How? modders use a pre-built engine to make things, valve built their own engine to make games, they are as much a modder as bungie or naughty dog.;)

Episode 1....expansion (first person perspective/shooter...basically a mod...but no problem)

Episode 2....expansion (first person perspective/shooter.....another mod...but no problem)

Team Fortress 2 (a FPS mod of Source engine..)

Portal (first person perspective/shooter ....mod of source engine with a cute song at the end)

Left 4 Dead (first person perspective/shooter....Sophiticated mod of Source, but mod nonetheless)

Left 4 Dead 2 (MONEY GRAB mod)

while everyone has their own personal favorite dev, valve should at least be acknowledged as one of the better devs. while you may personally not like their games, they constantly spit out content that is praised by both critics and fans. not only that, but they continue to support their games arguably more than any other dev.

Like I said,

Valve mostly makes glorified, albeit, sophisticated, mods.

Valve is one of the best companies but they have several flaws.

Don't push the tech: Valve (especially lately) has been relying on less than revolutionary tech (game engine).

Wacky release schedule: Their release schedule has gotten almost as bad as Square Enix (with its big games like FF or KH). ep 3 say high

Too reliant on 3rd parties (modders): Valve seems to rely to much on the mod community (to their credit they are good).

Can't tell a character's back-story even to save their own life: I know it is a game preference, but still...

Crazed fan base: Valve fans will try to destroy all those that don't give in to the all powerful Valve.

They're alright, I love Half Life, but L4D is god awfull..

Valve is great, but i wouldn't say the best. CounterStrike is probably one of the most epic games ever, as seen how it has survived the times. The same can be said of Team Fortress games. But at the same time they don't push the envelope at all. Plus Left 4 Dead 2 left a terrible taste in my mouth. Speaking of which (off topic), did anyone notice that BioShock 2 blatantly ripped of the Tank from L4D and named it the Brute Splicer? The thing even rips up concrete and chucks it? WTF?!?!

One of the best ever.. top 3 forsure.

By your logic any company that makes games with a licensed engine are just "modders". I suppose every game must have a new engine made for it, right? I mean at least Valve have their own engine, one which still looks pretty good years later...

One of the best but not the best only games I enjoy from them are CS,DoD, GMod and I hate L4D 1 and 2

Well Source is a first party engine... So that means any developer that doesn't have a new engine for each game aren't proper developers. :P

They are one of the best, but lately they have kinda been going downhill. Valve has sold its soul for money finally I guess.. lol But still great company, just wish they would give a dam about HL again. Their most famous and well selling ip and they just dont seem to care about it anymore.

the only valve game i rate as "great" is half life 2. granted half life 1 is too outdated and i have never played much of it. so maybe in its day half life 1 was great as well. all their other games(tf2, portal, l4d etc.) i rate as only decent to good.

What to you is the difference between a mod and a full game? There is no way you could design the maps of the quality of TF2 and L4D as a non professional modder. You disregard their abilities for script writing as well.

To call them money grabbing is just silly. This company went to a lot of effort to organise Steam and you also dont give them credit for the Orange Box package.

How many Valve games have you actually played? Im being serious. If the company is that bad why would you buy their games then? You have bought them all havent you?

Valve is one of the best in my opinion. While I do love Valve and their great games, I think Bioware deserves the title of THE best.

Although I don't think that they are the best, I do think that they are one of the best.

One of the best, but I wish they'd branch out a bit more.

They're "good" in that they've never made a game that was "bad". I wouldn't classify them as a top developer though, and I think that the reason most people do has more to do with how well they support the pc and less with how mind blowing their games are.
