that purpose. Clash of demographics and experience level with gaming grows more pointed and contentious. Period feels like a combination of refinement and experiment.
