As a gamer for a long time since 2006 and I'm in my early 40's I say it definately releives stress 100%. But can be addicting as hell .

My kid is growing up and watching me play games after work and she's becoming curious about this hobby, will Video gaming be good for her in moderation?

Please advise.

Everything is fine in moderation.

How is spending 8 hours a day on social media/smart phones/influencers socially accepted yet spending one hour of gaming back in the 90s wasn't socially accepted. Goes to show what society knows.

Playing videogames helps me switch off from the world for those 2-3 hours a night I'm in a different world. The cons is when you spend unhealthy amount of time playing videogames.

Pros: its fun

Cons: Its not that good for you, no.

Should take up gymnastics or dancing as a hobby.

Better to take out aggression and competitiveness on a game than in person. Gaming is a good way to vent, unwind, relax, and chill. I say it's a good thing.

You're over 40, you should know.

But yes, videogames are good because they're fun for all ages. You like games, and having that in common with your daughter would be fun for both of you, no?

Yes some video games can even be a bit educational and give you exposure to other cultures and history. I find the video game medium for telling stories the most interesting nowadays.

It ought to be good in moderation but it can be addicting as hell and you're not being physically active especially while engaging in those wee hours when you're suppose to be in bed...

Doing some research on the game you're looking up could help aid in the decision whether or not it's right for you

This is coming from someone who has burned out on the hobby atleast 3 or 4 times during their life time engaged in though... imagine not getting a rise while playing Gta: vice city that was practically my go to comfort game...

Gaming, TV, internet are the lowest rung on the human experience board. They offer escapism which is a really wonderful thing every now and then but my great regret is that I spent my 20s and early 30s focusing on gaming and not the small window of time in life where my body is strong and capable of anything. I find myself now in my 40s having my games with my morning coffee or while the family is enjoying an evening of survivor or something. I seek out earthly adventures in most of my spare time. I am grateful my kids have only select things they enjoy about the hobby. They're not as invested as I was at their age. My eldest plays only Zelda and Miyazaki games and my youngest only likes MLB the show.

It may sound like I'm talking Ill of gaming but I assure you I am not. I am a first generation gamer and I'm wise enough after 40 years of gaming to recognize where I went a little off the tracks in terms of selecting the best possible activities for my time and can see how it commandeered my motivations for living. My sons are generation 2 gamers and I want them to see that gaming is wildly cool, super innovative and creative.... But I also want them to prioritize the vastly more interesting real life they've been given above all else.

It taught me that woman are objects and should adopt an incel mentality.

And that everyone from Resetera is an asshole.

Idon't think gaming is that good or bad in a vacuum, it's that it takes time from other activities that are more developing. If I had a kid I'd def try to limit gaming time. But I don't think it's dangerous in moderation. Not a revolutionary answer I guess lol.

Edit: the mods were quick I see :)

Gaming has been a hobby of mine for a really long time. Since my father got me an NES when I was a kid, I would prefer to play Super Mario Bros, instead of going out to play football with my friends.

I don't see a reason why a hobby would have cons, it's just a way of entertaining yourself.

@kazumakiryu21:

Pros: Escapism and a great way to unwind without resorting to hardcore drugs.

Cons: A lot of games can get addictive and may consume TOO MUCH time of your day.

So moderation is key, as others have stated. But it's easier said than done.

Video games are like any other entertainment medium... no different to watching a movie, reading a book or listening to music. For me, it's something I get enjoyment out of. It's fun. But yes, in moderation of course.

Video games are fine in moderation. Just don't get addicted, and try to prevent your kids from getting addicted too. Try to limit the weekly play time, both for yourself and your kid. The same goes for social media, movies and TV.

I like gaming, and I am a similar age to you. It can be addicting (some games are designed to be addicting). I find it a great secondaryhobby - you should always have one that supersedes gaming IMO. For me, gaming comes second behind motorcycling. If I didn't ride anymore, I'd make BBQing a higher priority over gaming.

Your number 1 hobby should not involve sitting on your rump in front of a TV.

It is fine in moderation. YOu can only study so long before retention issues kick in, you can only exercise so long before fatigue kicks in.

Video games, especially more simulationy ones can be educational. Playing simulationist video games helped shape how I view the world in more ways than one.

@kazumakiryu21: it's healthier and less addictive than alot of things out there. Compare to social media, those depraved bastards at tiktok, Facebook, Instagram, etc etc that all prey on kids with targeted AI algorithms. Trust me, those apps are as bad as gambling is, so you should be careful about that. Gaming is much less addictive and forces you to use your brain. Some people get more addicted to it than others. You just need to identify those lootbox type gamed, any game that has micro transactions in them, shoppable items and so on, and try to avoid them.
